שמואל א 1

1 ויהי איש אחד מן הרמתים צופים מהר אפרים ושמו אלקנה בן ירחם בן אליהוא בן תחו בן צוף אפרתי׃

And he was a man one from Ramathaim Zophim from [the] hill country of Ephraim and name his [was] Elkanah [the] son of Jeroham [the] son of Elihu [the] son of Tohu [the] son of Zuph an Ephrathite.

2 ולו שתי נשים שם אחת חנה ושם השנית פננה ויהי לפננה ילדים ולחנה אין ילדים׃

And [belonged] to him two wives [the] name of one [was] Hannah and [the] name of the second [was] Peninnah and it belonged to Peninnah children and [belonged] to Hannah not children.

3 ועלה האיש ההוא מעירו מימים ימימה להשתחות ולזבח ליהוה צבאות בשלה ושם שני בני עלי חפני ופנחס כהנים ליהוה׃

And he went up the man that from city his from days - days towards to bow down and to sacrifice to Yahweh of hosts at Shiloh and there [the] two [the] sons of Eli Hophni and Phinehas [were] priests of Yahweh.

4 ויהי היום ויזבח אלקנה ונתן לפננה אשתו ולכל בניה ובנותיה מנות׃

And it was the day and he sacrificed Elkanah and he gave to Peninnah wife his and to all sons her and daughters her portions.

5 ולחנה יתן מנה אחת אפים כי את חנה אהב ויהוה סגר רחמה׃

And to Hannah he gave a portion one double for Hannah he loved and Yahweh he had closed womb her.

6 וכעסתה צרתה גם כעס בעבור הרעמה כי סגר יהוה בעד רחמה׃

And she provoked her rival her also provocation in order to disconcert her for he had closed Yahweh behind womb her.

7 וכן יעשה שנה בשנה מדי עלתה בבית יהוה כן תכעסנה ותבכה ולא תאכל׃

And thus he did a year in a year as often as went up she in [the] house of Yahweh thus she provoked her and she wept and not she ate.

8 ויאמר לה אלקנה אישה חנה למה תבכי ולמה לא תאכלי ולמה ירע לבבך הלוא אנכי טוב לך מעשרה בנים׃

And he said to her Elkanah husband her O Hannah why? do you weep and why? not are you eating and why? is sad heart your ¿ not [am] I good to you more than ten sons.

9 ותקם חנה אחרי אכלה בשלה ואחרי שתה ועלי הכהן ישב על הכסא על מזוזת היכל יהוה׃

And she arose Hannah after had eaten in Shiloh and after had drunk and Eli the priest [was] sitting on the seat at [the] doorpost of [the] temple of Yahweh.

10 והיא מרת נפש ותתפלל על יהוה ובכה תבכה׃

And she [was] bitter of soul and she prayed to Yahweh and utterly she wept.

11 ותדר נדר ותאמר יהוה צבאות אם ראה תראה בעני אמתך וזכרתני ולא תשכח את אמתך ונתתה לאמתך זרע אנשים ונתתיו ליהוה כל ימי חייו ומורה לא יעלה על ראשו׃

And she vowed a vow and she said O Yahweh of hosts certainly [if] you will look - on [the] affliction of maidservant your and you will remember me and not you will forget maidservant your and you will give to maidservant of your spring of men and I will give him to Yahweh all [the] days of life his and a razor not it will go up on head his.

12 והיה כי הרבתה להתפלל לפני יהוה ועלי שמר את פיה׃

And it was that she had increased to pray before Yahweh and Eli [was] watching mouth her.

13 וחנה היא מדברת על לבה רק שפתיה נעות וקולה לא ישמע ויחשבה עלי לשכרה׃

And Hannah she [was] speaking to heart her only lips her [were] quivering and voice her not it was heard and he considered her Eli to a drunken [woman].

14 ויאמר אליה עלי עד מתי תשתכרין הסירי את יינך מעליך׃

And he said to her Eli until when? will you be drunk! remove wine your from with you.

15 ותען חנה ותאמר לא אדני אשה קשת רוח אנכי ויין ושכר לא שתיתי ואשפך את נפשי לפני יהוה׃

And she answered Hannah and she said no O lord my [am] a woman hard of spirit I and wine and strong drink not I have drunk and I have poured out soul my before Yahweh.

16 אל תתן את אמתך לפני בת בליעל כי מרב שיחי וכעסי דברתי עד הנה׃

May not you give maidservant your before a daughter of worthlessness for from [the] greatness of complaint my and provocation my I have spoken until now.

17 ויען עלי ויאמר לכי לשלום ואלהי ישראל יתן את שלתך אשר שאלת מעמו׃

And he answered Eli and he said go to peace and [the] God of Israel may he grant petition your which you have asked from with him.

18 ותאמר תמצא שפחתך חן בעיניך ותלך האשה לדרכה ותאכל ופניה לא היו לה עוד׃

And she said may she find maidservant your favor in eyes your and she went the woman to way her and she ate and face her not they were to her still.

19 וישכמו בבקר וישתחוו לפני יהוה וישבו ויבאו אל ביתם הרמתה וידע אלקנה את חנה אשתו ויזכרה יהוה׃

And they rose early in the morning and they bowed down before Yahweh and they returned and they went to house their Ramah towards and he knew Elkanah Hannah wife his and he remembered her Yahweh.

20 ויהי לתקפות הימים ותהר חנה ותלד בן ותקרא את שמו שמואל כי מיהוה שאלתיו׃

And it was to [the] circuit of the days and she conceived Hannah and she bore a son and she called name his Samuel for from Yahweh I asked for him.

21 ויעל האיש אלקנה וכל ביתו לזבח ליהוה את זבח הימים ואת נדרו׃

And he went up the man Elkanah and all household his to sacrifice to Yahweh [the] sacrifice of the days and vow his.

22 וחנה לא עלתה כי אמרה לאישה עד יגמל הנער והבאתיו ונראה את פני יהוה וישב שם עד עולם׃

And Hannah not she went up for she said to husband her until he will be weaned the lad and I will take him and he will appear with [the] presence of Yahweh and he will dwell there until perpetuity.

23 ויאמר לה אלקנה אישה עשי הטוב בעיניך שבי עד גמלך אתו אך יקם יהוה את דברו ותשב האשה ותינק את בנה עד גמלה אתו׃

And he said to her Elkanah husband her do the good in eyes your remain until wean you him only may he carry out Yahweh word his and she remained the woman and she nursed son her until had weaned she him.

24 ותעלהו עמה כאשר גמלתו בפרים שלשה ואיפה אחת קמח ונבל יין ותבאהו בית יהוה שלו והנער נער׃

And she brought up him with her just when she had weaned him with young bulls three and an ephah one of flour and a skin of wine and she took him [the] house of Yahweh Shiloh and the lad [was] a lad.

25 וישחטו את הפר ויביאו את הנער אל עלי׃

And they slaughtered the young bull and they brought the lad to Eli.

26 ותאמר בי אדני חי נפשך אדני אני האשה הנצבת עמכה בזה להתפלל אל יהוה׃

And she said pardon me O lord my [by] [the] life of self your O lord my I [am] the woman who stood with you in this [place] to pray to Yahweh.

27 אל הנער הזה התפללתי ויתן יהוה לי את שאלתי אשר שאלתי מעמו׃

Concerning the lad this I prayed and he has granted Yahweh to me petition my which I asked from with him.

28 וגם אנכי השאלתהו ליהוה כל הימים אשר היה הוא שאול ליהוה וישתחו שם ליהוה׃

And also I I entrust him to Yahweh all the days which he has been he [is] asked by Yahweh and he bowed down there to Yahweh.
