Psalm 38

1 Ein Lied; von David, zum Erlernen. Bestraf mich nicht in Deinem Zorne, Herr! In Deinem Grimme züchtige mich nicht noch mehr!

Yahweh, when you are angry [with me], do not rebuke/scold me and punish me!

2 Denn Deine Pfeile sind gar tief in mich gedrungen, und Deine Hand liegt schwer auf mir.

[Now it is as though] you have shot your arrows at me and wounded me; you have struck me and knocked me down.

3 An meinem Fleische ist nichts heil ob Deinem Zorn, nichts unversehrt an meinem Leib ob meiner Sünde.

Because you have been angry with me, I am suffering great pain. Because of my sin, my whole body is diseased.

4 Denn meine Sünden übersteigen mir das Haupt, sind mir zu schwer, wie eine ungeheure Last.

All my sins are [like a flood] that covers my head; they are like a load that is very heavy, with the result that I cannot carry it.

5 Und eiternd faulen meine Wunden um meiner Torheit willen.

Because I have done foolish things, I have sores that have become worse, and they stink.

6 Ich winde mich und krümme mich so heftig und allzeit gehe ich betrübt einher.

[Sometimes] I am bent over, and [sometimes] I lie prostrate; I am sad/cry all day.

7 In meinem Innern wühlt der Brand; an meinem Leib ist nichts Gesundes.

My body is burning with fever, and I am very ill.

8 Ich bin gelähmt, zermalmt und stöhne; mir klopft das Herz.

I am completely exhausted, and I have no strength. I am very distressed, and I groan with pain.

9 Vor Dir liegt jeder meiner Wünsche offen, Herr; mein Seufzen ist Dir nicht verborgen.

Yahweh, you know that I desire [to be healed]; you hear me while I am groaning.

10 Mir pocht das Herz und steht mir still, und meine Kraft, mein Augenlicht versagen mir den Dienst.

My heat is pounding heavily, and all my strength is gone. I am no longer able to see well.

11 Die Freunde und Gefährten treten zurück vor meiner Plage; fern stehen die Verwandten mir.

My friends and neighbors stay away from me because of my sores; even my own family stays away from me.

12 Die auf mein Leben lauern, legen Schlingen, und die mein Unglück suchen, drohen mit Verderben und schmieden täglich Ränke.

And those who want to kill me set traps to catch me; those who want to harm me discuss ways to get rid of me; they plot against me all day.

13 Und ich? Ich bin wie taub und höre nichts, bin wie ein Stummer, der den Mund nicht öffnet,

Now I act like I’m deaf, and do not listen [to what they say]. I act like I cannot talk, so I say nothing [to reply to them].

14 bin wie ein Mensch, der nichts versteht und keinen Widerspruch im Munde führt.

I act like a man who does not answer [when people talk to him], because he cannot hear anything.

15 Denn ich vertraue, Herr, auf Dich; Du Herr, mein Gott, wirst Rede stehen,

But Yahweh, I trust in you. My Lord God, you will answer me.

16 Weil ich mir sag, sie dürfen meiner nimmer spotten, und glitte aus mein Fuß, nicht über mich frohlocken.

I said to you, “Do not cause [me to die, with the result that] my enemies will rejoice! Do not cause me to stumble, with the result that they will be very happy!”

17 Schon bin ich ja dem Falle nah, stets meiner Schwäche mir bewußt.

I say that because I am about to fall down, and I constantly have pain.

18 Denn ich bekenne meine Schuld und gräme mich um meine Sünde.

I confess the wrong things that I have done; I am [very] sorry for the sins that I have committed.

19 Doch zahlreich sind, die unverschuldet mich befeinden, und viele, die mich grundlos hassen,

My enemies are healthy and strong; there are many people who hate me for no reason.

20 und die mit Bösem Gutes mir vergelten, mich lästern, daß ich nach dem Guten strebe.

Those who do evil things to me in return for my doing good things to them oppose me because I try to do what is right.

21 Verlaß mich nicht, o Herr! Mein Gott, entfern Dich nicht von mir!

Yahweh, do not abandon me! My God, do not stay far from me!

22 Zu meinem Schutze schnell herbei! Zu Hilfe, Herr!

Lord, you are the one who saves/rescues me; Quickly [come and] help me!
