מתיו 14
| בעת ההיא שמע הורדוס שר רבע המדינה את שמע ישוע׃ | 1 |
At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Yeshua,
| ויאמר אל נעריו זה הוא יוחנן המטביל והוא קם מן המתים על כן הגבורות פעלות בו׃ | 2 |
and said to his servants, “This is Yochanan the Immerser. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him.”
| כי הורדוס תפש את יוחנן ויאסרהו וישימהו בבית הסהר בגלל הורודיה אשת פילפוס אחיו׃ | 3 |
For Herod had arrested Yochanan, bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.
| כי יוחנן אמר אליו לא נכון היתה לך לאשה׃ | 4 |
For Yochanan said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
| ויבקש המיתו אך ירא את ההמון כי לנביא חשבו אתו׃ | 5 |
When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
| ויהי ביום הלדת הורדוס ותרקד בת הורודיה בתוכם ותיטב בעיני הורדוס׃ | 6 |
But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced amongst them and pleased Herod.
| וישבע לה ויאמר מה תשאל נפשך ואתן לך׃ | 7 |
Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask.
| ואמה שמה את הדברים בפיה ותשאל לאמר תנה לי פה בקערה את ראש יוחנן המטביל׃ | 8 |
She, being prompted by her mother, said, “Give me here on a platter the head of Yochanan the Immerser.”
| ויעצב המלך אך בעבור השבועה והמסבים עמו צוה לתת לה׃ | 9 |
The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given,
| וישלח וישא את ראש יוחנן מעליו בבית הסהר׃ | 10 |
and he sent and beheaded Yochanan in the prison.
| ויביאו את ראשו בקערה ויתנו לנערה ותביאהו אל אמה׃ | 11 |
His head was brought on a platter and given to the young lady; and she brought it to her mother.
| ויגשו תלמידיו וישאו את גויתו ויקברוה וילכו ויגידו לישוע׃ | 12 |
His disciples came, took the body, and buried it. Then they went and told Yeshua.
| ויהי כשמעו את זאת ויסר משם באניה אל מקום חרבה לבדד וישמעו המון העם וילכו אחריו ברגליהם מן הערים׃ | 13 |
Now when Yeshua heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place apart. When the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities.
| ויצא ישוע וירא המון עם רב ויהמו מעיו עליהם וירפא את החלשים אשר בהם׃ | 14 |
Yeshua went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them and healed their sick.
| ויהי לפנות ערב ויגשו אליו תלמידיו ויאמרו המקום חרב וגם נטה היום שלחה את המון העם וילכו אל הכפרים לקנות להם אכל׃ | 15 |
When evening had come, his disciples came to him, saying, “This place is deserted, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food.”
| ויאמר אליהם אינם צריכים ללכת תנו אתם להם לאכל׃ | 16 |
But Yeshua said to them, “They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
| ויאמרו אליו אין לנו פה כי אם חמשת ככרות לחם ושני דגים׃ | 17 |
They told him, “We only have here five loaves and two fish.”
| ויאמר הביאום אלי הלם׃ | 18 |
He said, “Bring them here to me.”
| ויצו את העם לשבת על הדשא ויקח את חמשת ככרות הלחם ואת שני הדגים וישא עיניו השמימה ויברך ויפרס ויתן את הלחם לתלמידים והתלמידים נתנו לעם׃ | 19 |
He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.
| ויאכלו כלם וישבעו וישאו מן הפתותים הנותרים שנים עשר סלים מלאים׃ | 20 |
They all ate and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces.
| והאכלים היו כחמשת אלפי איש מלבד הנשים והטף׃ | 21 |
Those who ate were about five thousand men, in addition to women and children.
| ויאץ ישוע בתלמידיו לרדת באניה לעבר לפניה אל עבר הים עד אשר ישלח את העם׃ | 22 |
Immediately Yeshua made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
| ואחרי שלחו את העם עלה ההרה בדד להתפלל ויהי ערב והוא לבדו שמה׃ | 23 |
After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.
| והאניה הלכה בתוך הים ותטרף מן הגלים כי הרוח לנגדה׃ | 24 |
But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
| ויהי באשמרת הרביעית ויבא אליהם ישוע מתהלך על פני הים׃ | 25 |
In the fourth watch of the night, Yeshua came to them, walking on the sea.
| והתלמידים בראתם אותו מתהלך על פני הים נבהלו לאמר מראה רוח הוא ויצעקו מפחד׃ | 26 |
When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It’s a ghost!” and they cried out for fear.
| וידבר ישוע פתאם אליהם חזקו כי אני הוא אל תיראו׃ | 27 |
But immediately Yeshua spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.”
| ויען פטרוס ויאמר אליו אם אתה הוא אדני צוה נא כי אבא אליך על המים׃ | 28 |
Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.”
| ויאמר בוא וירד פטרוס מן האניה ויתהלך על המים לבוא אל ישוע׃ | 29 |
He said, “Come!” Peter stepped down from the boat and walked on the waters to come to Yeshua.
| ויהי כראתו את הרוח כי חזקה היא ויירא ויחל לטבע ויצעק לאמר אדני הושיעני׃ | 30 |
But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
| וימהר ישוע לשלח את ידו ויחזק בו ויאמר אליו קטן האמונה למה לחק לבך׃ | 31 |
Immediately Yeshua stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
| הם עלו אל האניה והרוח שככה׃ | 32 |
When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.
| ואנשי האניה נגשו וישתחוו לו לאמר באמת בן אלהים אתה׃ | 33 |
Those who were in the boat came and worshipped him, saying, “You are truly the Son of God!”
| ויעברו את הים ויבאו ארצה גניסר׃ | 34 |
When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.
| ויכירו אתו אנשי המקום ההוא וישלחו אל כל סביבותיהם ויביאו אליו את כל החולים׃ | 35 |
When the people of that place recognised him, they sent into all that surrounding region and brought to him all who were sick;
| ויבקשו ממנו כי יגעו רק בציצת בגדו וכל הנגעים נושעו׃ | 36 |
and they begged him that they might just touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.
