Psalm 116

1 Ich freue mich, daß Jahwe vernimmt mein lautes Flehn.

I love the Lord because he listens to me, he hears my calls for help.

2 Denn er hat sein Ohr zu mir geneigt, und mein Leben lang will ich rufen.

Because he pays attention to what I say I will pray to him as long as I live.

3 Des Todes Bande hatten mich umfangen, und der Unterwelt Ängste mich getroffen; ich stieß auf Drangsal und Kummer. (Sheol h7585)

I was caught in the snares of death; I was trapped by terrors of the grave. All I experienced was suffering and grief. (Sheol h7585)

4 Aber ich rief den Namen Jahwes an: “Ach, Jahwe, errette meine Seele!”

Then I cried out to the Lord, “Lord, please save me!”

5 Gnädig ist Jahwe und gerecht, und unser Gott ein Erbarmer.

The Lord is so kind and good! Our God is so compassionate!

6 Jahwe behütet die Einfältigen; bin ich schwach, so hilft er mir.

The Lord takes care of those who are powerless; when I was brought down he saved me.

7 Kehre meine Seele, zu deiner Ruhe zurück, denn Jahwe hat dir wohlgethan.

I can once again be at peace because the Lord has been good to me.

8 Denn du hast meine Seele vom Tode befreit, mein Auge von den Thränen, meinen Fuß vom Sturze.

For you have saved me from death, my eyes from crying, and my feet from stumbling.

9 Ich werde vor dem Angesichte Jahwes wandeln in den Landen der Lebenden.

Now I can walk with the Lord in the land of the living.

10 Ich vertraue, wenn ich rede; ich bin sehr gebeugt.

I trusted in you, so I told you, “I'm suffering terribly!”

11 Ich sprach in meiner Bestürzung: alle Menschen lügen.

I was so upset that I said, “Everyone's a liar!”

12 Wie soll ich Jahwe vergelten alle seine Wohlthaten gegen mich?

What can I give the Lord in return for all he's done for me?

13 Ich will den Rettungsbecher erheben und den Namen Jahwes anrufen.

I will lift up the cup of salvation and worship the Lord.

14 Meine Gelübde will ich Jahwe bezahlen und zwar angesichts seines ganzen Volks.

I will keep my promises to the Lord so everyone can see.

15 Kostbar ist in den Augen Jahwes der Tod seiner Frommen.

It hurts the Lord when those who trust in him die.

16 Ach, Jahwe! - Denn ich bin dein Knecht; ich bin dein Knecht, der Sohn deiner Magd: du hast meine Bande gelöst.

Lord, I really am your slave, serving you as my mother served you before me, yet you have set me free.

17 Dir will ich ein Dankopfer bringen und den Namen Jahwes anrufen.

I will offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to you and I will worship you.

18 Meine Gelübde will ich Jahwe bezahlen und zwar angesichts seines ganzen Volks,

I will keep my promises to the Lord so everyone can see,

19 in den Vorhöfen des Tempels Jahwes, in deiner Mitte, Jerusalem! Rühmet Jah!

there in the house of the Lord, right in Jerusalem. Praise the Lord!
