Jesaja 64

1 Ach, daß du doch den Himmel zerrissest, herniederstiegst, daß Berge vor dir in Schwanken gerieten!

OH that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,

2 - so wie Feuer Reisig anzündet, Feuer das Wasser in Wallung bringt, - um deinen Widersachern deinen Namen kund zu machen, daß vor dir die Völker erbeben müßten,

As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence!

3 wenn du furchtbare Thaten ausführtest, die wir nicht erhoffen konnten! Du stiegst hernieder; Berge gerieten vor dir in Schwanken!

When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence.

4 Hat man doch von alters her nicht gehört, noch erhorcht, noch hat je ein Auge gesehen einen Gott außer dir, der thätig wäre für den, der auf ihn harrt!

For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.

5 Du kamst entgegen dem, der sich freute, Gerechtigkeit zu üben:

Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou art wroth; for we have sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved.

6 Und so wurden wir allesamt wie ein Unreiner, und alle unsere Tugenden wie ein von Blutfluß besudeltes Kleid. Insgesamt welkten wir dahin wie ein Blatt, und unsere Verschuldungen führten uns fort wie der Wind.

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

7 Da war niemand mehr, der deinen Namen anrief, der sich aufraffte, an dir festzuhalten; denn du hattest dein Angesicht vor uns verborgen und überliefertest uns in die Gewalt unserer Verschuldungen.

And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.

8 Nun aber, Jahwe, du bist ja unser Vater: wir sind der Thon und du unser Bildner, und das Werk deiner Hand sind wir alle!

But now, O Lord, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

9 Zürne, Jahwe, nicht gar zu sehr und gedenke nicht für immer der Verschuldung! Ach, blicke doch her: Dein Volk sind wir alle!

Be not wroth very sore, O Lord, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people.

10 Deine heiligen Städte sind zur Wüste geworden: Zion ist zur Wüste geworden, Jerusalem zur Einöde.

Thy holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.

11 Unser heiliger und herrlicher Tempel, in welchem unsere Väter dich lobpriesen, ist in Flammen aufgegangen, und alles, was uns köstlich war, ist ein Trümmerhaufe geworden.

Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste.

12 Kannst du darob dennoch an dich halten, Jahwe, in Schweigen verharren und ganz und gar uns niederbeugen?

Wilt thou refrain thyself for these things, O Lord? wilt thou hold thy peace, and afflict us very sore?
