Richter 8
1 Die Ephraimiten aber sprachen zu ihm: Was hast du uns da angethan, daß du uns nicht gerufen hast? Vielmehr bist du allein in den Kampf gegen die Midianiter gezogen! und haderten gewaltig mit ihm.
And the men of Ephraim said unto him, What is this thing that thou hast done unto us, not to call for us, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they quarrelled with him vehemently.
2 Er erwiderte ihnen: Was habe ich nun geleistet im Vergleiche mit euch? Ist die Nachlese Ephraims nicht wichtiger, als die Weinernte Abiesers?
And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abi'ezer?
3 In eure Gewalt hat Gott die midianitischen Fürsten Oreb und Seeb gegeben. Was habe ich im Vergleiche mit euch zu thun vermocht? Als er das sagte, legte sich ihr Zorn, und sie ließen von ihm ab.
Into your hand God delivered the princes of Midian, 'Oreb and Zeeb: and what have I been able to do in comparison with you? Then was their anger abated from him, when he had spoken this speech.
4 Als nun Gideon an den Jordan kam und mit den dreihundert Mann, die von der Verfolgung erschöpft, ihn begleiteten, übergesetzt war,
And Gid'on came to the Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, and in pursuit.
5 bat er die Bürger von Sukkoth: Gebt doch den Leuten, die ich anführe, Brotkuchen, denn sie sind erschöpft, da ich in der Verfolgung der midianitischen Könige Sebah und Zalmunna begriffen bin.
And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, a few loaves of bread unto the people that are in my train; for they are faint, and I am pursuing after Zebach and Zalmunna,' the kings of Midian.
6 Aber die Häupter der Stadt fragten: Hältst du denn Sebahs und Zalmunnas Faust schon in der Hand, daß wir deinem Heere Brot geben sollten?
And the princes of Succoth said, Is the sole of the foot of Zebach and Zalmunna' now already in thy hand, that we should give unto thy army bread?
7 Gideon erwiderte: Nun gut! Wenn Jahwe Sebah und Zalmunna in meine Gewalt giebt, so will ich eure Leiber mit Wüstendornen und Stacheln zerdreschen!
And Gid'on said, Therefore when the Lord hath delivered Zebach and Zalmunna' into my hand, then will I thresh your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.
8 Von da zog er nach Pnuel und sprach sie in derselben Weise an. Aber die Bürger von Pnuel gaben ihm denselben Bescheid, den ihm die Bürger von Sukkoth gegeben hatten.
And he went up thence to Penuel, and spoke unto them in the same manner: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered.
9 Da erwiderte er auch den Bürgern von Pnuel: Wenn ich heil zurückkomme, will ich diese Burg niederreißen!
And he said also unto the men of Penuel thus, When I return again in peace, I will break down this tower.
10 Sebah und Zalmunna aber befanden sich samt ihrem Heer in Karkor - ungefähr 15000 Mann, alle, die noch übrig waren vom ganzen Heere derer von Osten; der Gefallenen hingegen waren 120000 Mann, sämtlich mit Schwertern bewaffnet.
Now Zebach and Zalmunna' were in Karkor, and their camps with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that had been left of all the camp of the children of the east; but those who had fallen were one hundred and twenty thousand men that drew the sword.
11 Da marschierte Gideon auf der Karawanenstraße östlich von Nobah und Jogbeha und überfiel das Lager, während das Heer sorglos dalag.
And Gid'on went up by the way of those that dwelt in tents, to the east of Nobach and Yogbehah, and smote the camp; but the camp thought itself secure.
12 Sebah und Zalmunna flohen; er aber jagte ihnen nach und nahm die beiden midianitischen Könige Sebah und Zalmunna gefangen, das ganze Heer aber scheuchte er auseinander.
And Zebach and Zalmunna' fled; but he pursued after them, and captured the two kings of Midian, Zebach and Zalmunna', and all the camp he discomfited.
13 Sodann kehrte Gideon, der Sohn Joas', an der Steige von Heres von seinem Zuge um.
And Gid'on the son of Joash returned from the battle before the rising of the sun,
14 Darnach griff er einen jungen Mann von den Bürgern Sukkoths auf; den fragte er aus, und er mußte ihm die Häupter und die vornehmsten Bürger von Sukkoth, 77 Mann, aufschreiben.
And he caught a young man of the people of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he wrote down for him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, seventy and seven men.
15 Als er dann zu den Bürgern von Sukkoth kam, rief er: Da sind nun Sebah und Zalmunna, wegen derer ihr mich gehöhnt habt mit der Frage: Hältst du denn Sebahs und Zalmunnas Faust schon in der Hand, daß wir deinen ermatteten Leuten Brot geben sollten?!
And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold here are Zebach and Zalmunna', with whom ye derided me, saying, Is the sole of the foot of Zebach and Zalmunna' now already in thy hand, that we should give unto thy weary men bread?
16 Damit ergriff er die Vornehmsten der Stadt und dazu Wüstendornen und Stacheln und zerdrasch damit die Bürger von Sukkoth.
And he took the elders of the city, and the thorns of the wilderness and briers, and chastised with them the men of Succoth.
17 Die Burg von Pnuel aber zerstörte er und metzelte die Bürger der Stadt nieder.
And the tower of Penuel he beat down, and slew the men of the city.
18 Sodann fragte er Sebah und Zalmunna: Wie waren die Männer gestaltet, die ihr am Thabor erschlagen habt? Sie sprachen: Ganz wie du waren sie: jeder sah aus wie ein Königssohn!
And he said unto Zebach and Zalmunna', What kind of men were those whom ye slew at Tabor! And they answered, As thou art, so were they; one was in form like that of the children of a king.
19 Er sprach: Es waren meine Brüder, meiner Mutter Söhne. So wahr Jahwe lebt: hättet ihr sie am Leben gelassen, so wollte ich euch nicht erschlagen!
And he said, They were my brothers, the sons of my mother; as the Lord liveth, if ye had spared them alive, I would not slay you.
20 Sodann rief er seinem Erstgebornen Jether zu: Auf! haue sie nieder! Aber der Knabe zog sein Schwert nicht, weil er sich scheute; denn er war noch ein Knabe.
And he said unto Yether his first-born, Rise up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword; for he was afraid, because he was yet a youth.
21 Da sprachen Sebah und Zalmunna: Auf, stoße du uns nieder; denn wie der Mann, so seine Kraft! Da stand Gideon auf und hieb Sebah und Zalmunna nieder. Und er nahm die kleinen Monde, die ihre Kamele an den Hälsen trugen.
Then said Zebach and Zalmunna', Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gid'on arose, and slew Zebach and Zalmunna'; and he took away the crescent ornaments that were on the necks of their camels.
22 Hierauf baten die israelitischen Männer Gideon: Herrsche über uns, du sowohl, als dein Sohn und deines Sohnes Sohn! denn du hast uns aus der Gewalt der Midianiter befreit.
And the men of Israel said unto Gid'on, Rule thou over us, both thou and thy son, and thy son's son also; for thou hast delivered us out of the hand of Midian.
23 Gideon aber erwiderte ihnen: Weder ich will über euch herrschen, noch soll mein Sohn über euch herrschen, Jahwe soll über euch herrschen!
And Gid'on said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you.
24 Da sprach Gideon zu ihnen: Ich will mir etwas von euch erbitten: Gebt mir ein jeder die Ringe, die er erbeutet hat! Sie trugen nämlich goldene Ringe, da sie Ismaeliter waren.
And Gid'on said unto them, I would ask one request of you, that ye should give me every man the earring of his booty; for they had had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.
25 Sie erwiderten: Die wollen wir dir gerne geben! Und sie breiteten einen Mantel aus, und jeder warf die von ihm erbeuteten Ringe darauf.
And they answered, We will willingly give. And they spread out a garment, and they cast therein every man the earring of his booty.
26 Es betrug aber das Gewicht der goldenen Ringe, die er sich erbat, 1700 Goldsekel, abgesehen von den Monden, den Ohrgehängen und den Purpurgewändern, die die midianitischen Könige trugen, sowie abgesehen von den Halsbändern an den Hälsen ihrer Kamele.
And the weight of the golden earrings that he had requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; besides the crescent ornaments, and ear-drops, and purple garments that were on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were about their camels' necks.
27 Gideon aber ließ daraus einen Ephod verfertigen und stellte ihn in seiner Vaterstadt Ophra auf, und ganz Israel trieb dort Abgötterei mit ihm, und er wurde für Gideon und seine Familie zum Fallstrick.
And Gid'on made thereof an ephod, and set it up in his city, in 'Ophrah: and all Israel went astray after it thither; and it became a snare unto Gid'on, and to his house.
28 So wurden die Midianiter vor den Israeliten gedemütigt, so daß sie das Haupt nicht wieder erhoben. Und das Land hatte vierzig Jahre lang Ruhe, so lange Gideon lebte.
And Midian was humbled before the children of Israel, so that they lifted not up their head any more. And the country was quiet forty years in the days of Gid'on.
29 Sodann ging Jerubbaal, der Sohn Joas', heim und blieb fortan in seinem Hause.
And Yerubba'al the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.
30 Gideon besaß siebzig leibliche Söhne, denn er hatte viele Weiber.
And Gid'on had seventy sons begotten of his body; for he had many wives.
31 Und sein Kebsweib, das er in Sichem hatte, gebar ihm gleichfalls einen Sohn, den benannte er Abimelech.
And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bore him a son, and he gave him the name, Abimelech.
32 Und Gideon, der Sohn Joas', starb in hohem Alter und wurde im Grabe seines Vaters Joas im Ophra der Abiesriten begraben.
And Gid'on the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in 'Ophrah of the Abi'ezrites.
33 Als aber Gideon tot war, trieben die Israeliten wieder Abgötterei mit den Baalen und nahmen sich den Bundesbaal zum Gotte.
And it came to pass, when Gid'on was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went astray after the Be'alim, and made themselves Ba'al-berith for a god.
34 Und die Israeliten gedachten nicht an Jahwe, ihren Gott, der sie aus der Gewalt aller ihrer Feinde ringsumher befreit hatte;
And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who delivered them out of the hand of all their enemies on every side.
35 auch übten sie keine Liebe gegen die Familie Jerubbaals, Gideons, die den Wohlthaten, die er Israel erwiesen, entsprochen hätte.
Neither showed they kindness to the house of Yerubba'al, namely, Gid'on, in accordance with all the good which he had done unto Israel.
