1 Auch dies sind Sprüche Salomos, welche zusammengestellt haben die Männer Hiskias, des Königs von Juda.
These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
2 Es ist Gottes Ehre, eine Sache verbergen, aber der Könige Ehre ist's, eine Sache erforschen.
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
3 Wie des Himmels Höhe und der Erde Tiefe, so ist auch der Könige Herz unerforschlich.
As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, so the heart of kings is unsearchable.
4 Werden die Schlacken vom Silber entfernt, so wird ein reines Gefäß daraus.
Take away the dross from the silver, and there comes forth a vessel for the refiner.
5 Man entferne die Gottlosen aus des Königs Nähe, so wird durch Gerechtigkeit sein Thron befestigt.
Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.
6 Prunke nicht vor dem König und stelle dich nicht auf den Platz der Großen.
Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men.
7 Denn es ist besser, daß man zu dir sage: Rücke herauf! als daß man dich erniedrige vor einem Vornehmen, den du doch wohl bemerkt hattest.
For it is better that it be said to thee, Come up here, than that thou should be put lower in the presence of the prince, whom thine eyes have seen.
8 Gehe nicht rasch zum Streiten vor; denn was willst du hinterher machen, wenn dich dein Nächster beschämt?
Go not forth hastily to strive. What will thou do in the end of it when thy neighbor has put thee to shame?
9 Führe deinen Streit mit deinem Nächsten, aber eines andern Geheimnis verrate nicht,
Debate thy case with thy neighbor himself, and disclose not the secret of another,
10 auf daß dich nicht beschimpfe, wer es hört, und dein böser Ruf nimmer aufhöre.
lest he who hears it revile thee, and thine infamy turn not away.
11 Goldene Äpfel in silberner Prunkschale - so ein Wort, geredet zu rechter Zeit.
A word fitly spoken is apples of gold in a network of silver.
12 Wie ein goldener Ring und ein Geschmeide von Feingold, so ein weiser Mahner am hörenden Ohr.
An earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.
13 Wie die Kühle des Schnees zur Erntezeit, so ist ein zuverlässiger Bote dem, der ihn sendet; denn er erquickt die Seele seines Herrn.
As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, is a faithful messenger to those who send him, for he refreshes the soul of his masters.
14 Gewölk und Wind und doch kein Regen - so ist ein Mann, der mit Geschenken prahlt, die er doch nie giebt.
Clouds and wind without rain, is he who boasts himself of his gifts falsely.
15 Durch Geduld läßt sich ein Richter überreden, und eine gelinde Zunge zerbricht Knochen.
By long-suffering a ruler is persuaded, and a soft tongue breaks the bone.
16 Hast du Honig gefunden, so iß, was dir genügt, daß du seiner nicht satt werdest und ihn dann ausspeiest.
Have thou found honey? Eat as much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled with it, and vomit it.
17 Laß deinen Fuß selten sein im Hause deines Nächsten, daß er deiner nicht überdrüssig und dir gram werde.
Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbor's house, lest he be weary of thee, and hate thee.
18 Hammer und Schwert und scharfer Pfeil - so ein Mann, der wider seinen Nächsten als falscher Zeuge aussagt.
A man who bears false witness against his neighbor is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.
19 Ein morscher Zahn und ein wankender Fuß - so daß Vertrauen auf einen Treulosen am Tage der Not.
Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.
20 Wie einer, der am kalten Tage das Kleid ablegt, wie Essig auf bösen Grind, also ist, wer einem betrübten Herzen Lieder singt.
As he who takes off a garment in cold weather, and vinegar upon soda, so is he who sings songs to a heavy heart.
21 Hungert deinen Hasser, so speise ihn mit Brot, und dürstet ihn, so tränke ihn mit Wasser.
If thine enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
22 Denn damit häufst du feurige Kohlen auf sein Haupt, und Jahwe wird dir's vergelten.
