1 Besser ein trockener Bissen und Ruhe dabei, als das Haus voller Opferfleisch mit Hader.
Better is a dry morsel with joy, than a house full of victims with strife.
2 Ein kluger Sklave wird über den schandbaren Sohn Herr sein und inmitten der Brüder das Erbe teilen.
A wise servant shall rule over foolish sons, and shall divide the inheritance among the brethren.
3 Der Tiegel dient für das Silber und der Schmelzofen für das Gold, aber die Herzen prüft Jahwe.
As silver is tried by fire, and gold in the furnace: so the Lord trieth the hearts.
4 Der Bösewicht achtet auf die heillose Lippe; die Falschheit hört auf die verderbliche Zunge.
The evil man obeyeth an unjust tongue: and the deceitful hearkeneth to lying lips.
5 Wer den Armen verspottet, lästert dessen Schöpfer; wer sich über Unglück freut, wird nicht straflos bleiben.
He that despiseth the poor, reproacheth his Maker; and he that rejoiceth at another man’s ruin, shall not be unpunished.
6 Der Alten Krone sind Kindeskinder, und der Kinder Ruhm sind ihre Väter.
Children’s children are the crown of old men: and the glory of children are their fathers.
7 Einem Thoren ziemt nicht würdevolle Rede, wie viel weniger einem Edlen lügnerische Lippe.
Eloquent words do not become a fool, nor lying lips a prince.
8 Als ein köstlicher Stein gilt das Bestechungsgeschenk dem, der es empfängt; überall, wohin sich einer damit wendet, wird's ihm glücken.
The expectation of him that expecteth, is a most acceptable jewel: whithersoever he turneth himself, he understandeth wisely.
9 Wer Vergehung zudeckt, sucht Liebe; wer aber eine Sache wieder aufrührt, bringt vertraute Freunde auseinander.
He that concealeth a transgression. seeketh friendships: he that repeateth it again, separateth friends.
10 Schelten dringt bei einem Verständigen tiefer ein, als hundert Schläge bei einem Thoren.
A reproof availeth more with a wise man, than a hundred stripes with a fool.
11 Nur nach Unheil trachtet der Empörer, aber ein grausamer Bote wird wider ihn gesandt.
An evil man always seeketh quarrels: but a cruel angel shall be sent against him.
12 Lieber einer Bärin begegnen, der die Jungen geraubt sind, als einem Thoren in seiner Narrheit!
It is better to meet a bear robbed of her whelps, than a fool trusting in his own folly.
13 Wer Gutes mit Bösem vergilt, von dessen Hause wird das Böse nicht weichen.
He that rendereth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

The beginning of quarrels is as when one letteth out water: before he suffereth reproach he forsaketh judgment.
15 Wer den, der Unrecht hat, freispricht und den, der Recht hat, verdammt, die sind alle beide für Jahwe ein Greuel.
He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, both are abominable before God.
16 Was hilft denn das Geld in des Thoren Hand zum Erwerb von Weisheit, da doch kein Verstand vorhanden ist?
What doth it avail a fool to have riches, seeing he cannot buy wisdom? He that maketh his house high, seeketh a downfall: and he that refuseth to learn, shall fall into evils.
17 Zu jeder Zeit liebt der Freund, und wird in der Not als Bruder geboren.
He that is a friend loveth at all times: and a brother is proved in distress.
18 Ein unverständiger Mensch ist, wer Handschlag giebt, wer bei seinem Nächsten Bürgschaft übernimmt.
A foolish man will clap hands, when he is surety for his friend.
19 Versündigung liebt, wer Zank liebt; wer seine Thüre hoch macht, trachtet nach Einsturz.
He that studieth discords, loveth quarrels: and he that exalteth his door, seeketh ruin.
20 Wer verkehrtes Herzens ist, findet kein Glück, und wer sich mit seiner Zunge windet, fällt in Unglück.
He that is of a perverse heart, shall not find good: and he that perverteth his tongue, shall fall into evil.
21 Wer einen Thoren erzeugt, dem bringt's Grämen, und der Vater eines Narren kann sich nicht freuen.
A fool is born to his own disgrace: and even his father shall not rejoice in a fool.
22 Ein fröhlicher Sinn schafft gute Heilung, aber ein niedergeschlagenes Gemüt dörrt das Gebein aus.
A joyful mind maketh age flourishing: a sorrowful spirit drieth up the bones.
23 Bestechung nimmt heimlich der Gottlose an, um die Pfade des Rechts zu beugen.
The wicked man taketh gifts out of the bosom, that he may pervert the paths of judgment.
24 Der Verständige hat die Weisheit vor sich stehn, aber die Augen des Thoren sind am Ende der Erde.
Wisdom shineth in the face of the wise: the eyes of fools are in the ends of the earth.
25 Ein Ärger für seinen Vater ist der thörichte Sohn und bitterer Kummer für die, die ihn geboren.
A foolish son is the anger of the father: and the sorrow of the mother that bore him.
26 Schon daß man dem, der im Rechte ist, eine Geldbuße auferlegt, ist ein übles Ding; daß man Edlen Schläge giebt, ist's in hohem Maß.
It is no good thing to do hurt to the just: nor to strike the prince, who judgeth right.
27 Wer mit seinen Worten zurückhält, ist einsichtsvoll, und der Kaltblütige ist ein vernünftiger Mann.
He that setteth bounds to his words. is knowing and wise: and the man of understanding is of a precious spirit.
28 Auch ein Narr kann, wenn er schweigt, für einen Weisen gelten, wenn er seine Lippen verschließt, für einen Verständigen.
Even a fool, if he will hold his peace shall be counted wise: and if he close his lips, a man of understanding.
