Job 39
1 Weißt du die Zeit, da die Felsgemsen werfen? Beobachtest du der Hirschkühe Kreißen?
“Do you know the time when the mountain goats give birth? Do you watch when the doe bears fawns?
2 Zählst du die Monde, die sie trächtig gehen, und weißt du die Zeit, wann sie gebären?
Can you count the months that they fulfil? Or do you know the time when they give birth?
3 Sie kauern nieder, lassen ihre Jungen durchbrechen, werden rasch ihrer Wehen ledig.
They bow themselves. They bear their young. They end their labour pains.
4 Ihre Jungen erstarken, wachsen auf im Freien, laufen fort und kehren nicht wieder zurück.
Their young ones become strong. They grow up in the open field. They go out, and don’t return again.
5 Wer hat den Wildesel frei gelassen und wer des Wildfangs Bande gelöst,
“Who has set the wild donkey free? Or who has loosened the bonds of the swift donkey,
6 dem ich die Wüste zur Behausung gab und die Salzsteppe zur Wohnung?
whose home I have made the wilderness, and the salt land his dwelling place?
7 Er lacht des Getöses der Stadt; das Lärmen des Treibers hört er nicht.
He scorns the tumult of the city, neither does he hear the shouting of the driver.
8 Was er auf den Bergen erspäht, ist seine Weide, und allem Grünen spürt er nach.
The range of the mountains is his pasture. He searches after every green thing.
9 Wird dir der Wildochs willig dienen oder wird er an deiner Krippe übernachten?
“Will the wild ox be content to serve you? Or will he stay by your feeding trough?
10 Vermagst du den Wildochsen mit dem Leitseil an die Furche zu fesseln oder wird er dir folgend die Thalgründe ackern?
Can you hold the wild ox in the furrow with his harness? Or will he till the valleys after you?
11 Verlässest du dich auf ihn, weil seine Kraft so groß, und überlässest du ihm deinen Ernteertrag?
Will you trust him, because his strength is great? Or will you leave to him your labour?
12 Traust du ihm zu, daß er deine Saat einbringe und auf deine Tenne sammle?
Will you confide in him, that he will bring home your seed, and gather the grain of your threshing floor?
13 Der Straußenhenne Fittich schlägt lustig; ist's fromme Schwinge und Feder?
“The wings of the ostrich wave proudly, but are they the feathers and plumage of love?
14 Nein! sie überläßt der Erde ihre Eier und brütet sie am Boden aus
For she leaves her eggs on the earth, warms them in the dust,
15 und vergißt, daß ein Fuß sie zerdrücken und das Wild der Steppe sie zertreten kann.
and forgets that the foot may crush them, or that the wild animal may trample them.
16 Sie ist hart gegen ihre Jungen, als gehörten sie ihr nicht; ob umsonst ihre Mühe, das ängstigt sie nicht.
She deals harshly with her young ones, as if they were not hers. Though her labour is in vain, she is without fear,
17 Denn Gott hat ihr Klugheit versagt und keinen Anteil an Verstand gegeben.
because God has deprived her of wisdom, neither has he imparted to her understanding.
18 Zur Zeit, da sie sich emporpeitscht, verlacht sie das Roß und seinen Reiter.
When she lifts up herself on high, she scorns the horse and his rider.
19 Giebst du dem Rosse Heldenkraft? Bekleidest du seinen Hals mit flatternder Mähne?
“Have you given the horse might? Have you clothed his neck with a quivering mane?
20 Machst du es springen wie die Heuschrecke? Sein prächtiges Schnauben, wie furchtbar!
Have you made him to leap as a locust? The glory of his snorting is awesome.
21 Es scharrt im Thalgrund und freut sich der Kraft, zieht aus entgegen dem Harnisch.
He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength. He goes out to meet the armed men.
22 Es lacht der Furcht und erschrickt nicht und macht nicht kehrt vor dem Schwert.
He mocks at fear, and is not dismayed, neither does he turn back from the sword.
23 Auf ihm klirrt der Köcher, der blitzende Speer und die Lanze,
The quiver rattles against him, the flashing spear and the javelin.
24 Mit Toben und Ungestüm schlürft es den Boden und hält nicht Stand, wenn die Trompete tönt.
He eats up the ground with fierceness and rage, neither does he stand still at the sound of the trumpet.
25 So oft die Trompete tönt, ruft es: Hui! und wittert den Streit von ferne, der Anführer donnernden Ruf und das Schlachtgeschrei.
As often as the trumpet sounds he snorts, ‘Aha!’ He smells the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.
26 Hebt der Habicht kraft deiner Einsicht die Schwingen, breitet seine Fittiche aus nach Süden hin?
“Is it by your wisdom that the hawk soars, and stretches her wings towards the south?
27 Oder fliegt auf dein Geheiß der Adler so hoch und baut sein Nest in der Höhe?
Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up, and makes his nest on high?
28 Auf dem Felsen wohnt und horstet er, auf des Felsen Zacke und Hochwacht.
On the cliff he dwells and makes his home, on the point of the cliff and the stronghold.
29 Von dort erspäht er den Fraß; in weite Ferne blicken seine Augen.
From there he spies out the prey. His eyes see it afar off.
30 Und seine Jungen schlürfen Blut, und wo Erschlagene sind, da ist er.
His young ones also suck up blood. Where the slain are, there he is.”
