1 Gleich Wasserbächen ist des Königs Herz in der Hand Jahwes; wohin er irgend will, lenkt er es.
THE king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.
2 Alle seine Wege hält ein Mann für recht; aber Jahwe ist's, der die Herzen wägt.
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts.
3 Gerechtigkeit und Recht üben, ist Jahwe lieber als Schlachtopfer.
To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
4 Hochfahrende Augen und aufgeblasener Sinn, - die Leuchte der Gottlosen ist Sünde.
An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.
5 Des Fleißigen Anschläge führen nur zu Gewinn, aber jeder Hastige bringt's nur zu Mangel.
The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.
6 Schätze, mit falscher Zunge erworben, sind wie verwehter Hauch, Fallstricke des Todes.
The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death.
7 Die Gewaltthätigkeit der Gottlosen zieht sie sich nach, denn sie weigern sich, Recht zu üben.
The robbery of the wicked shall destroy them; because they refuse to do judgment.
8 Wer mit Schuld beladen ist, geht gewundene Wege; wer aber lauter ist, des Thun ist redlich.
The way of man is froward and strange: but as for the pure, his work is right.
9 Lieber auf der Zinne eines Daches wohnen, als ein zänkisches Weib und gemeinsames Haus.
It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.
10 Die Seele des Gottlosen gelüstet nach Bösem; sein Nächster findet bei ihm kein Erbarmen.
The soul of the wicked desireth evil: his neighbour findeth no favour in his eyes.
11 Wird dem Spötter Buße auferlegt, so wird der Einfältige weise, und belehrt man einen Weisen, so nimmt er Erkenntnis an.
When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge.
12 Ein gerechter Gott achtet auf des Gottlosen Haus, stürzt die Gottlosen ins Unglück.
The righteous man wisely considereth the house of the wicked: but God overthroweth the wicked for their wickedness.
13 Wer sein Ohr vor dem Schreien des Geringen verstopft, der wird, wenn er ruft, auch kein Gehör finden.
Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.
14 Heimliche Gabe besänftigt den Zorn und ein Geschenk im Busen heftigen Grimm.
A gift in secret pacifieth anger: and a reward in the bosom strong wrath.
15 Freude ist's dem Frommen, zu thun, was recht ist, aber ein Schrecken für die Übelthäter.
It is joy to the just to do judgment: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.
16 Ein Mensch, der vom Wege der Klugheit abirrt, wird bald in der Versammlung der Schatten ruhn.
The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.
17 Dem Mangel verfällt, wer Lustbarkeit liebt; wer Wein und Salböl liebt, der wird nicht reich.
He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.
18 Ein Lösegeld für den Frommen ist der Gottlose, und an der Rechtschaffenen Stelle tritt der Treulose.
The wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous, and the transgressor for the upright.
19 Lieber in wüstem Lande wohnen, als ein zänkisches Weib und Ärger dabei.
It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.
20 Köstlicher Schatz und Öl ist in des Weisen Behausung aber ein thörichter Mensch vergeudet es.
There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.
21 Wer der Gerechtigkeit und Güte nachjagt, der erlangt Leben, Gerechtigkeit und Ehre.
He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour.
22 Die Stadt der Helden ersteigt ein Weiser und stürzt das Bollwerk, auf das sie sich verließ.
A wise man scaleth the city of the mighty, and casteth down the strength of the confidence thereof.
23 Wer seinen Mund und seine Zunge bewahrt, der bewahrt sein Leben vor Gefahren.
Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.
24 Wer übermütig, vermessen ist, der heißt ein Spötter, wer in maßlosem Übermut handelt.
Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath.
25 Des Faulen Verlangen tötet ihn, denn seine Hände weigern sich, zu schaffen.
The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.
26 Immerfort hat der Faule zu wünschen, aber der Fromme giebt und spart nicht.
He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not.
27 Das Schlachtopfer der Gottlosen ist ein Greuel für Jahwe, vollends, wenn es einer für eine Schandthat bringt.
The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind?
28 Ein lügenhafter Zeuge wird zu Grunde gehn, aber ein Mann, der gehört hat, darf immerdar reden.
A false witness shall perish: but the man that heareth speaketh constantly.
29 Eine sichere Miene zeigt der gottlose Mann; wer aber rechtschaffen ist, der giebt seinem Wege Sicherheit.
A wicked man hardeneth his face: but as for the upright, he directeth his way.
30 Es giebt weder Weisheit noch Einsicht, noch giebt es Rat gegenüber Jahwe.
There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the Lord.
31 Das Roß ist gerüstet für den Tag der Schlacht, aber der Sieg kommt von Jahwe.
The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the Lord.
