Richter 11
1 Der Gileadit Jephtha war ein tapferer Held, aber er war der Sohn einer Buhlerin; Gilead hatte Jephtha gezeugt,
Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of a harlot; and Gilead begot Jephthah.
2 und als das Weib Gileads diesem Söhne gebar, und die Söhne des Weibes heranwuchsen, vertrieben sie Jephtha und sprachen zu ihm: Du darfst in unserer Familie nicht miterben, denn du bist der Sohn eines anderen Weibes!
And Gilead's wife bore him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said unto him: 'Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of another woman.'
3 So entwich Jephtha vor seinen Brüdern und nahm seinen Aufenthalt im Lande Tob. Da scharten sich um Jephtha nichtsnutzige Leute, die zogen mit ihm aus.
Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob; and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.
4 Nach einiger Zeit jedoch begannen die Ammoniter Krieg mit Israel.
And it came to pass after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.
5 Als aber die Ammoniter Krieg mit Israel begannen, machten sich die Vornehmsten Gileads auf den Weg, um Jephtha aus dem Lande Tob herbeizuholen.
And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob.
6 Sie sprachen zu Jephtha: Komm und werde unser Anführer, so wollen wir gegen die Ammoniter kämpfen!
And they said unto Jephthah: 'Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.'
7 Jephtha erwiderte den Vornehmen Gileads: Habt ihr nicht einen Haß auf mich geworfen und mich aus meiner Familie vertrieben? Warum kommt ihr nun zu mir, wo ihr in Not seid?
And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead: 'Did not ye hate me, and drive me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?'
8 Die Vornehmen Gileads entgegneten Jephtha: Ja, wir sind nun auf dich zurückgekommen, und gehst du mit uns und führst den Krieg gegen die Ammoniter, so sollst du uns als Haupt gelten - allen Einwohnern Gileads!
And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah: 'Therefore are we returned to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon, and thou shalt be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.'
9 Jephtha antwortete den Vornehmen Gileads: Wenn ihr mich zurückholt, um den Krieg gegen die Ammoniter zu führen, und Jahwe giebt sie vor mir preis, so will ich euer Haupt sein!
And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead: 'If ye bring me back home to fight with the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, I will be your head.'
10 Da sprachen die Vornehmen Gileads zu Jephtha: Jahwe wolle die Verabredung unter uns hören! Wahrlich, wie du gesagt hast, so wollen wir thun!
And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah: 'The LORD shall be witness between us; surely according to thy word so will we do.'
11 Darauf folgte Jephtha den Vornehmen Gileads, und das Volk bestellte ihn zum Haupt und zum Anführer über sich, und Jephtha trug Jahwe in Mizpa alle seine Anliegen vor.
Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD in Mizpah.
12 Hierauf schickte Jephtha Gesandte an den König der Ammoniter mit der Botschaft: Was willst du von mir, daß du gegen mich herangezogen bist, um mein Land mit Krieg zu überziehen?
And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying: 'What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?'
13 Der König der Ammoniter erwiderte den Gesandten Jephthas: Israel hat mir, als es aus Ägypten herzog, mein Land weggenommen, vom Arnon bis zum Jabok und bis zum Jordan: so gieb sie nun im Guten wieder zurück!
And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah: 'Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan; now therefore restore those cities peaceably.'
14 Da schickte Jephtha nochmals Gesandte an den König der Ammoniter
And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon;
15 und ließ ihm sagen: So spricht Jephtha: Israel hat den Moabitern und Ammonitern ihr Land nicht weggenommen,
and he said unto him: 'Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon.
16 sondern als sie aus Ägypten herzogen und Israel in der Steppe bis zum Schilfmeere gekommen und nach Kades gelangt war,
But when they came up from Egypt, and Israel walked through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;
17 schickte Israel Gesandte an den König von Edom mit der Bitte: Laß mich doch durch dein Land ziehen! Aber der König von Edom willfahrte nicht. Ebenso sandte es an den König von Moab; er aber wollte nicht. Da blieb Israel in Kades,
then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying: Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Moab; but he would not; and Israel abode in Kadesh.
18 wanderte durch die Steppe, umging das Land Edom und das Land Moab und gelangte so in das Gebiet östlich vom Lande Moab. Und sie lagerten sich jenseits des Arnon und betraten das Gebiet Moabs nicht, denn der Arnon bildet die Grenze Moabs.
Then he walked through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they pitched on the other side of the Arnon; but they came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.
19 Hierauf schickte Israel Gesandte an den Amoriterkönig Sihon, den König von Hesbon. Und Israel ließ ihm sagen: Laß uns doch durch dein Land an meinen Ort ziehen!
And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him: Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.
20 Aber Sihon traute Israel nicht, daß er es hätte sein Gebiet durchziehen lassen. Vielmehr zog Sihon all' sein Kriegsvolk zusammen; die lagerten sich bei Jahza, und er griff Israel an.
But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
21 Allein Jahwe, der Gott Israels, gab Sihon und sein gesamtes Volk in die Gewalt der Israeliten, daß sie sie besiegten, und Israel das ganze Land der Amoriter, die dieses Land bewohnten, eroberte.
And the LORD, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them; so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
22 So eroberten sie das ganze Gebiet der Amoriter vom Arnon bis zum Jabok und von der Steppe bis zum Jordan.
And they possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.
23 Nun denn! Jahwe, der Gott Israels, hat die Amoriter vor seinem Volke Israel vertrieben, und du willst in ihren Besitz eintreten?
So now the LORD, the God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites from before His people Israel, and shouldest thou possess them?
24 Nicht wahr, wen dir dein Gott Kamos zuweist, dessen Land nimmst du in Besitz? Und wen immer Jahwe, unser Gott, vor uns vertrieben hat, in dessen Besitz treten wir ein!
Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God hath dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.
25 Und nun, bist du etwa so viel besser, als Balak, der Sohn Zipors, der König von Moab? Hat er etwa mit Israel gerechtet oder hat er etwa gegen sie gekämpft?
And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?
26 Während Israel in Hesbon und den zugehörigen Ortschaften, in Aror und den zugehörigen Ortschaften und in allen den Städten, die auf beiden Seiten des Arnon liegen, 300 Jahre lang ansässig war - warum habt ihr sie denn in dieser Zeit nicht an euch gerissen?
While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; wherefore did ye not recover them within that time?
27 Ich habe dir nichts zuleide gethan, aber du thust Unrecht an mir, indem du mich angreifst: Jahwe, der Richter, richte heute zwischen den Israeliten und den Ammonitern!
I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me; the LORD, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.'
28 Aber der König der Ammoniter hörte nicht auf die Worte, die ihm Jephtha entbot.
Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
29 Da kam über Jephtha der Geist Jahwes, und er zog nach Gilead und Manasse und zog nach Mizpe in Gilead und von Mizpe in Gilead zog er hin gegen die Ammoniter.
Then the spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
30 Und Jephtha gelobte Jahwe ein Gelübde und sprach: Wenn du in der That die Ammoniter in meine Gewalt giebst,
And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said: 'If Thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,
31 so soll, wer immer aus der Thüre meines Hauses heraus mir entgegenkommt, wenn ich wohlbehalten von den Ammonitern zurückkehre, Jahwe angehören, und ich will ihn als Brandopfer darbringen.
then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be the LORD'S, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.'
32 Hierauf zog Jephtha gegen die Ammoniter, um ihnen eine Schlacht zu liefern, und Jahwe gab sie in seine Gewalt.
So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hand.
33 Er brachte ihnen eine gar gewaltige Niederlage bei, von Aror bis gegen Minnith hin, zwanzig Städte erobernd, und bis nach Abel Keramim. So wurden die Ammoniter vor den Israeliten gedemütigt.
And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abel-cheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
34 Als nun Jephtha nach Mizpa zu seinem Hause kam, trat eben seine Tochter heraus ihm entgegen mit Pauken und im Reigentanz. Sie war sein einziges Kind; außer ihr hatte er weder Sohn noch Tochter.
And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances; and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
35 Als er sie nun erblickte, zerriß er seine Kleider und rief: Ach, meine Tochter! Wie tief beugst du mich nieder: gerade du stürzest mich ins Unglück! Habe ich doch meinen Mund aufgethan Jahwe gegenüber und kann es nicht zurücknehmen!
And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said: 'Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art become my troubler; for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.'
36 Sie erwiderte ihm: Mein Vater, hast du deinen Mund aufgethan Jahwe gegenüber, so verfahre mit mir, wie es von dir ausgesprochen worden ist. Hat doch Jahwe bewirkt, daß du dich an deinen Feinden, den Ammonitern, rächen konntest!
And she said unto him: 'My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.'
37 Doch bat sie ihren Vater: Das möge mir gewährt sein: laß noch zwei Monate lang von mir ab, daß ich hingehe, hinab nach den Bergen, und mein Sterben im Jungfrauenalter beweine - ich und meine Gespielinnen.
And she said unto her father: 'Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.'
38 Er antwortete: Gehe hin! und ließ sie für zwei Monate ziehen. Da ging sie mit ihren Gespielinnen hin und beweinte auf den Bergen ihr Sterben im Jungfrauenalter.
And he said: 'Go.' And he sent her away for two months; and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.
39 Aber nach Verlauf von zwei Monaten kehrte sie zu ihrem Vater zurück, und er vollzog an ihr das Gelübde, das er gelobt hatte. Sie hatte aber nie mit einem Manne zu thun gehabt. Und es ward zur Sitte in Israel:
And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed; and she had not known man. And it was a custom in Israel,
40 Von Jahr zu Jahr gehen die Töchter Israels hin, die Tochter des Gileaditers Jephtha zu besingen, jedes Jahr vier Tage lang.
that the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
