1 Samuel 17
1 Da versammelten die Philister ihr Heer zum Kampfe. Sie sammelten sich bei Soko in Juda und lagerten zwischen Soko und Azeka zu Ephes Dammim.
And the Philistines gathered together their hosts, unto battle, and they were gathered together unto Socoh, which belongeth unto Judah, —and they encamped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephes-dammim;
2 Auch Saul und die Mannschaft Israels hatten sich gesammelt, und sie lagerten im Terebinthentale. Sie rüsteten sich zum Angriff auf die Philister.
and, Saul and the men of Israel, gathered themselves together, and encamped in the vale of Elah, and set the army in array against the Philistines.
3 Die Philister aber standen an dem Gebirge auf der einen Seite, und Israel auf der anderen; das Tal aber lag dazwischen.
And, the Philistines, were standing near the hill on one side, and, the Israelites, were standing near the hill on the other side, —while, the valley, was between them.
4 Da trat ein jüngerer Mann aus den Reihen der Philister. Er hieß Goliat und war aus Gat, sechs Ellen und eine Spanne hoch.
And there came forth a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, Goliath, his name, from Gath, —his height, six cubits and a span;
5 Er hatte einen Helm aus Erz auf dem Haupte und trug einen Schuppenpanzer. Der Panzer wog 5.000 Ring Erz.
with a helmet of bronze on his head, and, with a scaly coat of mail, was he clad, —the weight of the coat, being five thousand shekels of bronze;
6 An den Beinen trug er eherne Schienen und zwischen den Schultern einen ehernen Nackenschirm.
and, greaves of bronze, on his feet, —and, a javelin of bronze, between his shoulders;
7 Sein Speerschaft war wie ein Weberbaum, und seine Lanzenspitze war 600 Ring Eisen schwer. Und vor ihm schritt ein Schildträger.
and, the shaft of his spear, was like a weaver’s beam, and, the flashing head of his spear, was six hundred shekels of iron, —and, his shield-bearer, was coming on before him.
8 Er stellte sich nun hin, rief Israels Reihen zu und sprach zu ihnen: "Warum zieht ihr kampfgerüstet aus? Bin ich nicht der Philister, und ihr seid Sauls Knechte? Wählt aus euch einen Mann, daß er zu mir herabkomme!
And he took his stand, and cried unto the ranks of Israel, and said unto them, Wherefore should ye come out, to set in array for battle? Am not, I, a Philistine, while, ye, are servants unto Saul? Choose you a man, and let him come down unto me:
9 Kann er mit mir kämpfen und schlägt er mich, dann wollen wir euch untertan sein. Komme aber ich ihm bei und schlage ihn, dann müßt ihr uns untertan sein und uns dienen."
If he prevail in fighting with me, and smite me, then will we become your servants, —but, if, I, prevail over him, and smite him, then shall ye become our servants, and serve, us.
10 Weiter sprach der Philister: "Ich höhne heute Israels Reihen. Stellt mir einen Mann, daß wir miteinander kämpfen!"
And the Philistine said—I, reproach the ranks of Israel, this day, —give me a man, that we may fight together.
11 Saul aber und ganz Israel hörten diese Worte des Philisters. Da erschraken sie und fürchteten sich recht.
When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and feared exceedingly.
12 David aber war der Sohn jenes Ephratiters aus Bethlehem in Juda namens Isai. Er hatte acht Söhne. Der Mann aber war in Sauls Tagen schon betagt unter den Männern.
Now, David, was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem-judah, whose, name, was Jesse, and, who, had eight sons, —and, the man, in the days of Saul was old, advanced in years.
13 So zogen die drei ältesten Söhne Isais, die Saul gefolgt waren, in den Kampf. Und seine drei Söhne, die in den Krieg zogen, hießen Eliab, der Erstgeborene, Abinadab, sein zweiter, und Samma, der dritte.
And the three eldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to the battle, —and, the names of his three sons who went into the battle, were Eliab the firstborn, and, the next to him, Abinadab, and, the third, Shammah.
14 David aber war der jüngste. Die drei ältesten also waren Saul gefolgt.
But, as for David, he, was the youngest, —and, the three eldest, followed Saul;
15 David ging nun öfters von Saul heim, seines Vaters Schafe in Bethlehem zu hüten.
whereas, David, kept going and returning from Saul, —to tend his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.
16 Der Philister aber trat früh und spät hervor und stellte sich hin, vierzig Tage lang.
And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, —and presented himself forty days.
17 Da sprach Isai zu seinem Sohne David: "Nimm doch für deine Brüder ein Maß von diesem gerösteten Korn und diese zehn Brote und bringe sie schnell deinen Brüdern ins Lager!
And Jesse said unto David his son, Take, I pray thee, unto thy brethren—this ephah of parched corn, and these ten loaves, —and run to the camp unto thy brethren;
18 Und diese zehn Milchkäse mögest du dem Obersten der Tausend bringen. Und deine Brüder sollst du begrüßen und ihren Sold mitbringen!
also these ten slices of soft cheese, shalt thou take to the captain of their thousand, —and, as for thy brethren, give good heed to their welfare, their pledge, also shalt thou receive.
19 Saul und sie und alle andere Mannschaft Israels liegen im Terebinthentale gegen die Philister zu Felde."
Now, Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the vale of Elah, ready to fight with the Philistines.
20 Da übergab David frühmorgens die Schafe einem Hüter, nahm die Sachen und ging, wie ihn Isai geheißen hatte. Als er zu dem Wagenkreis kam, rückte das Heer eben zum Kampfe aus und erhob den Schlachtruf.
So then David rose up early in the morning, and entrusted the sheep to a keeper, and took up [the provisions] and went his way, as Jesse had commanded him, —and came into the circular rampart, as, the force, was going forth into the ranks, and shouted for the fight.
21 So standen Israel und die Philister kampfbereit, Reihe gegen Reihe.
So Israel and the Philistines set in array for battle, army against army.
22 Da übergab David das Gepäck dem Troßwächter und lief zur Schlacht hin. Als er hinkam, begrüßte er seine Brüder.
Then David entrusted the provisions that were upon him to the care of the keeper of the stores, and ran unto the ranks, —and came and asked for the welfare of his brethren.
23 Während er eben mit ihnen redete, kam der junge Mann, der Philister Goliat - so hieß er - aus Gat, aus der Reihe der Philister hervor und führte solche Worte. Und David hörte es.
Now, as he was speaking with them, lo! the champion coming up, Goliath the Philistine, by name, of Gath, [coming up] out of the ranks of the Philistines, and he spake according to these words, —and David heard [them].
24 Als aber Israels Mannschaft den Mann sah, flohen sie alle vor ihm und fürchteten sich recht.
Now, all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from before him, and feared exceedingly.
25 Da sprach ein Mann aus Israel: "Habt ihr diesen Mann hervortreten sehen? Nur um Israel zu höhnen, tritt er auf. Wer ihn schlüge, den beschenkte der König reichlich und gäbe ihm seine Tochter und machte seines Vaters Haus in Israel steuerfrei."
And the men of Israel said—Have ye seen this man that is coming up? For, to reproach Israel, is he coming. So then it shall be, that, the man that shall smite him, the same, will the king enrich with great riches, and, his own daughter, will give him, and, his father’s house, will he make free in Israel.
26 Da sprach David zu den Mannen, die bei ihm standen: "Was soll dem Manne werden, der diesen Philister schlägt und Schmach von Israel nimmt? Wer ist dieser unbeschnittene Philister, daß er die Kampfscharen des lebendigen Gottes höhnt?"
Then spake David unto the men that were standing by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that shall smite yonder Philistine, and so shall take away reproach from off Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he hath reproached the ranks of a Living God?
27 Da sagte ihm das Volk das gleiche: "So wird dem Manne, der ihn schlägt."
And the people answered him, according to this word saying, —So, shall it be done to the man that shall smite him.
28 Da hörte ihn sein ältester Bruder Eliab mit den Mannen sprechen. Und Eliab geriet in heftigen Zorn über David und sprach: "Wozu bist du herabgekommen? Wem hast du die paar Schafe da in der Steppe überlassen? Ich kenne deinen Übermut und deines Herzens Bosheit. Nur um den Kampf zu schauen, bist du herabgekommen."
Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men, —then was kindled the anger of Eliab against David, and he said—Wherefore is it that thou hast come down? and to whom hast thou entrusted those few sheep in the wilderness? I, know thy pride, and the foolishness of thy heart, for, to see the battle, hast thou come down.
29 Da sprach David: "Was habe ich jetzt getan? War es nicht bloß eine Frage?"
And David said, What have I done, now? Was there not, a cause?
30 Und wandte sich von ihm einem anderen zu und fragte das gleiche. Und das Volk beschied ihn wie das erstemal.
Then turned he from him unto another, and said—according to this word, —and the people returned him an answer, like the first.
31 Sie vernahmen aber auch die Worte, die David sprach, und meldeten sie Saul. Da ließ er ihn holen.
And the words which David spake were overheard, —and, when they told them before Saul, he summoned him.
32 Und David sprach zu Saul: "Niemand verliere seinetwegen den Mut! Dein Sklave geht und kämpft mit diesem Philister."
And David said unto Saul, Let not the heart of my lord fail, because of him, —thy servant, will go, and fight with this Philistine.
33 Da sprach Saul zu David: "Du kannst nicht gegen diesen Philister ziehen und mit ihm kämpfen. Du bist ein Knabe. Er aber ist ein Kriegsmann von Jugend auf."
And Saul said unto David—Thou art not able to go against this Philistine, to fight with him, —for, a youth, art, thou, but, he, a man of war, from his youth.
34 Da sprach David zu Saul: "Dein Sklave hütet seinem Vater die Schafe. Ist da der Leu zugleich mit dem Bären gekommen und hat ein Schaf aus der Herde fortgetragen,
Then said David unto Saul, Thy servant used to tend his father’s sheep, —and there would come a lion, or a bear, and carry off a lamb out of the flock;
35 so bin ich ihm nachgelaufen, habe ihn geschlagen und es ihm aus dem Rachen gerissen. Stellte er sich gegen mich, dann habe ich ihn an der Mähne gepackt und ihn totgeschlagen.
and I would go out after him, and smite him, and rescue it out of his mouth, —and, if he rose against me, I would catch him by his beard, and smite him, and slay him.
36 Den Löwen und den Bären hat dein Sklave erschlagen, und diesem unbeschnittenen Philister geht es wie einem von jenen, weil er die Kampfscharen des lebendigen Gottes höhnt."
Thy servant could slay, either a lion or a bear, —and, this uncircumcised Philistine, shall become, as one of them, for he hath reproached the ranks of a Living God.
37 Dann sprach David: "Der Herr, der mich aus Löwen- und Bärenpranken gerettet, kann mich auch aus dieses Philisters Hand retten." Da sprach Saul zu David: "Geh hin! Der Herr ist mit dir."
And David said, Yahweh, who hath rescued me out of the power of the lion, and out of the power of the bear, he, will rescue us out of the hand of this Philistine. Then said Saul unto David—Go! and, Yahweh, will be with thee.
38 Und Saul legte David seinen Waffenrock an, setzte ihm einen ehernen Helm aufs Haupt und legte ihm einen Panzer an.
And Saul clad David with his own military coat, and set a helmet of bronze upon his head, —and clad him with a coat of mail.
39 Dann gürtete David sein Schwert über seinen Waffenrock und mühte sich zu gehen; denn er war es nicht gewohnt. Da sprach David zu Saul: "Ich kann nicht darin gehen; ich bin es nicht gewohnt." Und David legte die Rüstung ab.
And David girded his sword above his military coat, but was reluctant to go, for he had not proved them, —so David said unto Saul—I cannot go in these, for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
40 Dann nahm er seinen Stock in die Hand, suchte sich fünf glatte Steine aus dem Bach, tat sie in seine Hirtentasche, die er anhatte, und zwar in die Tasche, und nahm seine Schleuder zur Hand. So trat er gegen den Philister vor.
Then took he his stick in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the torrent-bed, and put them in the shepherd’s-pouch which he had—even in the wallet, and had his sling in his hand, —and so drew near unto the Philistine.
41 Der Philister aber kam immer näher auf David zu, vor ihm der Mann, der den Schild trug.
And the Philistine came on and on, and drew near unto David, —and the man carrying the shield was before him.
42 Da schaute der Philister auf und sah David. Und er nahm ihn nicht ernst, denn er war noch ein Knabe, bräunlich, dazu von schmuckem Aussehen.
And, when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him, —for he was a youth, and ruddy, a stripling of fair countenance.
43 Dann sprach der Philister zu David: "Bin ich ein Hund, daß du zu mir mit Stecken kommst?" Dann fluchte der Philister dem David bei seinen Göttern.
Then said the Philistine unto David, A dog, am, I, that thou art coming unto me, with sticks? And the Philistine cursed David, by his god.
44 Und der Philister sprach zu David: "Komm her zu mir, daß ich dein Fleisch den Vögeln des Himmels gebe und den Tieren des Feldes!"
And the Philistine said unto David, —Come, unto me, that I may give thy flesh to the birds of heaven, and to the beasts of the field.
45 Da sprach David zum Philister: "Du kommst zu mir mit Schwert und Spieß und Wehr. Ich aber komme zu dir im Namen des Herrn der Heerscharen, des Gottes der Kampfscharen Israels, die du verhöhnst.
Then said David unto the Philistine—Thou, art coming unto me with sword, and with spear, and with javelin, —but, I, am coming unto thee in the name of Yahweh of hosts, God of the ranks of Israel which thou hast reproached.
46 Heute liefert dich der Herr in meine Hand, daß ich dich schlage und dir den Kopf abhaue. Die Leichen des Philisterheeres aber gebe ich heute den Vögeln des Himmels und dem Wild der Erde. Und so erkenne die ganze Welt, daß in Israel ein Gott ist!
This day, will Yahweh deliver thee into my hand, and I will smite thee, and take thy head from off thee, and will give thy dead body and the dead bodies of the host of Philistines, this day, unto the birds of heaven, and unto the wild beasts of the earth, —that all the earth may know that Israel hath a God;
47 Auch diese ganze Schar erfahre es, daß der Herr hilft, aber nicht durch Schwert und Speer! Denn der Kampf ist des Herrn, und er gibt euch in unsere Hand."
and that all this gathered host may know that, not with sword and with spear, doth Yahweh save, —for, unto Yahweh, belongeth the battle, and he will deliver you into our hand.
48 Darauf erhob sich der Philister und ging gegen David zum Nahkampfe vor; da lief David schnell der Philisterschlachtreihe entgegen.
And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew near to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the ranks to meet the Philistine.
49 Dann fuhr David mit der Hand in die Tasche, nahm daraus einen Stein, schleuderte ihn und traf den Philister an die Stirn. Und der Stein drang in seine Stirn, und er fiel auf sein Antlitz zu Boden.
And David thrust his hand into his pouch, and took from thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine, in his forehead, —that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell upon his face, to the earth.
50 So überwand David mit Schleuder und Stein den Philister und tötete ihn, ohne daß David ein Schwert zur Hand hatte.
Thus David prevailed over the Philistine, with the sling and with the stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him, —but, sword, was there none in the hand of David.
51 David lief nun hin, trat neben den Philister, nahm sein Schwert, zog es aus der Scheide und tötete ihn. Dann hieb er ihm den Kopf ab. Als die Philister sahen, daß ihr Held tot war, flohen sie.
So David ran, and stood by the Philistine, and took his sword and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off, therewith, his head, —and, when the Philistines saw that their hero was slain, they fled.
52 Jetzt erhoben sich die Männer Israels und Judas, stimmten den Kriegsruf an und verfolgten die Philister bis gegen Gat und vor die Tore Ekrons. Erschlagene der Philister fielen noch auf dem Wege nach Saaraim und bis nach Gat und Ekron.
Then arose the men of Israel and Judah, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, as far as the entrance into Gath, and as far as the gates of Ekron, —and the slain of the Philistines fell in the way to the two gates, even as far as Gath and as far as Ekron.
53 Dann kehrten Israels Söhne von der Verfolgung der Philister zurück und plünderten ihr Lager.
And the sons of Israel returned from hotly pursuing the Philistines, —and plundered their camps.
54 David aber nahm des Philisters Kopf und brachte ihn nach Jerusalem. Und seine Waffen legte er in dem Zelte nieder.
And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it into Jerusalem, —but, his armour, put he into his tent.
55 Als Saul den David dem Philister entgegenschreiten sah, fragte er den Heeresobersten Abner: "Wessen Sohn ist der Jüngling, Abner?" Da sprach Abner: "So wahr du lebst, König, ich weiß es nicht."
And, when Saul saw David going forth to meet the Philistine, he said unto Abner, prince of the host, Whose son is the young man, Abner? And Abner said, By the life of thy soul, O king! I know not.
56 Und der König sprach: "Frag du selbst, wessen Sohn der junge Mann ist!"
Then said the king, —Ask, thou, whose son the stripling is?
57 Als David von der Besiegung des Philisters zurückkehrte, nahm ihn Abner und führte ihn vor Saul; er aber hatte noch des Philisters Kopf in der Hand.
And, when David returned from smiting the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul, —with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
58 Da sprach Saul zu ihm: "Wessen Sohn bist du, Knabe?" David sprach: "Deines Sklaven, des Bethlehemiten Isai, Sohn."
And Saul said unto him, Whose son art, thou, O young man? And David said, Son of thy servant Jesse, the Bethlehemite.
