Matthaeus 4
1 Hierauf wurde Jesus vom Geiste in die Wüste geführt, um vom Teufel versucht zu werden.
Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil.
2 Und als er vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte gefastet hatte, hungerte ihn zuletzt.
And, after he had fasted for forty days and forty nights, he became hungry.
3 Und der Versucher trat herzu und sagte zu ihm: wenn du Gottes Sohn bist, so sprich, daß diese Steine Brot werden.
The Tempter came to him, and said: ‘If you are God’s Son, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.’
4 Er aber antwortete also: es steht geschrieben: nicht vom Brot allein soll der Mensch leben, sondern von jedem Wort, welches durch Gottes Mund ausgeht.
But Jesus answered, ‘Scripture says – “It is not on bread alone that a person is to live, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”’
5 Hierauf nimmt ihn der Teufel mit sich in die heilige Stadt und stellt ihn auf die Zinne des Tempels,
Then the devil took him to the Holy City, and, placing him on the parapet of the temple, said to him,
6 und sagt zu ihm: wenn du Gottes Sohn bist, so stürze dich hinab; denn es steht geschrieben: er wird seinen Engeln Befehl geben deinetwegen und sie werden dich auf den Händen tragen, daß du deinen Fuß nicht an einen Stein stoßest.
‘If you are God’s Son, throw yourself down, for scripture says – “He will give his angels commands about you, and on their hands they will lift you up, so you do not even strike your foot against a stone.”’
7 Sagte Jesus zu ihm: wiederum steht geschrieben: du sollst den Herrn deinen Gott nicht versuchen.
‘Scripture also says,’ answered Jesus, ‘“You must not tempt the Lord your God.”’
8 Wiederum nimmt ihn der Teufel mit auf einen sehr hohen Berg und zeigt ihm alle Reiche der Welt und ihre Herrlichkeit
The third time, the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain, and, showing him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour, said to him:
9 und sagte zu ihm: dies alles will ich dir geben, wenn du niederfällst und mir huldigst.
‘All these I will give you, if you will fall at my feet and worship me.’
10 Hierauf sagt Jesus zu ihm: entweiche, Satan; denn es steht geschrieben: du sollst dem Herrn deinem Gott huldigen und ihn allein anbeten.
Then Jesus said to him, ‘Go away, Satan! For scripture says – “You must worship the Lord your God, and worship him only.”’
11 Hierauf läßt ihn der Teufel, und siehe, Engel kamen herzu und dienten ihm.
Then the devil left him alone, and angels came and helped him.
12 Als er aber hörte, daß Johannes verhaftet sei, zog er sich zurück nach Galiläa;
When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he returned to Galilee.
13 und er verließ Nazara und zog nach Kapernaum, das am See liegt im Gebiete von Sebulon und Naphthali,
Afterwards, leaving Nazareth, he went and settled at Capernaum, which is by the side of the sea, within the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali;
14 damit erfüllt würde, was gesagt ist in dem Wort des Propheten Jesaias:
in fulfilment of these words in the prophet Isaiah –
15 Land Sebulon und Land Naphthali, am Meer hin, und jenseit des Jordan, Galiläa der Heiden,
“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the land of the Road by the sea, and beyond the Jordan, with Galilee of the Gentiles –
16 das Volk, welches in Finsternis sitzt, ein großes Licht hat es erblickt, und denen, die im Todes-Land und Schatten sitzen, ein Licht ist ihnen aufgegangen.
The people who were living in darkness have seen a great light, and, for those who were living in the shadow-land of death, a light has dawned!”
17 Von da an begann Jesus zu verkünden und zu sagen: Thut Buße, denn das Reich der Himmel ist herbeigekommen.
At that time Jesus began to proclaim – ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
18 Da er aber am See von Galiläa wandelte, sah er zwei Brüder, Simon, genannt Petrus, und seinen Bruder Andreas, wie sie ein Fangnetz in den See warfen; denn sie waren Fischer.
As Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers – Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew – casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
19 Und er sagt zu ihnen: kommet mir nach, so will ich euch zu Menschenfischern machen.
‘Come and follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will teach you to fish for people.’
20 Sie aber ließen alsbald die Netze und folgten ihm.
The two men left their nets at once and followed him.
21 Und er gieng weiter von da und sah zwei andere Brüder, Jakobus, den Sohn des Zebedäus, und seinen Bruder Johannes, im Schiff mit ihrem Vater Zebedäus an der Ausbesserung der Netze; und er berief sie.
Going further on, he saw two other men who were also brothers, James, Zebedee’s son, and his brother John, in their boat with their father, mending their nets. Jesus called them,
22 Sie aber verließen alsbald das Schiff und ihren Vater, und folgten ihm.
and they at once left their boat and their father, and followed him.
23 Und er zog umher in ganz Galiläa und lehrte in ihren Synagogen, und verkündete das Evangelium vom Reich, und heilte alle Krankheit und alle Gebrechen unter dem Volk,
Jesus went all through Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people;
24 und es gieng sein Ruf aus über ganz Syria; und sie brachten zu ihm alle die ein Leiden hatten, mit mancherlei Krankheiten und schmerzhaften Uebeln Behaftete, Dämonische, Mondsüchtige und Gelähmte, und er heilte sie.
and his fame spread all through Syria. They brought to him all who were ill with any form of disease, or who were suffering pain – any who were either possessed by demons, or were lunatic, or paralysed; and he cured them.
25 Und es folgten ihm große Massen von Galiläa und der Dekapolis und Jerusalem und Judäa und dem Land jenseit des Jordan.
He was followed by large crowds from Galilee, the district of the Ten Towns, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
