Job 31
1 Strenge Vorschrift gab ich meinen Augen, und wie hätte ich auf eine Jungfrau lüstern blicken sollen!
I made a covenant with mine eyes, and I will not think upon a virgin.
2 Was wäre da die Zuteilung von Gotte droben und das Verhängnis des Allmächtigen in Himmelshöhen?
Now what portion has God given from above? and is there an inheritance [given] of the Mighty One from the highest?
3 Ist es nicht Verderben für den Frevler und Unglück für die Übelthäter?
Alas! destruction to the unrighteous, and rejection to them that do iniquity.
4 Sieht er nicht meine Wege und zählt alle meine Schritte?
Will he not see my way, and number all my steps?
5 Wenn ich mit Lüge umging, und mein Fuß dem Truge nachjagte, -
But if I had gone with scorners, and if too my foot has hasted to deceit:
6 es wäge mich Gott mit rechter Wage, daß er meine Unschuld erkenne! -
(for I am weighed in a just balance, and the Lord knows my innocence: )
7 wenn mein Schritt vom rechten Weg abwich, wenn mein Herz meinen Augen nachging, und an meinen Händen ein Makel klebte,
if my foot has turned aside out of the way, or if mine heart has followed mine eye, and if too I have touched gifts with my hands;
8 so will ich säen und ein andrer möge essen, und meine Schößlinge mögen ausgerissen werden.
then let me sow, and let others eat; and let me be uprooted on the earth.
9 Wenn sich mein Herz wegen eines Weibes bethören ließ, und ich an der Thüre meines Nächsten lauerte,
If my heart has gone forth after another man's wife, and if I laid wait at her doors;
10 so möge mein Weib einem anderen mahlen, und andere mögen sich über sie strecken.
then let my wife also please another, and let my children be brought low.
11 Denn eine Schandthat wäre das, ein Vergehen, vom Richter zu strafen,
For the rage of anger is not to be controlled, [in the case] of defiling [another] man's wife.
12 ja, ein Feuer, das bis zum Abgrund fräße und alle meine Habe entwurzeln müßte.
For it is a fire burning on every side, and whoever it attacks, it utterly destroys.
13 Wenn ich das Recht meines Knechtes verachtete und das meiner Magd, wenn wir im Streite waren -
And if too I despised the judgement of my servant or [my] handmaid, when they pleaded with me;
14 was wollte ich auch thun, wenn Gott sich erhöbe, und wenn er untersuchte, was ihm erwidern?
what then shall I do if the Lord should try me? and if also he should at all visit me, can I make an answer?
15 Hat nicht, der mich erschuf, im Mutterleib auch ihn geschaffen, und hat nicht Einer uns im Mutterschoß bereitet? -
Were not they too formed as I also was formed in the womb? yes, we were formed in the same womb.
16 Wenn ich Geringen einen Wunsch versagte und die Augen der Witwe verschmachten ließ,
But the helpless missed not whatever need they had, and I did not cause the eye of the widow to fail.
17 wenn ich meinen Bissen allein verzehrte, und die Waise nicht ihr Teil davon genoß -
And if too I ate my morsel alone, and did not impart [of it] to the orphan;
18 nein, seit meiner Jugend wuchs sie mir auf wie einem Vater, von Mutterleib an leitete ich sie -
(for I nourished [them] as a father from my youth and guided [them] from my mother's womb.)
19 wenn ich einen Verkommenden sah ohne Gewand und ohne Decke einen Armen,
And if too I overlooked the naked as he was perishing, and did not clothe him;
20 wenn meine Hüften mich nicht gesegnet haben, und er sich nicht erwärmte von meiner Lämmer Schur. -
and if the poor did not bless me, and their shoulders were [not] warmed with the fleece of my lambs;
21 Wenn ich gegen eine Waise meine Faust geschwungen, weil ich im Thore Beistand für mich sah,
if I lifted my hand against an orphan, trusting that my strength was far superior [to his]:
22 so möge meine Achsel aus ihrer Schulter fallen, und mein Arm mir aus seiner Röhre gebrochen werden.
let them my shoulder start from the blade-bone, and my arm be crushed off from the elbow.
23 Denn furchtbar war mir das von Gott verhängte Verderben, und ohnmächtig bin ich vor seiner Majestät.
For the fear of the Lord constrained me, and I can’t bear up by reason of his burden.
24 Wenn ich Gold zu meinem Hort gemacht und Feingold meinen Trost genannt habe,
If I made gold my treasure, and if too I trusted the precious stone;
25 wenn ich mich freute, daß mein Schatz so groß, und daß meine Hand so viel erworben -
and if too I rejoiced when my wealth was abundant, and if too I laid my hand on innumerable [treasures]:
26 Wenn ich das Sonnenlicht betrachtete, wie es strahlte, und den Mond, wie er so prächtig dahinwallte,
(do we not see the shining sun eclipsed, and the moon waning? for they have not [power to continue]: )
27 und mein Herz sich insgeheim bethören ließ, und meine Hand sich zum Kuß an meinen Mund legte -
and if my heart was secretly deceived, and if I have laid my hand upon my mouth and kissed it:
28 auch das wäre ein Vergehen, vom Richter zu strafen, weil ich Gotte droben geheuchelt hätte -
let this also then be reckoned to me as the greatest iniquity: for I [should] have lied against the Lord Most High.
29 Wenn ich mich freute über das Unglück meines Feindes und frolockte, wenn ihn Unheil traf, -
And if too I was glad at the fall of mine enemies, and mine heart said, Aha!
30 aber nie habe ich meinem Munde gestattet, zu sündigen, indem ich ihm fluchend den Tod anwünschte -
let then mine ear hear my curse, and let me be a byword amongst my people in my affliction.
31 Wenn meine Hausgenossen nicht sagen mußten: “Wann wäre jemand von seinem Fleische nicht satt geworden!”
And if too my handmaids have often said, Oh that we might be satisfied with his flesh; (whereas I was very kind:
32 Der Fremdling durfte nicht im Freien übernachten, meine Thüren öffnete ich dem Wanderer -
for the stranger did not lodge without, and my door was opened to every one that came: )
33 Wenn ich, wie Menschen thun, meine Sünden verheimlichte, indem ich meine Schuld in meinem Busen verbarg,
or if too having sinned unintentionally, I hid my sin;
34 weil ich mich scheute vor der großen Menge, und die Verachtung der Geschlechter mich schreckte, so daß ich mich still verhielt, nicht aus der Thüre ging -
(for I did not stand in awe of a great multitude, so as not to declare boldly before them: ) and if too I permitted a poor man to go out of my door with an empty bosom:
35 O wäre doch, der mich anhören wollte! Hier meine Unterschrift - der Allmächtige antworte mir! Und hätte ich doch die KLageschrift, die mein Gegner schrieb!
(Oh that I had a hearer, ) and if I had not feared the hand of the Lord; and [as to] the written charge which I had against any one,
36 Fürwahr, ich wollte sie auf meine Schulter heben, als Diadem mir um die Schläfe winden;
I would place [it] as a chaplet on my shoulders, and read it.
37 ich wollte ihm jeden meiner Schritte künden und wie ein Fürst ihm entgegen treten! Hier enden die Reden Hiobs.
And if I did not read it and return it, having taken nothing from the debtor:
38 Wenn über mich mein Acker schrie, und insgesamt seine Furchen weinten;
If at any time the land groaned against me, and if its furrows mourned together;
39 wenn ich seinen Ertrag ohne Entgelt verzehrte und seinem Besitzer das Leben ausblies -
and if I ate its strength alone without price, and if I too grieved the heart of the owner of the soil, by taking [anything] from [him]:
40 so sollen statt Weizen Dornen aufgehen und statt der Gerste Unkraut.
then let the nettle come up to me instead of wheat, and a bramble instead of barley. And Job ceased speaking.
