1 ונפן ונעל דרך הבשן ויצא עוג מלך הבשן לקראתנו הוא וכל עמו למלחמה--אדרעי

Then we turned and went up the way to Bashan. Og, the king of Bashan, came and attacked us, he and all his people, to fight at Edrei.

2 ויאמר יהוה אלי אל תירא אתו--כי בידך נתתי אתו ואת כל עמו ואת ארצו ועשית לו--כאשר עשית לסיחן מלך האמרי אשר יושב בחשבון

Yahweh said to me, 'Do not fear him; for I have given you victory over him and have put all his people and his land under your control. You will do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.'

3 ויתן יהוה אלהינו בידנו גם את עוג מלך הבשן--ואת כל עמו ונכהו עד בלתי השאיר לו שריד

So Yahweh our God also gave us victory over Og the king of Bashan, and all his people were put under our control. We struck them down until not one of his people remained.

4 ונלכד את כל עריו בעת ההוא--לא היתה קריה אשר לא לקחנו מאתם ששים עיר כל חבל ארגב ממלכת עוג בבשן

We took all his cities at that time. There was not one of the sixty cities that we did not take from them—all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

5 כל אלה ערים בצרת חומה גבהה--דלתים ובריח לבד מערי הפרזי הרבה מאד

These were all cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars; this was besides very many unwalled villages.

6 ונחרם אותם--כאשר עשינו לסיחן מלך חשבון החרם כל עיר מתם הנשים והטף

We completely destroyed them, as we did to Sihon king of Heshbon, completely destroying every city—men and the women and the little ones.

7 וכל הבהמה ושלל הערים בזונו לנו

But all the cattle and the spoil of the cities, we took as spoils for ourselves.

8 ונקח בעת ההוא את הארץ מיד שני מלכי האמרי אשר בעבר הירדן--מנחל ארנן עד הר חרמון

At that time we took the land out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, from the Valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon

9 צידנים יקראו לחרמון שרין והאמרי יקראו לו שניר

(Mount Hermon the Sidonians call Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir)

10 כל ערי המישר וכל הגלעד וכל הבשן עד סלכה ואדרעי--ערי ממלכת עוג בבשן

and all the cities of the plain, all Gilead, and all Bashan, all the way to Salekah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.”

11 כי רק עוג מלך הבשן נשאר מיתר הרפאים--הנה ערשו ערש ברזל הלה הוא ברבת בני עמון תשע אמות ארכה וארבע אמות רחבה--באמת איש

(For of the remnant of the Rephaim, only Og king of Bashan had remained. Look! His bed was a bed of iron. Was it not in Rabbah, where the descendants of Ammon live? It was nine cubits long and four cubits wide, the way people measure.)

12 ואת הארץ הזאת ירשנו בעת ההוא מערער אשר על נחל ארנן וחצי הר הגלעד ועריו--נתתי לראובני ולגדי

“This land that we took in possession at that time—from Aroer, that is by the Valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead, and its cities—I gave to the Reubenites and to the Gadites.

13 ויתר הגלעד וכל הבשן ממלכת עוג--נתתי לחצי שבט המנשה כל חבל הארגב לכל הבשן ההוא יקרא ארץ רפאים

The rest of Gilead and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half tribe of Manasseh. (All the region of Argob, and all Bashan. The same territory is called the land of Rephaim.

14 יאיר בן מנשה לקח את כל חבל ארגב עד גבול הגשורי והמעכתי ויקרא אתם על שמו את הבשן חות יאיר עד היום הזה

Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, took all the region of Argob to the border of the Geshurites and the Maakathites. He called the region, even Bashan, by his own name, Havvoth Jair, to this day.)

15 ולמכיר נתתי את הגלעד

I gave Gilead to Machir.

16 ולראובני ולגדי נתתי מן הגלעד ועד נחל ארנן תוך הנחל וגבל--ועד יבק הנחל גבול בני עמון

To the Reubenites and to the Gadites I gave territory from Gilead to the Valley of the Arnon—the middle of the valley is the territory's border—and to the Jabbok River, which is the border with the descendants of Ammon.

17 והערבה והירדן וגבל--מכנרת ועד ים הערבה ים המלח תחת אשדת הפסגה מזרחה

Another of its borders is also the plain of the Jordan River valley, from Kinnereth to the Sea of the Arabah (that is, the Salt Sea) to the slopes of Mount Pisgah eastward.

18 ואצו אתכם בעת ההוא לאמר יהוה אלהיכם נתן לכם את הארץ הזאת לרשתה--חלוצים תעברו לפני אחיכם בני ישראל כל בני חיל

I commanded you at that time, saying, 'Yahweh your God has given you this land to possess it; you, all the men of war, will pass over armed before your brothers, the people of Israel.

19 רק נשיכם וטפכם ומקנכם ידעתי כי מקנה רב לכם--ישבו בעריכם אשר נתתי לכם

But your wives, your little ones, and your cattle (I know that you have much cattle), will stay in your cities that I have given you,

20 עד אשר יניח יהוה לאחיכם ככם וירשו גם הם את הארץ אשר יהוה אלהיכם נתן להם בעבר הירדן ושבתם איש לירשתו אשר נתתי לכם

until Yahweh gives rest to your brothers, as he has to you, until they also possess the land that Yahweh your God is giving them beyond the Jordan; then will you return, every man of you, to your own property that I have given you.'

21 ואת יהושוע צויתי בעת ההוא לאמר עיניך הראת את כל אשר עשה יהוה אלהיכם לשני המלכים האלה--כן יעשה יהוה לכל הממלכות אשר אתה עבר שמה

I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, 'Your eyes have seen all that Yahweh your God has done to these two kings; Yahweh will do the same to all the kingdoms where you go over.

22 לא תיראום כי יהוה אלהיכם הוא הנלחם לכם

You will not fear them, for Yahweh your God is the one who will fight for you.'

23 ואתחנן אל יהוה בעת ההוא לאמר

I implored Yahweh at that time, saying,

24 אדני יהוה אתה החלות להראות את עבדך את גדלך ואת ידך החזקה--אשר מי אל בשמים ובארץ אשר יעשה כמעשיך וכגבורתך

'O Lord Yahweh, you have begun to show your servant your greatness and your strong hand; for what god is there in heaven or in earth that can do the same works as you have done, and the same mighty acts?

25 אעברה נא ואראה את הארץ הטובה אשר בעבר הירדן ההר הטוב הזה והלבנן

Let me go over, I beg you, and see the good land that is beyond the Jordan, that good hill country, and also Lebanon.'

26 ויתעבר יהוה בי למענכם ולא שמע אלי ויאמר יהוה אלי רב לך--אל תוסף דבר אלי עוד בדבר הזה

But Yahweh was angry with me because of you; he did not listen to me. Yahweh said to me, 'Let this be enough for you—speak no more to me about this matter:

27 עלה ראש הפסגה ושא עיניך ימה וצפנה ותימנה ומזרחה--וראה בעיניך כי לא תעבר את הירדן הזה

go up to the top of Pisgah and lift up your eyes westward, northward, southward, and eastward; look with your eyes, for you will not go over the Jordan.

28 וצו את יהושע וחזקהו ואמצהו כי הוא יעבר לפני העם הזה והוא ינחיל אותם את הארץ אשר תראה

Instead, instruct Joshua and encourage and strengthen him, for he will go over before this people, and he will cause them to inherit the land that you will see.'

29 ונשב בגיא מול בית פעור

So we stayed in the valley opposite Beth Peor.
