Job 4

1 Da gab ihm Eliphaz aus Teman also Antwort:

Then responded Eliphaz the Temanite, and said: —

2 "Hat man vor dich zur Prüfung je ein Ding gebracht, worüber du den Mut verloren hättest? Wer konnte je den Worten Einhalt tun?

If one attempt a word unto thee, wilt thou be impatient? But, to restrain speech, who, can endure?

3 Fürwahr, so viele hast du selbst belehrt, so manchen schwachen Arm gestählt.

Lo! thou hast admonished many, and, slack hands, hast thou been wont to uphold:

4 Den Strauchelnden hielt aufrecht deine Rede; die müden Kniee stärktest du.

Him that was stumbling, have thy words raised up, and, sinking knees, hast thou strengthened.

5 Jetzt kommt's an dich, da wirst du mutlos; wo dich's erfaßt, verzweifelst du.

But, now, it cometh upon thee, and thou despairest, It smiteth even thee, and thou art dismayed.

6 War deine Gottesfurcht nicht dein Vertrauen, und dein unsträflich Leben deine Hoffnung?

Is not, thy reverence, thy confidence? And is not, thy hope, the very integrity of thy ways?

7 Bedenke nur: Wer kommt je schuldlos um? Wo gehen Redliche zugrunde?

Remember, I pray thee, who, being innocent, hath perished, or when, the upright, have been cut off.

8 Die Unrecht pflügen, Böses säen, die ernten's auch. So weiß ich es.

So far as I have seen, They who plow for iniquity and sow misery, reap the same:

9 Durch Gottes Odem gehen sie zugrunde; durch seinen Zornhauch sterben sie.

By the blast of GOD, they perish, And, by the breath of his nostrils, are they consumed:

10 Der Löwen Stimmen selber, das Gebrüll der Leuen, der jungen Löwen Zähne werden ausgetilgt.

[Notwithstanding] the roaring of the lion, and the noise of the howling lion, yet, the teeth of the fierce lions, are broken:

11 Der Löwe geht zugrunde aus Beutemangel; der Löwin Junge müssen sich zerstreuen.

The strong lion perishing for lack of prey, Even the whelps of the lioness, are scattered.

12 Zu mir drang ein verstohlen Wort; mein Ohr vernahm davon nur ein Geflüster.

But, unto me, something was brought by stealth, —and mine ear caught a whispering of the same:

13 Im Wundertraum, bei Nachtgesichten, wenn Tiefschlaf auf die Menschen fällt,

When there were thoughts, from visions of the night, —When deep sleep falleth upon men,

14 da fuhr in mich ein Schrecken und ein Zittern, und Angst ließ mein Gebein erbeben.

Dread, came upon me, and trembling, The multitude of my bones, it put in dread:

15 Und über meinen Rücken lief es kalt; ein Schauder schüttelt' meinen Leib.

Then, a spirit, over my face, floated along, The hair of my flesh bristled-up:

16 Das Unbekannte stand vor mir; vor meinem Auge schwebte her ein Schatten. - Ein Säuseln hörte ich und eine Stimme:

It stood still, but I could not distinguish its appearance, I looked, but there was no form before mine eyes, —A whispering voice, I heard: —

17 'Ist gegen Gott ein Mensch gerecht; vor seinem Schöpfer einer rein?'

Shall, mortal man, be more just than GOD? Or a man be more pure than, his Maker?

18 Er traut dies seinen Dienern selbst nicht zu, und seinen Engeln flößt er Schrecken ein.

Lo! in his own servants, he trusteth not, and, his own messengers, he chargeth with error:

19 Nun vollends gar der Lehmhausmensch, der Sterbliche, aus Staub gebaut, noch leichter als die Motten zu zerdrücken!

How much more the dwellers in houses of clay, which, in the dust, have their foundation, which are crushed sooner than a moth:

20 Vom Morgen bis zum Abend werden sie vernichtet; unwiderruflich gehen sie zugrunde.

Betwixt morning and evening, are they broken in pieces, With none to save, they utterly perish:

21 Ja, wird denn nicht ihr Vorzug ihnen weggenommen? Durch Unvernunft nur sterben sie."

Is not their tent-rope within them, torn away? They die, disrobed of wisdom!
