Job 2
1 Doch da geschah's an einem Tage: Die Gottessöhne kamen und stellten vor dem Herrn sich auf; da kam der Satan auch mit ihnen und stellte vor dem Herrn sich auf.
And it came to pass on a certain day, that the angels of God came to stand before the Lord, and the devil came among them to stand before the Lord.
2 Da sprach der Herr zum Satan: "Woher kommst du?" Der Satan gab dem Herrn zur Antwort: "Ich komme her von einem Streifzug auf der Erde, von einer Wanderung auf ihr."
And the Lord, said to the devil, Whence come you? Then the devil said before the Lord, I am come from going through the world, and walking about the whole earth.
3 Da sprach der Herr zum Satan: "Hast du bemerkt, daß Job, mein Knecht, nicht seinesgleichen auf der Erde hat, ein Mann, so fromm und recht, so gottesfürchtig und dem Bösen feind, und noch hält er an seiner Frömmigkeit so fest. Du hast mich grundlos aufgereizt, ihn so zu quälen."
And the Lord said to the devil, Hast you then observed my servant Job, that there is none of [men] upon the earth like him, a harmless, true, blameless, godly man, abstaining from all evil? and he yet cleaves to innocence, whereas you has told [me] to destroy his substance without cause?
4 Da sprach zum Herrn der Satan: "Ja Leib für Leib! Selbst alles, was ein Mann besitzt, das gibt er für sich selber hin.
And the devil answered and said to the Lord, Skin for skin, all that a man has will he give as a ransom for his life.
5 Doch führe einmal einen Schlag und rühr an sein Gebein und Fleisch, ob er nicht ins Gesicht hinein Dich 'segnet'!"
Nay, but put forth your hand, and touch his bones and his flesh: verily he will bless you to [your] face.
6 Da sprach der Herr zum Satan: "Nun wohl, er sei in deiner Hand! Nur schone mir sein Leben!"
And the Lord said to the devil, Behold, I deliver him up to you; only save his life.
7 Da ging vom Herrn der Satan weg und schlug den Job mit einem schrecklichen Geschwür vom Kopfe bis zum Fuß.
So the devil went out from the Lord, and struck Job with sore boils from [his] feet to [his] head.
8 Er nahm sich eine Scherbe, um sich damit zu schaben, und saß dabei im Aschenhaufen.
And he took a potsherd to scrape away the discharge, and sat upon a dung-heap outside the city.
9 Da sprach sein Weib zu ihm: "Noch hältst du fest an deiner Frömmigkeit? Nun 'segne' Gott und stirb!"
Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.
10 Er aber sprach zu ihr: "Wie unvernünftige Weiber reden, so redest du. Ja, sollen wir allein das Gute von Gott annehmen, dagegen nicht das Schlimmste?" Bei alldem hatte Job mit seinen Lippen nicht gesündigt.
But he looked on her, and said to her, You have spoken like one of the foolish women. If we have received good things of the hand of the Lord, shall we not endure evil things? In all these things that happened to him, Job sinned not at all with his lips before God.
11 Drei Freunde Jobs vernahmen von all dem Unglück, das auf ihn gekommen; da machten sie sich auf, ein jeglicher von seinem Wohnort, von Teman Eliphaz, Bildad von Schuach, von Naama Sophar, und sie bestellten sich zusammen, um zu gehen, ihm ihr Beileid zu bezeugen und ihn zu trösten.
Now his three friends having heard of all the evil that was come upon him, came to him each from his own country: Eliphaz the king of the Thaemans, Baldad sovereign of the Saucheans, Sophar king of he Minaeans: and they came to him with one accord, to comfort and to visit him.
12 Doch wie sie ihre Augen von ferne erhoben, erkannten sie ihn nicht. Sie fingen laut zu weinen an, zerrissen jeglicher sein Kleid und streuten Staub sich himmelwärts aufs Haupt.
And when they saw him from a distance they did not know him; and they cried with a loud voice, and wept, and tore every one his garment, and sprinkled dust upon [their heads],
13 Sie saßen auf der Erde so bei ihm wohl sieben Tage, sieben Nächte, und keiner sprach ein Wort zu ihm; sie sahen. Das Leid war furchtbar groß.
and they sat down beside him seven days and seven nights, and no one of them spoke; for they saw that his affliction was dreadful and very great.
