Ἀριθμοί 17
1 καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων
Adonai spoke to Moses [Drawn out], saying,
2 λάλησον τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ καὶ λαβὲ παρ’ αὐτῶν ῥάβδον ῥάβδον κατ’ οἴκους πατριῶν παρὰ πάντων τῶν ἀρχόντων αὐτῶν κατ’ οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν δώδεκα ῥάβδους καὶ ἑκάστου τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἐπίγραψον ἐπὶ τῆς ῥάβδου αὐτοῦ
“Speak to the children of Israel [God prevails], and take rods from them, one for each fathers’ house, of all their princes according to their fathers’ houses, twelve rods. Write each man’s name on his rod.
3 καὶ τὸ ὄνομα Ααρων ἐπίγραψον ἐπὶ τῆς ῥάβδου Λευι ἔστιν γὰρ ῥάβδος μία κατὰ φυλὴν οἴκου πατριῶν αὐτῶν δώσουσιν
You shall write Aaron [Light-bringer]’s name on the rod of Levi [United with]; for there shall be one rod for each head of their fathers’ houses.
4 καὶ θήσεις αὐτὰς ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ τοῦ μαρτυρίου κατέναντι τοῦ μαρτυρίου ἐν οἷς γνωσθήσομαί σοι ἐκεῖ
You shall lay them up in the Tent of Meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you.
5 καὶ ἔσται ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὃν ἐὰν ἐκλέξωμαι αὐτόν ἡ ῥάβδος αὐτοῦ ἐκβλαστήσει καὶ περιελῶ ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ τὸν γογγυσμὸν τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ ἃ αὐτοὶ γογγύζουσιν ἐφ’ ὑμῖν
It shall happen, that the rod of the man whom I shall choose shall bud. I will make the murmurings of the children of Israel [God prevails], which they murmur against you, cease from me.”
6 καὶ ἐλάλησεν Μωυσῆς τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ καὶ ἔδωκαν αὐτῷ πάντες οἱ ἄρχοντες αὐτῶν ῥάβδον τῷ ἄρχοντι τῷ ἑνὶ ῥάβδον κατὰ ἄρχοντα κατ’ οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν δώδεκα ῥάβδους καὶ ἡ ῥάβδος Ααρων ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ῥάβδων αὐτῶν
Moses [Drawn out] spoke to the children of Israel [God prevails]; and all their princes gave him rods, for each prince one, according to their fathers’ houses, even twelve rods. Aaron [Light-bringer]’s rod was among their rods.
7 καὶ ἀπέθηκεν Μωυσῆς τὰς ῥάβδους ἔναντι κυρίου ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ τοῦ μαρτυρίου
Moses [Drawn out] laid up the rods before Adonai in the Tent of the Testimony.
8 καὶ ἐγένετο τῇ ἐπαύριον καὶ εἰσῆλθεν Μωυσῆς καὶ Ααρων εἰς τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ μαρτυρίου καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐβλάστησεν ἡ ῥάβδος Ααρων εἰς οἶκον Λευι καὶ ἐξήνεγκεν βλαστὸν καὶ ἐξήνθησεν ἄνθη καὶ ἐβλάστησεν κάρυα
On the next day, Moses [Drawn out] went into the Tent of the Testimony; and behold, Aaron [Light-bringer]’s rod for the house of Levi [United with] had sprouted, budded, produced blossoms, and bore ripe almonds.
9 καὶ ἐξήνεγκεν Μωυσῆς πάσας τὰς ῥάβδους ἀπὸ προσώπου κυρίου πρὸς πάντας υἱοὺς Ισραηλ καὶ εἶδον καὶ ἔλαβον ἕκαστος τὴν ῥάβδον αὐτοῦ
Moses [Drawn out] brought out all the rods from before Adonai to all the children of Israel [God prevails]. They looked, and each man took his rod.
10 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν ἀπόθες τὴν ῥάβδον Ααρων ἐνώπιον τῶν μαρτυρίων εἰς διατήρησιν σημεῖον τοῖς υἱοῖς τῶν ἀνηκόων καὶ παυσάσθω ὁ γογγυσμὸς αὐτῶν ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνωσιν
Adonai said to Moses [Drawn out], “Put back the rod of Aaron [Light-bringer] before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the children of rebellion; that you may make an end of their murmurings against me, that they not die.”
11 καὶ ἐποίησεν Μωυσῆς καὶ Ααρων καθὰ συνέταξεν κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ οὕτως ἐποίησαν
Moses [Drawn out] did so. As Adonai enjoined him, so he did.
12 καὶ εἶπαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγοντες ἰδοὺ ἐξανηλώμεθα ἀπολώλαμεν παρανηλώμεθα
The children of Israel [God prevails] spoke to Moses [Drawn out], saying, “Behold, we perish! We are undone! We are all undone!
13 πᾶς ὁ ἁπτόμενος τῆς σκηνῆς κυρίου ἀποθνῄσκει ἕως εἰς τέλος ἀποθάνωμεν
Everyone who keeps approaching Adonai’s tabernacle, dies! Will we all perish?”
