1 Kannst du das Krokodil mit einer Angel ziehen und seine Zunge mit dem Stricke niederdrücken?
Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook? Or tie up his jaws with a cord?
2 Kannst du ihm durch die Nase eine Binsenschnur durchziehen? Durchbohren mit dem Haken seine Backe?
Can you put a rope into his nose, or pierce his jaw through with a hook?
3 Wird's dir viel Flehens machen; wird's dir wohl gute Worte geben?
Will he make many pleas to you? Will he speak soft words to you?
4 Mit dir Verträge schließen, daß du's zum Knecht für immer nehmest?
Will he make a covenant with you, that you should take him for a servant forever?
5 Kannst du mit ihm wohl spielen wie mit einem Vöglein? Und bindest du's für deine Mädchen an,
Will you play with him as you would with a bird? Will you tie him up for your servant girls?
6 die seinetwegen Freundinnen einladen und unter Mägdlein es verlosen?
Will the groups of fishermen bargain for him? Will they divide him up to trade among the merchants?
7 Kannst du mit Stacheln seine Haut ihm spicken und seinen Kopf mit schwirrenden Harpunen?
Can you fill his hide with harpoons or his head with fishing spears?
8 Leg' deine Hand einmal daran! Bedenke, welch ein Kampf! Du tust's nie wieder."
Put your hand on him just once, and you will remember the battle and do it no more.
9 "Ja, seine Hoffnung wird getäuscht; bei seinem bloßen Anblick stürzt er hin.
See, the hope of anyone who does that is a lie; will not anyone be thrown down to the ground just by the sight of him?
10 Kein Mensch ist so verwegen, daß er's reizt. 'Wer stellt sich vor mich hin?
None is so fierce that he dare stir Leviathan up; who, then, is he who can stand before me?
11 Wer griff mich an, und ich ließ diesen unversehrt entkommen? Mein wär ein solcher unterm ganzen Himmel.'
Who has first given anything to me in order that I should repay him? Whatever is under the whole sky is mine.
12 Von seinen Gliedern kann ich nimmer schweigen und nicht von seiner Kraft, vom Ebenmaße seines Baues.
I will not keep silent concerning Leviathan's legs, nor about the matter of his strength, nor about his graceful form.
13 Wer kann sein äußeres Kleid beschreiben, und wer sein doppeltes Gebiß abzeichnen?
Who can strip off his outer covering? Who can penetrate his double armor?
14 Wer läßt in seines Rachens Doppeltüre sehen? Um seine Zähne lagert Schrecken.
Who can open the doors of his face— ringed with his teeth, which are a terror?
15 Sein Rücken ist aus Rinnen voller Schilde, in engem Anschluß fest verschlossen.
his back is made up of rows of shields, tight together as with a close seal.
16 Eins reiht sich an das andere; dazwischen gibt es keine Fuge.
One is so near to another that no air can come between them.
17 Ein jedes hängt am anderen fest. Sie schließen unzertrennlich sich zusammen.
They are joined to each other; they stick together, so that they cannot be pulled apart.
18 Sein Niesen läßt das Licht aufleuchten, und seine Augen sind der Morgenröte Wimpern gleich.
Light flashes out from his snorting; his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning dawn.
19 Aus seinem Rachen fahren Fackeln, sprühen Feuerfunken.
Out of his mouth go burning torches, sparks of fire leap out.
20 Aus seinen Nüstern fährt ein Dampf gleichwie aus einem siedend heißen Topf.
Out of his nostrils goes smoke like a boiling pot on a fire that has been fanned to be very hot.
21 Sein Odem zündet Kohlen an; aus seinem Rachen fahren Flammen.
His breath kindles coals into flame; fires go out from his mouth.
22 In seinem Nacken wohnt die Kraft; ein Sack hängt vorn an ihm herab.
In his neck is strength, and terror dances in front of him.
23 Die Wampen seines Fleisches haften fest, ihm angegossen, unbeweglich.
The folds of his flesh are joined together; they are firm on him; they cannot be moved.
24 Sein Herz fest wie ein Stein, fest wie ein unterer Mühlstein.
His heart is as hard as a stone— indeed, as hard as a lower millstone.
25 Wenn's auffährt, zagen Stärkste, sie taumeln ob der Wasserwirbel.
When he raises himself up, even the gods become afraid; because of fear, they draw back.
26 Wenn man's mit einem Schwerte trifft, hält dies nicht stand, nicht Lanze, Wurfgeschoß noch Panzer.
If a sword strikes him, it does nothing— and neither does a spear, an arrow, or any other pointed weapon.
27 Das Eisen achtet es für Stroh, für morsches Holz das Erz.
He thinks of iron as if it were straw, and of bronze as if it were rotten wood.
28 Nicht können's Pfeile je durchbohren, und Schleudersteine sind ihm wie Strohhalme.
An arrow cannot make him flee; to him sling stones become chaff.
29 Auch Keulen gelten ihm wie Halme, und übers Lanzenschwirren spottet es.
Clubs are regarded as straw; he laughs at the whirring flight of a spear.
30 Und unten sind an ihm ganz spitze Scherben. Wie eine Dreschwalze, so fährt es auf dem Schlamm dahin.
His lower parts are like sharp pieces of broken pottery; he leaves a spreading trail in the mud as if he were a threshing sledge.
31 Wie einen Topf, so läßt's die Tiefe brodeln; es macht das Wasser wie in einem Salbenkessel.
He makes the deep to foam up like a pot of boiling water; he makes the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 Ein Pfad aufleuchtet hinter ihm; man hält die Flut für Silberhaar.
He makes a shining wake behind him; one would think the deep had gray hair.
33 Auf Erden ist nicht seinesgleichen; geschaffen ist's, sich nicht zu fürchten.
On earth there is no equal to him, who has been made to live without fear.
34 Auf alles Mächtige schaut es voll Stolz, ist's doch ein König über alle stolzen Tiere."
He sees everything that is proud; he is king over all the sons of pride.”
