2 Samuel 1

1 Und erst nach Sauls Tod war David vom Sieg über die Amalekiter heimgekehrt; er weilte nun zwei Tage in Siklag.

Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;

2 Da kam am dritten Tag ein Mann aus dem Lager, von Saul her, seine Kleider zerrissen und Staub auf dem Kopfe. Als er zu David kam, neigte er sich bis zur Erde und verbeugte sich.

It came even to pass on the third day, that behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and [so] it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

3 Da sprach David zu ihm: "Woher kommst du?" Er sprach: "Ich bin aus Israels Lager entronnen."

And David said to him, From whence comest thou? And he said to him, Out of the camp of Israel have I escaped.

4 Da sprach David zu ihm: "Wie ging es? Berichte mir!" Er sprach: "Das Kriegsvolk ist aus der Schlacht geflohen, und viele aus dem Volke sind gefallen, so daß sie starben und tot sind. Auch Saul und sein Sohn Jonatan sind tot."

And David said to him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people have fled from the battle, and many of the people also have fallen, and are dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.

5 Da sprach David zu dem jungen Manne, der ihm die Botschaft brachte: "Wie weißt du, daß Saul und sein Sohn Jonatan tot sind?"

And David said to the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?

6 Da sprach der junge Mann, der ihm die Botschaft brachte: "Ich bin zufällig auf das Gebirge des Gilboa gekommen. Da hatte sich Saul auf seinen Speer gelehnt. Die Wagen aber und die Reiterei waren schon dicht hinter ihm her.

And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

7 Da wandte er sich um und sah mich. Er rief mich an, und ich sprach: 'Da bin ich!'

And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. And I answered, Here [am] I.

8 Dann sprach er zu mir: 'Wer bist du?' Ich sprach zu ihm: 'Ich bin ein Amalekiter.'

And he said to me, Who [art] thou? And I answered him, I [am] an Amalekite.

9 Da sprach er zu mir: 'Tritt herzu und gib mir den Todesstoß! Mich befällt Ohnmacht; denn ich lebe noch.'

He said to me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life [is] yet whole in me.

10 Da trat ich zu ihm und gab ihm den Todesstoß. Denn ich wußte, daß er seinen Sturz nicht überleben würde. Ich nahm das Diadem auf seinem Haupte und die Spange an seinem Arm und bringe sie hier meinem Herrn."

So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he had fallen: and I took the crown that [was] upon his head, and the bracelet that [was] on his arm, and have brought them hither to my lord.

11 Da packte David seine Gewänder und zerriß sie, ebenso alle Männer bei ihm.

Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that [were] with him:

12 Und sie trauerten, weinten und fasteten bis zum Abend um Saul und seinen Sohn Jonatan und um das Volk des Herrn und um das Haus Israel, daß sie durch das Schwert gefallen waren.

And they mourned and wept, and fasted until evening, for Saul and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they had fallen by the sword.

13 Dann sprach David zu dem jungen Mann, der ihm die Meldung brachte: "Woher bist du?" Er sprach: "Ich bin der Sohn eines zugewanderten Amalekiters."

And David said to the young man that told him, Whence [art] thou? And he answered, I [am] the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.

14 Da sprach David zu ihm: "Wie? Du hast dich nicht gescheut, Hand anzulegen, um den Gesalbten des Herrn umzubringen?"

And David said to him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thy hand to destroy the LORD'S anointed?

15 Dann rief David einen seiner Knechte und sprach: "Her! Stoß ihn nieder!" Da schlug er ihn nieder, so daß er starb.

And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, [and] fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.

16 Und David sprach zu ihm: "Dein Blut über dein Haupt! Dein eigener Mund klagt dich an; du sagtest: 'ich habe den Gesalbten des Herrn getötet.'"

And David said to him, Thy blood [be] upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD'S anointed.

17 Dann dichtete David dieses Klagelied auf Saul und seinen Sohn Jonatan:

And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul, and over Jonathan his son:

18 Er sprach: "Man lehre es die Söhne Judas auf der Zither!" Aufgezeichnet ist es im "Buche des Richtigen":

(Also he bade them teach the children of Judah [the use of] the bow: behold, [it is] written in the book of Jasher.)

19 "Der Adel liegt, o Israel, erschlagen dort auf deinen Höhen. Wie sind gestürzt die Helden!

The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!

20 Verkündet's nicht zu Gat! Bringt nicht die Botschaft in die Gassen Askalons, daß der Philister Töchter sich nicht freuen, nicht jubeln dieser Unbeschnittenen Töchter!

Tell [it] not in Gath, publish [it] not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

21 Ihr Berge Gilboas! Nicht Tau, nicht Regen falle mehr auf euch und nicht auf die Gefilde Dotains! Dort ward des Helden Schild zuschanden, der Schild des zwiefach ölgesalbten Saul!

Ye mountains of Gilboa, [let there be] no dew, neither rain upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, [as though he had] not [been] anointed with oil.

22 Vor der unreinen Sippe, vor Kriegsvolk ist nie der Bogen Jonatans zurückgewichen. Nie kehrte leer zurück das Schwert des Saul.

From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.

23 Saul und Jonatan, die Lieben und die Holden, im Leben und im Tode sind sie nicht getrennt, einst schneller als die Adler und stärker als die Löwen.

Saul and Jonathan [were] lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

24 Ihr Töchter Israels! Weint über Saul, der euch in Purpur lieblich kleidete, Der Goldschmuck eurer Kleidung gab!

Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with [other] delights, who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

25 Wie sind die Helden hingestürzt im Kampfgedränge! Auf deinen Höhen wurde Jonatan erschlagen.

How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan [thou wast] slain in thy high places.

26 Mein Bruder Jonatan! So leid ist mir um dich. Du warst mir gar so hold. Noch wundersamer war mir

I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been to me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

27 Wie sind die Helden hingestürzt! Des Krieges Waffen schwanden hin."

How have the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!
