1 Benhadad aber, der König von Aram, zog seine ganze Heeresmacht zusammen: zweiunddreißig Könige waren mit ihm samt Rossen und Wagen; und er zog heran, schloß die Stadt Samaria ein und bestürmte sie.
And Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and warred against it.
2 Und er sandte Boten in die Stadt zu Ahab, dem Könige von Israel,
And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Ben-hadad,
3 und ließ ihm sagen: So spricht Benhadad: Dein Silber und dein Gold ist mein, und deine schönsten Weiber und Kinder sind gleichfalls mein!
Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine.
4 Da ließ ihm der König von Israel antworten: Wie du befiehlst, mein Herr König! Dein bin ich mit allem, was ich habe!
And the king of Israel answered and said, My master, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.
5 Die Boten kamen jedoch nochmals wieder und sprachen: So spricht Benhadad: Ich habe dir keineswegs entbieten lassen: Dein Silber und dein Gold, deine Weiber und deine Kinder sollst du mir geben!
And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Ben-hadad, saying, Although I have sent unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;
6 Vielmehr will ich morgen um diese Zeit meine Leute zu dir senden, daß sie dein Haus und die Häuser deiner Unterthanen durchsuchen und alles, was ihnen begehrenswert erscheint, sich aneignen und mitnehmen!
Yet I will send my servants unto thee to morrow about this time, and they shall search thine house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.
7 Da berief der König von Israel alle Vornehmen des Landes und sprach: Da seht ihr nun deutlich, wie böse er's vorhat! Denn als er zu mir sandte und meine Weiber und Kinder sowie mein Silber und Gold verlangte, da habe ich's ihm nicht verweigert!
Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.
8 Da antworteten ihm sämtliche Vornehme und das ganze Volk: Höre nicht darauf und willige nicht ein!
And all the elders and all the people said unto him, Hearken not unto him, nor consent.
9 Darauf sprach er zu den Boten Benhadads: Sagt meinem Herrn, dem König: Alles, was du zuerst deinem Knecht entboten hast, will ich thun; aber dies kann ich nicht thun! Hierauf gingen die Boten und brachten ihm Antwort.
Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Ben-hadad, Tell my master the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.
10 Da sandte Benhadad zu ihm und ließ ihm sagen: Mögen mir die Götter anthun, was sie wollen: der Schutt Samarias wird nicht hinreichen, allen den Kriegern, die ich anführe, die hohlen Hände zu füllen!
And Ben-hadad sent unto him, and said, The elohim do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.
11 Der König von Israel aber antwortete und sprach: Sagt ihm: Wer sich wappnet, soll sich nicht rühmen gleich dem, der die Rüstung ablegt.
And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his harness boast himself as he that putteth it off.
12 Als er nun diese Antwort vernahm, während er eben mit den Königen in den Laubhütten zechte, da befahl er seinen Leuten: Macht fertig! und sie machten die Sturmböcke fertig wider die Stadt.
And it came to pass, when Ben-hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants, Set yourselves in array. And they set themselves in array against the city.
13 Es trat aber ein Prophet zu Ahab, dem Könige von Israel, heran und sprach: So spricht Jahwe: Siehst du wohl diesen ganzen großen Haufen? Den will ich heute in deine Gewalt geben, damit du erkennest, daß ich Jahwe bin!
And, behold, there came a prophet unto Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith YHWH, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it in to thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am YHWH.
14 Ahab fragte: Durch wen? Da antwortete er: So spricht Jahwe: Durch die Leute der Landvögte! Da fragte er weiter: Wer soll den Kampf beginnen? Jener antwortete: Du selbst!
And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith YHWH, Even by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.
15 Da musterte er die Leute der Landvögte, und es waren ihrer zweihundertzweiunddreißig. Nach ihnen aber musterte er das ganze Volk, sämtliche Israeliten, siebentausend Mann.
Then he numbered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty two: and after them he numbered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.
16 Und sie rückten aus am Mittage, während sich Benhadad samt den zweiunddreißig Königen, die ihm zu Hilfe gekommen waren, in den Laubhütten trunken zechte.
And they went out at noon. But Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.
17 Die Leute der Landvögte aber rückten zuerst aus. Als nun Benhadad Leute auf Kundschaft ausschickte, meldeten ihm diese: Es sind Männer aus Samaria ausgerückt!
And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.
18 Da gebot er: Mögen sie nun in friedlicher Absicht oder Kampfes halber ausgerückt sein, greift sie auf jeden Fall lebendig!
And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive.
19 Sobald nun jene aus der Stadt ausgerückt waren - die Leute der Landvögte und das ihnen nachfolgende Heer -,
So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.
20 schlugen sie ein jeglicher seinen Mann. Und die Aramäer flohen, die Israeliten aber setzten ihnen nach. Und Benhadad, der König von Aram, entrann auf einem Rosse mit seinen Reitern.
And they slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Ben-hadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with the horsemen.
21 Der König von Israel aber rückte aus und erbeutete die Rosse und die Wagen. Und er brachte den Aramäern wiederholt eine große Niederlage bei.
And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.
22 Da trat der Prophet an den König von Israel heran und sprach zu ihm: Wohlan, halte dich wacker und sieh wohl zu, was du thun willst; denn im kommenden Jahre wird der König von Aram gegen dich heranziehen.
And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen thy self, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.
23 Die Diener des Königs von Aram aber sprachen zu diesem: Ein Berggott ist ihr Gott - darum haben sie uns überwunden! Aber könnten wir nur in der Ebene mit ihnen kämpfen, so wollten wir sie gewiß überwinden!
And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their elohim are elohim of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
24 Thue übrigens Folgendes: Laß die Könige sämtlich von ihrer Stelle abtreten und ersetze sie durch Statthalter.
And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:
25 Sodann bringe dir selbst ein Heer zusammen von gleicher Anzahl, wie jene, und laß uns in der Ebene mit ihnen kämpfen, so werden wir sie gewiß überwinden! Da gab er ihrem Rate Gehör und that also.
And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did so.
26 Im folgenden Jahre nun musterte Benhadad die Aramäer und zog heran nach Aphek zum Kampfe mit den Israeliten.
And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Ben-hadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.
27 Und die Israeliten wurden gemustert und mit Mundvorrat versorgt, und sie zogen ihnen entgegen. Die Israeliten aber lagerten ihnen gegenüber wie zwei Häuflein Ziegen, während die Aramäer das Land erfüllten.
And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.
28 Da trat der Gottesmann herzu und sprach zum Könige von Israel: So spricht Jahwe: Darum, weil die Aramäer gesagt haben, ein Berggott sei Jahwe und nicht ein Gott der Thalgründe, so will ich diesen ganzen großen Haufen in deine Gewalt geben, damit du erkennest, daß ich Jahwe bin!
And there came a man of Elohim, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith YHWH, Because the Syrians have said, YHWH is Elohim of the hills, but he is not Elohim of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am YHWH.
29 So lagerten sie sieben Tage lang einander gegenüber; am siebenten Tag aber kam's zur Schlacht, und die Israeliten erschlugen von den Aramäern hunderttausend Mann Fußvolks an einem Tage.
And they pitched one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day.
30 Die Übriggebliebenen aber flohen nach Aphek in die Stadt hinein; da fiel die Stadtmauer auf siebenundzwanzigtausend Mann, die übrig geblieben waren. Auch Benhadad war geflohen, und gelangte in die Stadt, aus einer Kammer in die andere.
But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and there a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men that were left. And Ben-hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.
31 Da sprachen seine Diener zu ihm: Wohlan, wir haben gehört, daß die Könige des Hauses Israel barmherzige Könige sind; so laß uns nun härene Gewänder um unsere Hüften legen und Stricke um unsere Häupter und uns dem Könige von Israel ergeben; vielleicht läßt er dich am Leben.
And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life.
32 Darauf umgürteten sie ihre Hüften mit härenen Gewändern und ihre Häupter mit Stricken, begaben sich zum Könige von Israel und sprachen: Dein Knecht Benhadad läßt dir sagen: Laß mich am Leben! Er erwiderte: lebt er noch? Mein Bruder ist er!
So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.
33 Die Männer aber dachten an gute Vorbedeutung und griffen es eilends von ihm auf und sprachen: Dein Bruder ist Benhadad. Er aber sprach: Geht und holt ihn! Da ging Benhadad zu ihm hinaus, und er ließ ihn zu sich auf den Wagen steigen.
Now the men did diligently observe whether any thing would come from him, and did hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Ben-hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben-hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.
34 Und Benhadad sprach zu ihm: Die Städte, die mein Vater deinem Vater weggenommen hat, will ich zurückgeben, und du magst dir Bazare zu Damaskus anlegen, wie mein Vater zu Samaria gethan hat. Was aber mich betrifft, so wollest du mich auf solche Vereinbarung hin freilassen. Da schloß er einen Vertrag mit ihm und ließ ihn ziehen.
And Ben-hadad said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.
35 Einer von den Prophetenjüngern aber sprach auf Geheiß Jahwes zu seinem Genossen: Verwunde mich doch! Jener aber weigerte sich, ihn zu verwunden.
And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of YHWH, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.
36 Da sprach er zu ihm: Darum, weil du dem Befehle Jahwes nicht gehorcht hast, so wird dich, sobald du von mir weggehst, ein Löwe verwunden. Und als er von ihm fortging, stieß ein Löwe auf ihn und verwundete ihn.
Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of YHWH, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.
37 Hierauf traf er einen anderen an und sprach: Verwunde mich doch! Da schlug ihn der andere wund.
Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, so that in smiting he wounded him.
38 Nun ging der Prophet hin, stellte sich an den Weg, den der König kommen mußte, und machte sich durch eine Binde über den Augen unkenntlich.
So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.
39 Sobald aber der König vorüberkam, schrie er den König an und sprach: Dein Sklave war mit ausgezogen mitten in die Schlacht; da trat plötzlich jemand aus der Schlachtreihe aus, brachte einen Mann zu mir und sprach: Bewache diesen Mann; würde er dennoch vermißt werden, so soll dein Leben für das seinige haften, oder du mußt ein Talent Silbers darwägen!
And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.
40 Während aber dein Sklave bald da, bald dort zu thun hatte, war er plötzlich verschwunden. Der König von Israel aber sprach zu ihm: So lautet dein Urteil; du hast es selbst gefällt!
And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.
41 Da that er eilends die Binde von seinen Augen, und der König von Israel erkannte ihn, daß er zu den Propheten gehörte.
And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel discerned him that he was of the prophets.
42 Jener aber sprach zu ihm: So spricht Jahwe: Weil du den Mann, der meinem Banne verfallen war, aus deiner Hand gelassen hast, so soll nun dein Leben für sein Leben haften, und dein Volk für sein Volk!
And he said unto him, Thus saith YHWH, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
43 Und der König von Israel begab sich mißmutig und zornig nach seinem Hause und gelangte nach Samaria.
And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.
