Obadja 1

1 Die Offenbarung an Obadja. So spricht der Herr Jahwe über Edom: Eine Kunde haben wir vernommen von Jahwe her, und eine Botschaft ward unter die Völker gesandt: Auf! Laßt uns aufbrechen, es zu bekriegen!

The vision of 'Obadiah: Thus hath said the Lord Eternal concerning Edom, A rumor have we heard from the Lord, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her to war.

2 Fürwahr, ich will dich klein machen unter den Völkern, überaus verachtet wirst du sein!

Behold, I make thee small among the nations: thou shalt be greatly despised.

3 Dein vermessener Sinn hat dich bethört als einen, der in Felsenhängen wohnt, auf seinem hohen Sitze, der da denkt in seinem Sinn: Wer könnte mich zur Erde hinabstürzen!

The presumption of thy heart hath beguiled thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

4 Wenn du auch horstetest hoch wie der Adler, und wenn dein Nest zwischen die Sterne gesetzt wäre, ich stürzte dich von dort herab, ist der Spruch Jahwes.

Though thou wert to rise as high as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the Lord.

5 Wenn dir Diebe ins Haus hineinkommen, wenn nächtliche Räuber - wie bist du zu Grunde gerichtet! - so rauben sie doch nur, bis sie befriedigt sind. Wenn dir Winzer in den Weinberg hineinkommen, lassen sie nicht eine Nachlese übrig?

How? are thieves come to thee? or night-prowling robbers? how destroyed art thou! would they not have stolen till they had enough? if grape-gatherers had come to thee, would they not have left some gleanings?

6 Wie ist aber Esau durchsucht, seine verborgensten Örter durchstöbert!

How are [the treasures] of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things laid open!

7 An die Grenze weisen dich alle, die deine Bundesgenossen waren. Es betrügen dich, überwältigen dich, die dir befreundet waren; die dein Brot aßen, stellen dir Fallen, die nicht zu merken sind.

Up to the border have accompanied thee all the men of thy confederacy; beguiled, overcome thee have the men that were at peace with thee: [they that eat] thy bread have struck thee secretly a wound. There is no understanding in him.

8 Fürwahr! an jenem Tag, ist der Spruch Jahwes, werde ich die Weisen aus Edom hinwegtilgen und die Einsicht aus dem Gebirge Esaus.

Shall I not on that same day, saith the Lord, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?

9 Deine Helden, Theman, sollen verzagen, damit auch der letzte Mann aus dem Gebirge Esaus ausgerottet werde im Gemetzel.

And thy mighty men, O Theman, shall be dismayed, in order that every one from the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.

10 Wegen der Frevelthat an deinem Bruder Jakob wirst du mit Schande bedeckt sein und bist du für immer vernichtet.

Because of thy violence against thy brother Jacob shall shame cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.

11 Am Tage, da du ihm entgegen tratest, am Tage, da fremde Feinde sein Vermögen wegschleppten und Ausländer in seine Thore eindrangen und über Jerusalem das Los warfen, warst auch du dabei, als ob du zu ihnen gehörtest.

On the day that thou stoodest on the other side, on the day that strangers carried away captive his army, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots over Jerusalem, also thou wast as any one of them.

12 Schau doch nicht so deine Lust am Unglückstage deines Bruders, am Tage seines Mißgeschicks, freue dich doch nicht so über die Judäer am Tage ihres Untergangs, und sperre doch nicht deinen Mund so weit auf am Tage der Bedrängnis!

But thou shouldst not have looked on [pleased] at the day of thy brother, on the day that he was delivered up to strangers; neither shouldst thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah on the day of their destruction; nor should thou have spoken proudly on the day of distress.

13 Dringe doch nicht ein in das Thor meines Volks an ihrem Unglückstage, schau nicht auch du deine Lust an seinem Unheil an seinem Unglückstage und strecke doch nicht deine Hand aus nach seinem Gut an seinem Unglückstage!

Thou shouldst not have entered into the gate of my people on the day of their calamity; yea, thou too shouldst not have looked [pleased] on their affliction on the day of their calamity; nor have laid hands on their army on the day of their calamity;

14 Stelle dich doch nicht am Scheideweg auf, um seine Flüchtlinge niederzumachen, und fange doch seine Entronnenen nicht ab am Tage der Bedrängnis!

Neither shouldst thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldst thou have delivered up those of his that did remain on the day of distress.

15 Denn nahe ist der Tag des Gerichts Jahwes über alle Völker: Ganz wie du gehandelt hast, wird dir geschehen; deine Thaten fallen auf dein Haupt zurück!

For near is the day of the Lord over all the nations: as thou hast done, shall it be done unto thee; thy deeds shall return upon thy own head.

16 Denn wie ihr getrunken habt auf meinem heiligen Berge, werden alle Völker ohne Aufhören trinken; sie werden trinken und schlürfen und sollen werden wie solche, die nie gewesen.

For as ye have drunk upon my holy mount, so shall all the nations drink continually; yea, they shall drink, and they shall reel about, and they shall be as though they had not been.

17 Aber auf dem Berge Zion soll Rettung sein, und er soll als unantastbares Heiligtum gelten, und die vom Hause Jakobs werden ihre früheren Besitztümer einnehmen.

But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and it shall be holy: and the house of Jacob shall again possess their inheritances.

18 Das Haus Jakobs wird ein Feuer werden, und das Haus Josephs eine lodernde Flamme; das Haus Esaus aber wird zu Stoppeln werden, die werden sie anzünden und verzehren, so daß vom Hause Esaus nichts übrig bleibt; denn Jahwe hat es geredet.

And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau become stubble, and they shall set them on fire, and devour them; and there shall not be any one remaining of the house of Esau; for the Lord hath spoken it.

19 Die im Südlande werden das Gebirge Esaus in Besitz nehmen, und die in der Niederung das Philisterland. Auch das Gefilde Ephraims und das Gefilde Samarias werden sie in Besitz nehmen, und Benjamin wird Gilead erobern.

And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the lowlands, the Philistines; and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin [shall possess] Gil'ad.

20 Die aus dieser Festung gefangen weggeführten Israeliten werden in Besitz nehmen, was den Kanaanitern gehört bis nach Zarpath hin, und die aus Jerusalem weggeführten, die in Sepharad sind, werden die Städte des Südlands in Besitz nehmen.

And the exiles of this host of the children of Israel that are [with] the Canaanites, as far as Zarephath, and the exiles of Jerusalem, who are in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.

21 Retter werden auf den Berg Zion ziehen, um das Gebirge Esaus zu richten, und Jahwe wird die Königsmacht erhalten.

And deliverers shall go up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau: and the kingdom shall be the Lord's
