Job 38
1 Dann antwortete Jahwe Hiob aus dem Wettersturm und sprach:
Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:
2 Wer da verdunkelt Ratschluß mit Worten ohne Einsicht?
Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Auf, gürte deine Lenden wie ein Mann; so will ich dich fragen und du belehre mich!
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto Me.
4 Wo warst du, als ich die Erde gründete? Sag an, wenn du Einsicht besitzest?
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast the understanding.
5 Wer hat ihre Maße bestimmt - du weißt es ja! - oder wer hat über sie die Meßschnur gespannt?
Who determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Or who stretched the line upon it?
6 Worauf sind ihre Pfeiler eingesenkt, oder wer hat ihren Eckstein hingeworfen,
Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner-stone thereof,
7 unter dem Jubel der Morgensterne allzumal, als alle Gottessöhne jauchzten?
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8 Wer verwahrte hinter Thoren das Meer, als es hervorbrach, aus dem Mutterschoß hervorging,
Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, and issued out of the womb;
9 als ich Gewölk zu seinem Kleide machte und dichte Finsternis zu seinen Windeln?
When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
10 als ich ihm seine Grenze ausbrach und Riegel und Thore setzte
And prescribed for it My decree, and set bars and doors,
11 und sprach: “Bis hierher sollst du kommen und nicht weiter und hier soll sich brechen deiner Wogen Übermut!”
And said: 'Thus far shalt thou come, but no further; and here shall thy proud waves be stayed'?
12 Hast du je in deinem Leben dem Morgen geboten, dem Frührot seine Stätte angewiesen,
Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days began, and caused the dayspring to know its place;
13 die Säume der Erde zu fassen, daß die Frevler von ihr abgeschüttelt werden?
That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it?
14 Sie verwandelt sich wie Thon unter dem Siegel; sie stellen sich dar wie ein Gewand.
It is changed as clay under the seal; and they stand as a garment.
15 Und den Frevlern wird ihr Licht entzogen, und der schon erhobene Arm wird zerschmettert.
But from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm is broken.
16 Bist du zu des Meeres Strudeln gelangt und bist du auf dem Grund der Tiefe gewandelt?
Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? Or hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep?
17 Haben sich dir des Todes Thore aufgethan, und schautest du die Thore des tiefen Dunkels?
Have the gates of death been revealed unto thee? Or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?
18 Hast du der Erde Breiten überschaut? Sag an, wenn du das alles weißt!
Hast thou surveyed unto the breadths of the earth? Declare, if thou knowest it all.
19 Wo hoch ist der Weg dahin, wo das Licht wohnt, und die Finsternis, - wo ist doch ihre Stätte,
Where is the way to the dwelling of light, and as for darkness, where is the place thereof;
20 daß du sie in ihr Gehege brächtest und die Pfade zu ihrem Hause kenntest?
That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
21 Du weißt es, denn damals wurdest du geboren, und deiner Tage Zahl ist groß!
Thou knowest it, for thou wast then born, and the number of thy days is great!
22 Bist du zu den Speichern des Schnees gelangt und hast du die Speicher des Hagels erschaut,
Hast thou entered the treasuries of the snow, or hast thou seen the treasuries of the hail,
23 den ich aufgespart habe für die Drangsalszeit, für den Tag der Schlacht und des Kriegs?
Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
24 Wo doch ist der Weg dahin, wo das Licht sich teilt, der Ost sich über die Erde verbreitet?
By what way is the light parted, or the east wind scattered upon the earth?
25 Wer hat dem Regen Kanäle gespalten und einen Weg dem Wetterstrahl,
Who hath cleft a channel for the waterflood, or a way for the lightning of the thunder;
26 um es regnen zu lassen auf menschenleeres Land, auf die Wüste, in der niemand wohnt,
To cause it to rain on a land where no man is, on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
27 um Öde und Wildnis zu sättigen und frischen Graswuchs sprießen zu lassen?
To satisfy the desolate and waste ground, and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
28 Hat der Regen einen Vater, oder wer hat die Tautropfen gezeugt?
Hath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of dew?
29 Aus wessen Schoße ging das Eis hervor, und des Himmels Reif, wer hat ihn geboren?
Out of whose womb came the ice? And the hoar-frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
30 Wie Stein verdichten sich die Wasser, und die Fläche der Flut hält fest zusammen.
The waters are congealed like stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
31 Vermagst du die Bande der Plejaden zu knüpfen oder die Fesseln des Orions zu lösen?
Canst thou bind the chains of the Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
32 Führst du die Tierkreisbilder heraus zu ihrer Zeit und leitest du den Bär samt seinen Jungen?
Canst thou lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season? Or canst thou guide the Bear with her sons?
33 Kennst du die Gesetze des Himmels oder bestimmst du seine Herrschaft über die Erde?
Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens? Canst thou establish the dominion thereof in the earth?
34 Erhebst du zur Wolke deine Stimme, daß Schwall von Wassern dich bedecke?
Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
35 Entsendest du Blitze, daß sie hinfahren und zu dir sagen: Hier sind wir?
Canst thou send forth lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee: 'Here we are'?
36 Wer hat ins Wolkendunkel Weisheit gelegt oder wer verlieh dem Luftgebilde Verstand?
Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who hath given understanding to the mind?
37 Wer zählt die Wolken mit Weisheit ab, und die Krüge des Himmels - wer legt sie um,
Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven,
38 wenn das Erdreich zu Gußwerk zusammenfließt, und die Schollen aneinander kleben?
When the dust runneth into a mass, and the clods cleave fast together?
39 Erjagst du für die Löwin Beute und stillst du die Gier der jungen Löwen,
Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lioness? Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
40 wenn sie sich in den Lagerstätten ducken, im Dickicht auf der Lauer liegen?
When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?
41 Wer bereitet dem Raben seine Zehrung, wenn seine Jungen zu Gott schreien, umherirren ohne Nahrung?
Who provideth for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry unto God, and wander for lack of food?
