Job 30
1 "Und jetzt verlachen solche mich, die jünger sind als ich, ja solche, deren Väter ich nicht beigesellen möchte meinen Herdenhunden!
But now [they that are] younger than I, have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to set with the dogs of my flock.
2 Was sollte mir selbst ihrer Hände Kraft, denn Rüstigkeit geht ihnen doch verloren!
Yes, to what [might] the strength of their hands [profit] me, in whom old age had perished?
3 Durch Mangel und durch harten Hunger sollen sie sich Nahrung aus der Wüste holen, dem Lande des Orkans und Sturmes.
For want and famine [they were] solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste.
4 Sie sollten Melde pflücken am Gesträuche, und ihre Nahrung seien Ginsterwurzeln!
Who cut up mallows by the bushes, and juniper roots [for] their food.
5 Von Wasserstellen sollten sie vertrieben werden! Man schreie über sie wie Diebe,
They were driven forth from among [men], (they cried after them, as [after] a thief; )
6 daß sie in schauerlichen Schluchten, in Erdlöchern und Felsenhöhlen siedeln,
To dwell in the clefts of the valleys, [in] caves of the earth, and [in] the rocks.
7 und daß sie im Gebüsche gröhlen und unter Nesseln sich zusammenkauern!
Among the bushes they brayed; under the nettles they were collected.
8 Sie, eine Brut so schlecht und ehrlos, sie sollten tief im Staube liegen!
[They were] children of fools, yes, children of base men: they were viler than the earth.
9 Und jetzt bin ich ihr Spottgesang; ich diene ihnen zum Gerede.
And now I am their song, yes, I am their by-word.
10 Ja, sie verabscheun mich und rücken fern von mir und scheun sich nicht, mir ins Gesicht zu speien.
They abhor me, they flee far from me, and spare not to spit in my face.
11 Er löste mir das Diadem und warf mich auf den Boden, daß sie den Zügel vor mir schießen lassen konnten.
Because he hath loosed my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me.
12 Zur Prüfung stehn die Gegner auf; sie lähmen mir die Füße und werfen gegen mich die Wege für ihr Unheil auf.
Upon [my] right [hand] rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.
13 Sie reißen meine Pfade auf, verhelfen mir zum Falle, und niemand hindert sie.
They mar my path, they set forward my calamity, they have no helper.
14 Sie kommen wie ein breiter Dammbruch her; sie wälzen sich mit Ungestüm heran.
They came [upon me] as a wide breaking in [of waters]: in the desolation they rolled themselves [upon me].
15 Da kommen Schrecken über mich; dem Wind gleich jagt mein Glück davon; fort zieht mein Heil wie eine Wolke.
Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passeth away as a cloud.
16 Mein Leben ist in mir zerflossen, und jammervolle Tage halten mich gefesselt.
And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.
17 Des Nachts bohrt's mir in dem Gebein; auf meinen bloßgelegten Knochen kann ich nimmer liegen.
My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.
18 Mit Allgewalt packt er mich an und schnürt mich in des Unterkleides Schlitze ein.
By the great force [of my disease] is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.
19 Er wirft mich in den Schmutz; dem Staub, der Asche bin ich gleich. -
He hath cast me into the mire, and I have become like dust and ashes.
20 Ich schreie auf zu Dir. Doch Du hörst nicht auf mich. Ich halte ein; da gibst Du auf mich acht.
I cry to thee, and thou dost not hear me: I stand up, and thou regardest me [not].
21 Du zeigst Dich grausam gegen mich und geißelst mich mit Deiner starken Hand.
Thou hast become cruel to me: with thy strong hand thou opposest thyself against me.
22 Du schickst den Wind, mich zu entführen; der Sturm fährt mit mir auf und ab.
Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to ride [upon it], and dissolvest my substance.
23 Ich weiß ja wohl: Du willst zum Tod mich treiben, in das Versammlungshaus für alles Lebende.
For I know [that] thou wilt bring me [to] death, and [to] the house appointed for all living.
24 Auf Wunsch jedoch greift er nicht zu, schreit man in seinem Unglück drob um Hilfe. -
Yet he will not stretch out [his] hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction.
25 Beweinte ich nicht den Unseligen; war nicht mein Herz des Armen wegen sehr betrübt? -
Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was [not] my soul grieved for the poor?
26 Weil ich auf Glück gehofft, doch Unheil kam; auf Licht geharrt, doch Dunkel kam,
When I looked for good, then evil came: and when I waited for light, there came darkness.
27 so ist im Aufruhr ohne Unterlaß mein Inneres. Des Leidens Tage überfielen mich.
My bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction came upon me.
28 Tieftraurig wandle ich einher, wo keine Sonne scheint. Ich trete dem Vereine bei, wo ich nur heulen kann.
I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, [and] I cried in the congregation.
29 Der Schakale Vereinsbruder bin ich und ein Gesell dem Vogel Strauß.
I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls.
30 Zu schwarz ward meine Haut, daß sie mir bliebe, und mein Gebein ist mir von Glut verbrannt.
My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.
31 So diente meine Harfe mir zum Trauerliede, zu bitterem Schluchzen die Schalmei."
My harp also is [turned] to mourning, and my organ into the voice of them that weep.
