Job 41
1 Kannst du das Krokodil mit der Angel ziehen und mit der Schnur seine Zunge niederdrücken?
Canst thou draw out leviathan with a fishhook? Or press down his tongue with a cord?
2 Ziehst du ihm eine Binsenschnur durch die Nase und durchbohrst du mit dem Haken seine Backe?
Canst thou put a rope into his nose? Or pierce his jaw through with a hook?
3 Wird es dir viel Flehens machen oder dir gute Worte geben?
Will he make many supplications unto thee? Or will he speak soft words unto thee?
4 Wird es einen Vertrag mit dir eingehen, daß du es für immer zum Sklaven nehmest?
Will he make a covenant with thee, That thou shouldest take him for a servant for ever?
5 Wirst du mit ihm spielen, wie mit einem Vöglein und kannst du es anbinden für deine Mädchen?
Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? Or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?
6 Feilschen darum die Zunftgenossen, verteilen es unter die Händler?
Will the bands [of fishermen] make traffic of him? Will they part him among the merchants?
7 Kannst du sein Haupt mit Stacheln spicken und seinen Kopf mit schwirrenden Harpunen?
Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons, Or his head with fish-spears?
8 Lege nur deine Hand an es - gedenke, welch' ein Kampf! du wirst's nicht wieder thun.
Lay thy hand upon him; Remember the battle, and do so no more.
9 Ja, seine Hoffnung ward betrogen; wird er doch schon bei seinem Anblick hingestreckt.
Behold, the hope of him is in vain: Will not one be cast down even at the sight of him?
10 So tollkühn ist keiner, daß er es reizen dürfte, - und wer ist, der mir sich stellen dürfte?
None is so fierce that he dare stir him up; Who then is he that can stand before me?
11 Wer hat mir etwas zuvor gethan, daß ich vergelten müßte? Was irgendwo unter dem Himmel ist, gehört mir!
Who hath first given unto me, that I should repay him? [Whatsoever is] under the whole heaven is mine.
12 Ich darf nicht schweigen von seinen Gliedern, noch von der Stärke und der Schönheit seines Baus.
I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, Nor his mighty strength, nor his goodly frame.
13 Wer hat je vorn sein Gewand aufgedeckt, und wer dringt in seines Gebisses Doppelreihen?
Who can strip off his outer garment? Who shall come within his jaws?
14 Wer hat je seines Rachens Doppelthor geöffnet? Um seine Zähne rings ist Schrecken!
Who can open the doors of his face? Round about his teeth is terror.
15 Ein Stolz sind die Rinnen der Schilde, mit festem Siegel verschlossen.
[His] strong scales are [his] pride, Shut up together [as with] a close seal.
16 Eins reiht sich an das andere, kein Lüftchen dringt zwischen sie ein.
One is so near to another, That no air can come between them.
17 Jedes hängt am andern fest; sie schließen sich zusammen unzertrennlich.
They are joined one to another; They stick together, so that they cannot be sundered.
18 Sein Niesen läßt Licht erglänzen, und seine Augen gleichen der Morgenröte Wimpern.
His sneezings flash forth light, And his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
19 Seinem Rachen entfahren Fackeln, entsprühen Feuerfunken.
Out of his mouth go burning torches, And sparks of fire leap forth.
20 Aus seinen Nüstern dringt Dampf hervor wie von einem siedenden Topf mit Binsenfeuerung.
Out of his nostrils a smoke goeth, As of a boiling pot and [burning] rushes.
21 Sein Odem entzündet Kohlen, und Flammen entfahren seinem Rachen.
His breath kindleth coals, And a flame goeth forth from his mouth.
22 Auf seinem Halse wohnt die Kraft, und vor ihm her tanzt Verzagen.
In his neck abideth strength, And terror danceth before him.
23 Die Wampen seines Leibes haften fest, ihm angegossen unbeweglich.
The flakes of his flesh are joined together: They are firm upon him; they cannot be moved.
24 Sein Herz ist fest gegossen wie Stein, ja fest gegossen, wie ein unterer Mühlstein.
His heart is as firm as a stone; Yea, firm as the nether millstone.
25 Wenn es auffährt, so fürchten sich Helden, geraten vor Schrecken in Verwirrung.
When he raiseth himself up, the mighty are afraid: By reason of consternation they are beside themselves.
26 Greift man es an mit dem Schwert - so hält das nicht Stand, nicht Lanze, Pfeil und Panzer.
If one lay at him with the sword, it cannot avail; Nor the spear, the dart, nor the pointed shaft.
27 Es achtet das Eisen für Stroh, für wurmstichig Holz das Erz.
He counteth iron as straw, [And] brass as rotten wood.
28 Der Sohn des Bogens verjagt es nicht, in Strohhalme verwandeln sich ihm Schleudersteine.
The arrow cannot make him flee: Sling-stones are turned with him into stubble.
29 Wie Strohhalme gelten ihm Keulen, und es lacht des Sausens der Lanze.
Clubs are counted as stubble: He laugheth at the rushing of the javelin.
30 Unten an ihm sind spitzeste Scherben; einen Dreschschlitten breitet es aus auf dem Schlamm.
His underparts are [like] sharp potsherds: He spreadeth [as it were] a threshing-wain upon the mire.
31 Es macht die Tiefe sieden wie einen Topf, macht das Wasser einem Salbenkessel gleich.
He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: He maketh the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 Hinter ihm leuchtet ein Pfad auf; man hält die Flut für Silberhaar.
He maketh a path to shine after him; One would think the deep to be hoary.
33 Nichts kommt ihm gleich auf Erden, ihm, das geschaffen ist, sich nie zu fürchten.
Upon earth there is not his like, That is made without fear.
34 Auf alles Hohe sieht es herab - ein König ist es über alle Stolzen!
He beholdeth everything that is high: He is king over all the sons of pride.
