Prediger 10
1 Giftige Fliegen machen stinkend, gährend das Öl des Salbenhändlers; gewichtiger als Weisheit, als Ehre ist ein wenig Thorheit.
Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: [so doth] a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom [and] honour.
2 Der Verstand des Weisen ist zu seiner Rechten, aber der Verstand des Thoren zu seiner Linken.
A wise man’s heart [is] at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left.
3 Auch auf dem Wege, wenn ein Narr da geht, fehlt im der Verstand, und er sagt zu allen, er sei ein Narr.
Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth [him], and he saith to every one [that] he [is] a fool.
4 Wenn sich des Herrschers Zorn gegen dich erhebt, so verlaß deinen Posten nicht, denn Gelassenheit schlägt große Sünden nieder.
If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.
5 Es giebt ein Übel, das ich sah unter der Sonne, gleich einem Versehen, welches vom Machthaber ausgeht:
There is an evil [which] I have seen under the sun, as an error [which] proceedeth from the ruler:
6 die Narrheit wird auf große Höhen gestellt, und Reiche müssen in Niedrigkeit sitzen.
Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
7 Ich sah Sklaven auf Rossen, und Fürsten wie Sklaven zu Fuße gehen.
I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
8 Wer eine Grube gräbt, kann darein fallen; und wer Gemäuer einreißt, den kann eine Schlange beißen.
He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
9 Wer Steine losbricht, kann sich an ihnen wehe thun; wer Holz spaltet, kann sich dadurch gefährden.
Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; [and] he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.
10 Wenn das Eisen stumpf geworden ist, und er die Vorderseite nicht geschärft hat, so muß er die Kräfte anstrengen; aber der Vorteil der Zurechtmachung ist eine Frucht der Weisheit.
If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom [is] profitable to direct.
11 Wenn die Schlange beißt ohne Beschwörung, so hat der Beschwörer keinen Vorteil.
Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.
12 Worte aus dem Mund eines Weisen sind lieblich; aber die Lippen des Thoren verderben ihn.
The words of a wise man’s mouth [are] gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
13 Der Anfang der Worte seines Mundes ist Thorheit, und das Ende seiner Rede ist schlimme Tollheit.
The beginning of the words of his mouth [is] foolishness: and the end of his talk [is] mischievous madness.
14 Und der Narr macht viele Worte; doch weiß der Mensch nicht, was sein wird, und was nach ihm sein wird, wer kann's ihm verraten?
A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
15 Die Mühsal der Thoren ermüdet ihn, der nicht weiß, zur Stadt zu gehen.
The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
16 Wehe dir, Land, dessen König ein Knabe ist, und dessen Fürsten am Morgen schmausen!
Woe to thee, O land, when thy king [is] a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
17 Heil dir, Land, dessen König ein Edler ist, und dessen Fürsten zu rechter Zeit speisen, in Mannhaftigkeit und nicht in Völlerei!
Blessed [art] thou, O land, when thy king [is] the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
18 Durch Faulheit senkt sich das Gebälk, und durch Schlaffheit der Hände träufelt das Haus.
By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.
19 Zur Belustigung veranstaltet man Mahlzeiten, und Wein erfreut das Leben, und das Geld gewährt alles.
A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all [things].
20 Auch in deinen Gedanken fluche nicht dem König und in deinen Schlafgemächern fluche nicht einem Reichen; denn die Vögel unter dem Himmel möchten den Laut entführen, und die Geflügelten das Wort verraten.
Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
