Lukas 14
1 Und es begab sich, daß er kam in ein Haus eines Obersten der Pharisäer auf einen Sabbat, das Brot zu essen. Und sie hielten auf ihn.
One day--it was a Sabbath--He was taking a meal at the house of one of the Rulers of the Pharisee party, while they were closely watching Him.
2 Und siehe, da war ein Mensch vor ihm der war wassersüchtig.
In front of Him was a man suffering from dropsy.
3 Und Jesus antwortete und sagte zu den Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäern und sprach: Ist's auch recht, auf den Sabbat heilen?
This led Jesus to ask the lawyers and Pharisees, "Is it allowable to cure people on the Sabbath?"
4 Sie aber schwiegen stille. Und er griff ihn an und heilete ihn und ließ ihn gehen.
They gave Him no answer; so He took hold of the man, cured him, and sent him away.
5 Und antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Welcher ist unter euch, dem sein Ochse oder Esel in den Brunnen fällt, und er nicht alsbald ihn herauszieht am Sabbattage?
Then He turned to them and said, "Which of you shall have a child or an ox fall into a well on the Sabbath day, and will not immediately lift him out?"
6 Und sie konnten ihm darauf nicht wieder Antwort geben.
To this they could make no reply.
7 Er sagte aber ein Gleichnis zu den Gästen, da, er merkte, wie sie erwähleten, obenan zu sitzen, und sprach zu ihnen:
Then, when He noticed that the invited guests chose the best seats, He used this as an illustration and said to them,
8 Wenn du von jemand geladen wirst zur Hochzeit, so setze dich nicht obenan, daß nicht etwa ein Ehrlicherer denn du von ihm geladen sei,
"When any one invites you to a wedding banquet, do not take the best seat, lest perhaps some more honoured guest than you may have been asked,
9 und so dann kommt, der dich und ihn geladen hat, spreche zu dir: Weiche diesem! und du müssest dann mit Scham untenan sitzen.
and the man who invited you both will come and will say to you, 'Make room for this guest,' and then you, ashamed, will move to the lowest place.
10 Sondern wenn du geladen wirst, so gehe hin und setze dich untenan, auf daß, wenn da kommt, der dich geladen hat, spreche zu dir: Freund, rücke hinauf! Dann wirst du Ehre haben vor denen, die mit dir zu Tische sitzen.
On the contrary, when you are invited go and take the lowest place, that when your host comes round he may say to you, 'My friend, come up higher.' This will be doing you honour in the presence of all the other guests.
11 Denn wer sich selbst erhöhet, der soll erniedriget werden; und wer sich selbst erniedriget, der soll erhöhet werden.
For whoever uplifts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be uplifted.
12 Er sprach auch zu dem, der ihn geladen hatte: Wenn du ein Mittags -oder Abendmahl machest, so lade nicht deine Freunde noch deine Brüder noch deine Gefreundeten noch deine Nachbarn, die da reich sind, auf daß sie dich nicht etwa wieder laden, und dir vergolten werde.
Also to His host, who had invited Him, He said, "When you give a breakfast or a dinner, do not invite your friends or brothers or relatives or rich neighbours, lest perhaps they should invite you in return and a requital be made you.
13 Sondern wenn du ein Mahl machest, lade die Armen, die Krüppel, die Lahmen, die Blinden,
But when you entertain, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind;
14 so bist du selig; denn sie haben's dir nicht zu vergelten; es wird dir aber vergolten werden in der Auferstehung der Gerechten.
and you will be blessed, because they have no means of requiting you, but there will be requital for you at the Resurrection of the righteous."
15 Da aber solches hörete einer, der mit zu Tisch saß, sprach er zu ihm: Selig ist, der das Brot isset im Reich Gottes.
After listening to this teaching, one of His fellow guests said to Him, "Blessed is he who shall feast in God's Kingdom."
16 Er aber sprach zu ihm: Es war ein Mensch, der machte ein groß Abendmahl und lud viele dazu.
"A man once gave a great dinner," replied Jesus, "to which he invited a large number of guests.
17 Und sandte seinen Knecht aus zur Stunde des Abendmahls, zu sagen den Geladenen: Kommt, denn es ist alles bereit!
At dinner-time he sent his servant to announce to those who had been invited, "'Come, for things are now ready.'
18 Und sie fingen an alle nacheinander, sich zu entschuldigen. Der erste sprach zu ihm: Ich habe einen Acker gekauft und muß hinausgehen und ihn besehen; ich bitte dich, entschuldige mich.
"But they all without exception began to excuse themselves. The first told him, "'I have purchased a piece of land, and must of necessity go and look at it. Pray hold me excused.'
19 Und der andere sprach: Ich habe fünf Joch Ochsen gekauft, und ich gehe jetzt hin, sie zu besehen; ich bitte dich, entschuldige mich.
"A second pleaded, "'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and am on my way to try them. Pray hold me excused.'
20 Und der dritte sprach: Ich habe ein Weib genommen, darum kann ich nicht kommen.
"Another said, "'I am just married. It is impossible for me to come.'
21 Und der Knecht kam und sagte das seinem HERRN wieder. Da ward der Hausherr zornig und sprach zu seinem Knechte: Gehe aus bald auf die Straßen und Gassen der Stadt und führe die Armen und Krüppel und Lahmen und Blinden herein.
"So the servant came and brought these answers to his master, and they stirred his anger. "'Go out quickly,' he said, 'into the streets of the city--the wide ones and the narrow. You will see poor men, and crippled, blind, lame: fetch them all in here.'
22 Und der Knecht sprach: HERR, es ist geschehen, was du befohlen hast; es ist aber noch Raum da.
"Soon the servant reported the result, saying, "'Sir, what you ordered is done, and there is room still.'
23 Und der HERR sprach zu dem Knechte: Gehe aus auf die Landstraßen und an die Zäune und nötige sie hereinzukommen, auf daß mein Haus voll werde.
"'Go out,' replied the master, 'to the high roads and hedge-rows, and compel the people to come in, so that my house may be filled.
24 Ich sage euch aber, daß der Männer keiner; die geladen sind; mein Abendmahl schmecken wird.
For I tell you that not one of those who were invited shall taste my dinner.'"
25 Es ging aber viel Volks mit ihm. Und er wandte sich und sprach zu ihnen:
On His journey vast crowds attended Him, towards whom He turned and said,
26 So jemand zu mir kommt und hasset nicht seinen Vater, Mutter, Weib, Kinder, Brüder, Schwestern, auch dazu sein eigen Leben, der kann nicht mein Jünger sein.
"If any one is coming to me who does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes and his own life also, he cannot be a disciple of mine.
27 Und wer nicht sein Kreuz trägt und mir nachfolget, der kann nicht mein Jünger sein.
No one who does not carry his own cross and come after me can be a disciple of mine.
28 Wer ist aber unter euch, der einen Turm bauen will und sitzt nicht zuvor und überschlägt die Kosten, ob er's habe hinauszuführen?
"Which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not sit down first and calculate the cost, asking if he has the means to finish it? --
29 auf daß nicht, wo er den Grund gelegt hat und kann's nicht hinausführen, alle, die es sehen, fangen an sein zu spotten
lest perhaps, when he has laid the foundation and is unable to finish, all who see it shall begin to jeer at him,
30 und sagen: Dieser Mensch hub an zu bauen und kann's nicht hinausführen!
saying, 'This man began to build, but could not finish.'
31 Oder welcher König will sich begeben in einen Streit wider einen andern König und sitzt nicht zuvor und ratschlagt, ob er könnte mit zehntausend begegnen dem, der über ihn kommt mit zwanzigtausend?
Or what king, marching to encounter another king in war, does not first sit down and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand men to meet the one who is advancing against him with twenty thousand?
32 Wo nicht, so schickt er Botschaft, wenn jener noch ferne ist, und bittet um Frieden.
If not, while the other is still a long way off, he sends messengers and sues for peace.
33 Also auch ein jeglicher unter euch, der nicht absagt allem, was er hat, kann nicht mein Jünger sein.
Just as no one of you who does not detach himself from all that belongs to him can be a disciple of mine.
34 Das Salz ist ein gut Ding; wo aber das Salz dumm wird, womit wird man würzen?
"Salt is good: but if even the salt has become tasteless, what will you use to season it?
35 Es ist weder auf das Land noch in den Mist nütze, sondern man wird's wegwerfen. Wer Ohren hat zu hören, der höre!
Neither for land nor dunghill is it of any use; they throw it away. Listen, every one who has ears to listen with!"
