Job 1
1 Es war ein Mann im Lande Uz mit Namen Hiob; der war unsträflich und rechtschaffen, gottesfürchtig und dem Bösen feind.
There has been a man in the land of Uz—his name Job—and that man has been perfect and upright—both fearing God, and turning aside from evil.
2 Und es wurden ihm sieben Söhne und drei Töchter geboren,
And seven sons and three daughters are borne to him,
3 und sein Besitz bestand in 7000 Schafen, 3000 Kamelen, 500 Joch Rindern, 500 Eselinnen und einem sehr zahlreichen Gesinde; so überragte dieser Mann alle Bewohner des Ostens.
and his substance is seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred pairs of oxen, and five hundred female donkeys, and a very abundant service; and that man is greater than any of the sons of the east.
4 Seine Söhne aber pflegten hinzugehen und der Reihe nach im Hause eines jeden ein Mahl zu veranstalten; sie ließen dann jedesmal auch ihre drei Schwestern einladen, mit ihnen zu essen und zu trinken.
And his sons have gone and made a banquet—the house of each [in] his day—and have sent and called to their three sisters to eat and to drink with them;
5 Wenn nun diese Gelage reihum gegangen waren, ließ ihnen Hiob sagen, sie möchten sich weihen; dann machte er sich früh am Morgen auf und brachte für jedes von ihnen ein Brandopfer dar. Denn Hiob dachte: Vielleicht haben sich meine Kinder versündigt und sich in ihrem Herzen von Gott losgesagt! So that Hiob regelmäßig.
and it comes to pass, when they have gone around the days of the banquet, that Job sends and sanctifies them, and has risen early in the morning, and caused burnt-offerings to ascend—the number of them all—for Job said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned, yet blessed God in their heart.” Thus Job does all the days.
6 Nun geschah es eines Tags, daß die Gottessöhne kamen, sich vor Jahwe zu stellen, und auch der Satan kam unter ihnen.
And the day is, that sons of God come to station themselves by YHWH, and there also comes Satan in their midst.
7 Dann fragte Jahwe den Satan: Wo kommst du her? Der Satan antwortete Jahwe und sprach: Von einem Streifzug auf der Erde und vom Umherwandeln auf ihr!
And YHWH says to Satan, “Where do you come from?” And Satan answers YHWH and says, “From going to and fro in the land, and from walking up and down on it.”
8 Dann sprach Jahwe zum Satan: Hast du wohl acht gehabt auf meinen Knecht Hiob? Denn seinesgleichen giebt es niemand auf Erden, so unsträflich und rechtschaffen, gottesfürchtig und dem Bösen feind!
And YHWH says to Satan, “Have you set your heart against My servant Job because there is none like him in the land, a man perfect and upright, fearing God, and turning aside from evil?”
9 Der Satan erwiderte Jahwe und sprach: Ist Hiob etwa umsonst gottesfürchtig? Hast nicht du selbst ihn und sein Haus und alles, was ihm gehört, rings umhegt?
And Satan answers YHWH and says, “Is Job fearing God for nothing?
10 Seiner Hände Arbeit hast du gesegnet und seine Herden breiteten sich im Lande aus.
Have You not made a hedge for him, and for his house, and for all that he has—all around?
11 Aber recke nur einmal deine Hand aus und taste an alles, was ihm gehört, so wird er sich sicherlich offen von dir lossagen!
You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance has spread in the land, and yet, put forth Your hand now, and strike against anything that he has—if not, he blesses You to Your face!”
12 Dann sprach Jahwe zum Satan: Wohlan, alles, was ihm gehört, sei in deiner Gewalt, nur ihn selbst rühre nicht an! Und der Satan ging von Jahwe hinweg.
And YHWH says to Satan, “Behold, all that he has [is] in your hand, only do not put forth your hand to him.” And Satan goes out from the presence of YHWH.
13 Eines Tages nun, als die Söhne und Töchter Hiobs eben im Hause ihres ältesten Bruders schmausten und Wein tranken,
And the day is, that his sons and his daughters are eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn.
14 kam ein Bote zu Hiob mit der Meldung: Die Rinder waren am Pflügen und die Eselinnen weideten daneben,
And a messenger has come to Job and says, “The oxen have been plowing, and the female donkeys feeding by their sides,
15 da machten die Sabäer einen Überfall und raubten sie; die Knechte aber erschlugen sie mit dem Schwert, und nur ich allein bin entronnen, dir's zu melden.
and Sheba falls, and takes them, and they have struck the young men by the mouth of the sword, and I have escaped—only I alone—to declare [it] to you.”
16 Noch redete dieser, da kam ein anderer und sprach: Feuer Gottes fiel vom Himmel herab und fuhr zündend unter die Schafe und die Knechte und verzehrte sie, und nur ich allein bin entronnen, dir's zu melden.
While this [one] is speaking another has also come and says, “Fire of God has fallen from the heavens, and burns among the flock, and among the young men, and consumes them, and I have escaped—only I alone—to declare [it] to you.”
17 Noch redete dieser, da kam ein anderer und sprach: Die Chaldäer stellten drei Heerhaufen auf, fielen über die Kamele her und raubten sie; die Knechte aber erschlugen sie mit dem Schwert, und nur ich allein bin entronnen, dir's zu melden.
While this [one] is speaking another also has come and says, “Chaldeans made three heads, and rush on the camels, and take them, and they have struck the young men by the mouth of the sword, and I have escaped—only I alone—to declare [it] to you.”
18 Noch redete dieser, da kam ein anderer und sprach: deine Söhne und Töchter schmausten und tranken Wein im Hause ihres ältesten Bruders,
While this [one] is speaking another has also come and says, “Your sons and your daughters are eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their brother, the firstborn.
19 da kam plötzlich ein gewaltiger Sturmwind über die Wüste herüber und erfaßte das Haus an seinen vier Ecken, daß es auf die jungen Leute stürzte, und diese ums Leben kamen; nur ich allein bin entronnen, dir's zu melden.
And behold, a great wind has come from over the wilderness, and strikes against the four corners of the house, and it falls on the young men, and they are dead, and I have escaped—only I alone—to declare [it] to you.”
20 Dann stand Hiob auf, zerriß sein Gewand und beschor sein Haupt; sodann fiel er nieder auf die Erde, betete an
And Job rises, and tears his robe, and shaves his head, and falls to the earth, and pays respect,
21 und sprach: Nackt ging ich hervor aus meiner Mutter Schoß und nackt werde ich dorthin zurückkehren: Jahwe hat's gegeben und Jahwe hat's genommen - der Name Jahwes sei gepriesen!
and he says, “I came forth naked from the womb of my mother, And naked I return there. YHWH has given and YHWH has taken; Let the Name of YHWH be blessed.”
22 Bei alledem versündigte sich Hiob nicht und legte Gott nichts Thörichtes zur Last.
In all this Job has not sinned, nor given folly to God.
