Ἔσδρας Αʹ 10

1 καὶ ὡς προσηύξατο Εσδρας καὶ ὡς ἐξηγόρευσεν κλαίων καὶ προσευχόμενος ἐνώπιον οἴκου τοῦ θεοῦ συνήχθησαν πρὸς αὐτὸν ἀπὸ Ισραηλ ἐκκλησία πολλὴ σφόδρα ἄνδρες καὶ γυναῖκες καὶ νεανίσκοι ὅτι ἔκλαυσεν ὁ λαὸς καὶ ὕψωσεν κλαίων

As Ezra prayed and confessed, he wept and threw himself down before God's house. A very great assembly of Israelite men, women, and children gathered to him, for the people were weeping very greatly.

2 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Σεχενιας υἱὸς Ιιηλ ἀπὸ υἱῶν Ηλαμ καὶ εἶπεν τῷ Εσδρα ἡμεῖς ἠσυνθετήσαμεν τῷ θεῷ ἡμῶν καὶ ἐκαθίσαμεν γυναῖκας ἀλλοτρίας ἀπὸ λαῶν τῆς γῆς καὶ νῦν ἔστιν ὑπομονὴ τῷ Ισραηλ ἐπὶ τούτῳ

Shekaniah son of Jehiel of the descendants of Elam said to Ezra, “We have been unfaithful to our God and have married foreign women from the people of the other lands. But in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel.

3 καὶ νῦν διαθώμεθα διαθήκην τῷ θεῷ ἡμῶν ἐκβαλεῖν πάσας τὰς γυναῖκας καὶ τὰ γενόμενα ἐξ αὐτῶν ὡς ἂν βούλῃ ἀνάστηθι καὶ φοβέρισον αὐτοὺς ἐν ἐντολαῖς θεοῦ ἡμῶν καὶ ὡς ὁ νόμος γενηθήτω

So now let us make a covenant with our God to send out all the women and their children according to the Lord's instructions and the instructions of those who tremble at the commandments of our God, and let it be done according to the law.

4 ἀνάστα ὅτι ἐπὶ σὲ τὸ ῥῆμα καὶ ἡμεῖς μετὰ σοῦ κραταιοῦ καὶ ποίησον

Arise, for this thing is for you to carry out, and we are with you. Be strong and do this.”

5 καὶ ἀνέστη Εσδρας καὶ ὥρκισεν τοὺς ἄρχοντας τοὺς ἱερεῖς καὶ Λευίτας καὶ πάντα Ισραηλ τοῦ ποιῆσαι κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο καὶ ὤμοσαν

So Ezra rose and made the priestly officials, the Levites, and all of Israel promise to act in this way. So they all took a solemn oath.

6 καὶ ἀνέστη Εσδρας ἀπὸ προσώπου οἴκου τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ἐπορεύθη εἰς γαζοφυλάκιον Ιωαναν υἱοῦ Ελισουβ καὶ ἐπορεύθη ἐκεῖ ἄρτον οὐκ ἔφαγεν καὶ ὕδωρ οὐκ ἔπιεν ὅτι ἐπένθει ἐπὶ τῇ ἀσυνθεσίᾳ τῆς ἀποικίας

Then Ezra rose from before God's house and went to the rooms of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. He did not eat any bread or drink any water, since he was mourning concerning the faithlessness of those who had been in captivity.

7 καὶ παρήνεγκαν φωνὴν ἐν Ιουδα καὶ ἐν Ιερουσαλημ πᾶσιν τοῖς υἱοῖς τῆς ἀποικίας τοῦ συναθροισθῆναι εἰς Ιερουσαλημ

So they sent word in Judah and Jerusalem to all the people back from exile to assemble in Jerusalem.

8 καὶ πᾶς ὃς ἂν μὴ ἔλθῃ εἰς τρεῖς ἡμέρας ὡς ἡ βουλὴ τῶν ἀρχόντων καὶ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων ἀναθεματισθήσεται πᾶσα ἡ ὕπαρξις αὐτοῦ καὶ αὐτὸς διασταλήσεται ἀπὸ ἐκκλησίας τῆς ἀποικίας

Anyone who did not come in three days according to the instructions from the officials and elders forfeited all of his possessions and would be excluded from the great assembly of the people who had come back from exile.

9 καὶ συνήχθησαν πάντες ἄνδρες Ιουδα καὶ Βενιαμιν εἰς Ιερουσαλημ εἰς τὰς τρεῖς ἡμέρας οὗτος ὁ μὴν ὁ ἔνατος ἐν εἰκάδι τοῦ μηνὸς ἐκάθισεν πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ἐν πλατείᾳ οἴκου τοῦ θεοῦ ἀπὸ θορύβου αὐτῶν περὶ τοῦ ῥήματος καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ χειμῶνος

So all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled in Jerusalem in three days. It was the ninth month and the twentieth day of the month. All the people stood in the square before God's house and trembled because of the word and the rain.

10 καὶ ἀνέστη Εσδρας ὁ ἱερεὺς καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς ὑμεῖς ἠσυνθετήκατε καὶ ἐκαθίσατε γυναῖκας ἀλλοτρίας τοῦ προσθεῖναι ἐπὶ πλημμέλειαν Ισραηλ

Ezra the priest arose and said, “You yourselves have committed treason. You lived with foreign women so as to increase Israel's guilt.

11 καὶ νῦν δότε αἴνεσιν κυρίῳ τῷ θεῷ τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν καὶ ποιήσατε τὸ ἀρεστὸν ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ καὶ διαστάλητε ἀπὸ λαῶν τῆς γῆς καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν γυναικῶν τῶν ἀλλοτρίων

But now give praise to Yahweh, your ancestors' God, and do his will. Separate from the people of the land and from the foreign women.”

12 καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν πᾶσα ἡ ἐκκλησία καὶ εἶπαν μέγα τοῦτο τὸ ῥῆμά σου ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς ποιῆσαι

All the assembly answered in a loud voice, “We will do as you have said.

13 ἀλλὰ ὁ λαὸς πολύς καὶ ὁ καιρὸς χειμερινός καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν δύναμις στῆναι ἔξω καὶ τὸ ἔργον οὐκ εἰς ἡμέραν μίαν καὶ οὐκ εἰς δύο ὅτι ἐπληθύναμεν τοῦ ἀδικῆσαι ἐν τῷ ῥήματι τούτῳ

However, there are many people, and it is the rainy season. We have no strength to stand outside, and this is not only one or two days of work, since we have greatly transgressed in this matter.

14 στήτωσαν δὴ οἱ ἄρχοντες ἡμῶν τῇ πάσῃ ἐκκλησίᾳ καὶ πάντες οἱ ἐν πόλεσιν ἡμῶν ὃς ἐκάθισεν γυναῖκας ἀλλοτρίας ἐλθέτωσαν εἰς καιροὺς ἀπὸ συνταγῶν καὶ μετ’ αὐτῶν πρεσβύτεροι πόλεως καὶ πόλεως καὶ κριταὶ τοῦ ἀποστρέψαι ὀργὴν θυμοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν ἐξ ἡμῶν περὶ τοῦ ῥήματος τούτου

So let our officials represent all the assembly. Let all who have allowed foreign women to live in our cities come at the time that will be fixed with the city elders and the city judges until the raging wrath of our God goes away from us.”

15 πλὴν Ιωναθαν υἱὸς Ασαηλ καὶ Ιαζια υἱὸς Θεκουε μετ’ ἐμοῦ περὶ τούτου καὶ Μεσουλαμ καὶ Σαβαθαι ὁ Λευίτης βοηθῶν αὐτοῖς

Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supported them.

16 καὶ ἐποίησαν οὕτως υἱοὶ τῆς ἀποικίας καὶ διεστάλησαν Εσδρας ὁ ἱερεὺς καὶ ἄνδρες ἄρχοντες πατριῶν τῷ οἴκῳ καὶ πάντες ἐν ὀνόμασιν ὅτι ἐπέστρεψαν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ μιᾷ τοῦ μηνὸς τοῦ δεκάτου ἐκζητῆσαι τὸ ῥῆμα

So the people who returned from exile did this. Ezra the priest selected men, the leaders in their ancestors' clans and houses—all of them by name, and they looked into the matter on the first day of the tenth month.

17 καὶ ἐτέλεσαν ἐν πᾶσιν ἀνδράσιν οἳ ἐκάθισαν γυναῖκας ἀλλοτρίας ἕως ἡμέρας μιᾶς τοῦ μηνὸς τοῦ πρώτου

By the first day of the first month they had finished discovering which men had lived with foreign women.

18 καὶ εὑρέθησαν ἀπὸ υἱῶν τῶν ἱερέων οἳ ἐκάθισαν γυναῖκας ἀλλοτρίας ἀπὸ υἱῶν Ἰησοῦ υἱοῦ Ιωσεδεκ καὶ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ Μαασηα καὶ Ελιεζερ καὶ Ιαριβ καὶ Γαδαλια

Among the descendants of the priests there were those who had lived with foreign women. Among the descendants of Jeshua son of Jozadak and his brothers there were Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah.

19 καὶ ἔδωκαν χεῖρα αὐτῶν τοῦ ἐξενέγκαι γυναῖκας αὐτῶν καὶ πλημμελείας κριὸν ἐκ προβάτων περὶ πλημμελήσεως αὐτῶν

So they determined to send their wives away. Since they were guilty, they offered a ram from the flock for their guilt.

20 καὶ ἀπὸ υἱῶν Εμμηρ Ανανι καὶ Ζαβδια

Among the descendants of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah.

21 καὶ ἀπὸ υἱῶν Ηραμ Μασαια καὶ Ελια καὶ Σαμαια καὶ Ιιηλ καὶ Οζια

Among the descendants of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah.

22 καὶ ἀπὸ υἱῶν Φασουρ Ελιωηναι Μαασαια καὶ Ισμαηλ καὶ Ναθαναηλ καὶ Ιωζαβαδ καὶ Ηλασα

Among the descendants of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.

23 καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν Λευιτῶν Ιωζαβαδ καὶ Σαμου καὶ Κωλια αὐτὸς Κωλιτας καὶ Φαθαια καὶ Ιοδομ καὶ Ελιεζερ

Among the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah—that is, Kelita, Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

24 καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ᾀδόντων Ελισαφ καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν πυλωρῶν Σελλημ καὶ Τελημ καὶ Ωδουε

Among the singers: Eliashib. Among the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem, and Uri.

25 καὶ ἀπὸ Ισραηλ ἀπὸ υἱῶν Φορος Ραμια καὶ Ιαζια καὶ Μελχια καὶ Μεαμιν καὶ Ελεαζαρ καὶ Ασαβια καὶ Βαναια

Among the rest of the Israelites—among the descendants of Parosh: Ramiah, Izziah, Malchijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malchijah, and Benaiah.

26 καὶ ἀπὸ υἱῶν Ηλαμ Μαθανια καὶ Ζαχαρια καὶ Ιαϊηλ καὶ Αβδια καὶ Ιαριμωθ καὶ Ηλια

Among the descendants of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Elijah.

27 καὶ ἀπὸ υἱῶν Ζαθουα Ελιωηναι Ελισουβ Μαθανια καὶ Ιαρμωθ καὶ Ζαβαδ καὶ Οζιζα

Among the descendants of Zattu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza.

28 καὶ ἀπὸ υἱῶν Βαβι Ιωαναν Ανανια καὶ Ζαβου Οθαλι

Among the descendants of Bebai: Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai.

29 καὶ ἀπὸ υἱῶν Βανουι Μεσουλαμ Μαλουχ Αδαιας Ιασουβ καὶ Σαλουια καὶ Ρημωθ

Among the descendants of Bani: Meshullam, Malluk, Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal Jeremoth.

30 καὶ ἀπὸ υἱῶν Φααθμωαβ Εδενε Χαληλ Βαναια Μασηα Μαθανια Βεσεληλ καὶ Βανουι καὶ Μανασση

Among the descendants of Pahath-Moab: Adna, Kelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui, and Manasseh.

31 καὶ ἀπὸ υἱῶν Ηραμ Ελιεζερ Ιεσσια Μελχια Σαμαια Σεμεων

Among the descendants of Harim: Eliezer, Ishijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon,

32 Βενιαμιν Μαλουχ Σαμαρια

Benjamin, Malluk, and Shemariah.

33 καὶ ἀπὸ υἱῶν Ησαμ Μαθανι Μαθαθα Ζαβεδ Ελιφαλεθ Ιεραμι Μανασση Σεμεϊ

Among the descendants of Hashum: Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei.

34 ἀπὸ υἱῶν Βανι Μοοδι Αμραμ Ουηλ

Among the descendants of Bani: Maadai, Amram, Uel,

35 Βαναια Βαδαια Χελια

Benaiah, Bedeiah, Keluhi,

36 Ουιεχωα Ιεραμωθ Ελιασιβ

Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib,

37 Μαθανια Μαθαναι καὶ ἐποίησαν

Mattaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasu.

38 οἱ υἱοὶ Βανουι καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ Σεμεϊ

Among the descendants of Binnui: Shimei,

39 καὶ Σελεμια καὶ Ναθαν καὶ Αδαια

Shelemiah, Nathan, Adaiah,

40 Μαχναδαβου Σεσι Σαρου

Maknadebai, Shashai, Sharai,

41 Εζερηλ καὶ Σελεμια καὶ Σαμαρια

Azarel, Shelemiah, Shemariah,

42 καὶ Σαλουμ Αμαρια Ιωσηφ

Shallum, Amariah, and Joseph.

43 ἀπὸ υἱῶν Ναβου Ιιηλ Μαθαθια Σεδεμ Ζαμβινα Ιαδαι καὶ Ιωηλ καὶ Βαναια

Among the descendants of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, Joel, and Benaiah.

44 πάντες οὗτοι ἐλάβοσαν γυναῖκας ἀλλοτρίας καὶ ἐγέννησαν ἐξ αὐτῶν υἱούς

All of these had taken foreign wives and had children with some of them.
