Richter 7
1 In der Frühe nun machte sich Jerubbaal, das ist Gideon, mit sämtlichen Leuten, die er bei sich hatte, auf, und sie lagerten sich bei der Quelle Harod. Das Lager der Midianiter aber befand sich nördlich von ihm, vom Hügel More an in der Ebene.
The next morning, Gideon and his men got up early and went as far as Harod Spring. The army of Midian was camped north of them, in the valley near Moreh Hill.
2 Jahwe aber sprach zu Gideon: Der Leute bei dir sind zu viel, als daß ich die Midianiter in ihre Gewalt geben sollte; sonst könnte sich Israel mir gegenüber brüsten und sagen: Meine Hand hat mir Rettung geschafft!
Yahweh said to Gideon, “You have too many soldiers with you. If I allow all of you to fight the army of Midian, [if your army defeats them], they will boast to me that they defeated their enemies by themselves, [without my help].
3 So rufe denn laut, daß die Leute es hören, aus: Wer Furcht empfindet und zaghaft ist, mag sich wenden und umkehren vom Gebirge Gilead! Da kehrten 22000 von den Leuten um, so daß nur noch 10000 übrig blieben.
So tell the men, ‘Whoever among you is timid or afraid may leave us and go home.’” So [after Gideon told that to them], 22,000 of them went home. Only 10,000 men were left there.
4 Da sprach Jahwe zu Gideon: Noch sind der Leute zu viel; führe sie hinab an das Wasser, daß ich sie dir dort sichte. Von wem ich dann zu dir sagen werde: dieser da soll dich begleiten! - der soll dich begleiten, aber jeder, von dem ich zu dir sagen werde: dieser da soll dich nicht begleiten! - der wird nicht mitgehen.
But Yahweh told Gideon, “There are still too many men! Take them down to the spring, and there I will choose from among them, which ones will go with you and which ones will not go.”.
5 Da führte er die Leute hinab ans Wasser. Und Jahwe sprach zu Gideon: Jeden, der mit der Zunge Wasser leckt, so wie die Hunde lecken, den stelle besonders und ebenso jeden, der niederkniet, um aus der Hand zu trinken, indem er sie zum Munde führt.
When Gideon took the men down to the spring, Yahweh told him, “When they drink, put into one group the ones who scoop the water into their hands, and then lap it up like dogs do. Put into another group the ones who kneel down [and bend over] and drink with their mouths in the water.”
6 Es belief sich aber die Zahl derer, die das Wasser leckten, auf 300 Mann; alle übrigen Leute hingegen waren niedergekniet, um Wasser zu trinken.
So when they drank, only 300 men drank from their hands. All the others drank with their mouths down in the water.
7 Da sprach Jahwe zu Gideon: Mit den 300 Mann, die das Wasser leckten, werde ich euch erretten und die Midianiter in deine Gewalt geben; alle übrigen Leute aber mögen ein jeder an seinen Ort gehen.
Then Yahweh told Gideon, “The 300 men who lapped the water from their hands will be your army! I will enable them to defeat the Midian army. Let all the others go home!”
8 Da nahmen sie den Mundvorrat der Leute, sowie ihre Posaunen an sich; alle israelitischen Männer aber entließ er, einen jeden in seine Heimat, und behielt nur die 300 Mann zurück. Und das Lager der Midianiter befand sich unter ihm in der Ebene.
So Gideon’s 300 men collected the food and rams’ horns from all the other men, and then he sent them home. The men of Midian were camping in the valley below Gideon.
9 In jener Nacht nun gebot ihm Jahwe: Auf, brich drunten ins Lager ein, denn ich habe es in deine Gewalt gegeben!
That night, Yahweh said to Gideon, “Get up and go down to their camp, [and you will hear something that will convince you that] I will enable your men to defeat them.
10 Fürchtest du dich aber, drunten einzubrechen, so begieb dich mit deinem Diener Pura hinunter an das Lager
But if you are afraid to attack them by yourself, take your servant Purah with you.
11 und belausche, was man dort spricht. Dann wirst du Mut gewinnen, in das Lager einzubrechen. Da begab er sich mit seinem Diener Pura hinunter bis in die nächste Nähe der Krieger im Lager.
Go down and listen to what some of the Midian soldiers are saying. Then you will be very encouraged, and you will be ready to attack their camp.” So Gideon took Purah with him, and they went down to the edge of the enemy camp.
12 Da hatten sich die Midianiter, Amalekiter und alle die aus dem Osten in der Ebene gelagert, so massenhaft, wie die Heuschrecken, und ihre Kamele waren zahllos, so massenhaft wie der Sand am Meeresufer.
The armies of the people of Midian and Amalek and from the east had set up their tents and looked like a swarm of locusts. It seemed that their camels were as impossible to count as the grains of sand on the seashore.
13 Als aber Gideon herankam, da erzählte eben einer einem andern einen Traum mit den Worten: Da hab' ich einen Traum gehabt, und zwar rollte da ein Gerstenbrot-Kuchen ins midianitische Lager, drang bis zum Häuptlingszelte vor, traf es, daß es umfiel, und drehte es nach oben um, daß das Zelt dalag.
Gideon crept closer and heard one man telling a friend about a dream. He said, “I just had a dream, and in the dream I saw a round loaf of barley bread tumble down into our Midian camp. It struck a tent so hard that the tent turned upside down and collapsed!”
14 Da antwortete der andere und sprach: Das ist nichts anderes, als das Schwert des Israeliten Gideon, des Sohnes Joas'. Gott hat die Midianiter und das ganze Lager in seine Gewalt gegeben!
His friend said, “Your dream can mean only one thing. It means that God will enable Gideon, the man of Israel, to defeat all of the armies that are here with us men from Midian.”
15 Als nun Gideon die Erzählung von dem Traum und seine Deutung vernommen hatte, warf er sich andächtig nieder, kehrte sodann zum israelitischen Lager zurück und rief: Auf! denn Jahwe hat das Lager der Midianiter in eure Gewalt gegeben.
When Gideon heard the [man tell about his] dream and the meaning of that dream, he thanked God. Then he [and Purah] returned to the Israeli camp, and he shouted to the men, “Get up! Because God is enabling you to defeat the men from Midian!”
16 Darauf teilte er die 300 Mann in drei Heerhaufen und gab ihnen insgesamt Posaunen und leere Krüge in die Hand; in den Krügen aber befanden sich Fackeln.
He divided his men into three groups. He gave each man a ram’s horn and an empty clay jar. He also gave each of them a torch [that they lit].
17 Dazu gebot er ihnen: Seht auf mich und thut ebenso! Wenn ich bis zum Rande des Lagers vorgedrungen sein werde, dann thut dasselbe, was ich thue.
Then he said to them, “Watch me. When we come close to the enemy camp, [spread out to surround the camp]. Then do exactly what I do.
18 Wenn ich also samt allen, die bei mir sind, in die Posaune stoße, so stoßt ihr ebenfalls in die Posaunen auf allen Seiten des Lagers und ruft: Schwert Jahwes und Gideons!
As soon as I and the men with me blow our ram’s horns, you men in the other two groups surrounding the camp blow your horns and shout, ‘[We are doing this] for Yahweh and for Gideon!’”
19 So drang Gideon mit 100 Mann, die er bei sich hatte, zu Anfang der mittleren Nachtwache bis zum Rande des Lagers vor; eben hatte man die Wachen aufgestellt. Da stießen sie in die Posaunen und zerschmetterten die Krüge in ihrer Hand,
A while before midnight, just after a new group of Israeli guards took the places of the previous group, Gideon and the 100 men with him arrived at the edge of the Midian camp. Suddenly they all blew their horns, and broke their jars.
20 und zwar stießen die drei Heerhaufen zugleich in die Posaunen, zerbrachen die Krüge, nahmen die Fackeln in die linke Hand und in die rechte die Posaunen zum Blasen und riefen aus: Schwert Jahwes und Gideons!
Then the men in all three groups blew their horns and smashed their jars. They held the torches high with their left hands, and held up the horns with their right hands and alternatively blew them and shouted, “[We have] swords [to fight] for Yahweh and for Gideon!”
21 Da blieb ein jeder auf seinem Platze stehen rings um das Lager her; im Lager aber rannte alles umher, dann flohen sie unter lautem Geschrei.
Each of Gideon’s men stood in his position around the enemy camp. As they watched, all the Midian men started running around and shouting in a panic.
22 Als sie aber in die dreihundert Posaunen stießen, richtete Jahwe ihre Schwerter überall im Lager gegen die eigenen Leute, und was im Lager war, floh bis Beth-Hasitta nach Zereda zu, bis an das Ufer von Abel-Mehola bei Tabbath.
While the 300 Israeli men kept blowing their horns, Yahweh caused their enemies to start fighting each other with their swords/daggers. Some of them killed each other. The rest fled. Some fled south to Beth-Shittah. Some fled to Zerarah [village], near Tabbath.
23 Sodann wurden die Israeliten aus Naphthali, aus Asser und aus ganz Manasse aufgeboten, und sie verfolgten die Midianiter.
Then Gideon sent messages to the soldiers in the areas where the descendants of Naphtali, Asher, and Manasseh lived, to tell them to come and pursue the army of Midian.
24 Auch hatte Gideon Boten auf das ganze Gebirge Ephraim gesandt mit der Aufforderung: zieht herab den Midianitern entgegen und schneidet ihnen das Wasser ab bis Beth-Bara und an den Jordan! Da wurden alle Ephraimiten aufgeboten und besetzten das Wasser bis Beth-Bara und an den Jordan.
He also sent messengers throughout the hilly area where the descendants of Ephraim lived, saying, “Come down to attack the army of Midian. Come down to the Jordan River, to the place where people can wade across, to prevent enemy troops from crossing it! Station men as far south as Beth-Barah.” So the men of Ephraim did what Gideon told them to do.
25 Auch nahmen sie die zwei Midianiterfürsten Oreb und Seeb gefangen und hieben Oreb beim Rabenfelsen nieder und Seeb hieben sie bei der Wolfskelter nieder. Dann verfolgten sie die Midianiter. Die Köpfe Orebs und Seebs aber brachten sie zu Gideon über den Jordan hinüber.
They also captured Oreb and Zeeb, the two generals of the Midian army. They killed Oreb at [the big rock which is now called] the rock of Oreb, and they killed Zeeb at [the place where people crush grapes that is now called] the winepress of Zeeb. Afterwards, the Israelis cut off the heads of Oreb and Zeeb and brought them to Gideon, while he was near the Jordan River.
