1 Samuel 13

1 Saul war fünfzig Jahre alt, als er König ward, und zwei Jahre hatte er über Israel geherrscht.

And Saul chooses for himself three thousand men of the men of Israel: and there were with Saul two thousand who were in Machmas, and in mount Baethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gabaa of Benjamin: and he sent the rest of the people every man to his tent.

2 Saul warb nun 3.000 aus Israel an. Bei Saul aber blieben 2.000 zu Mikmas und auf dem Gebirge Betels, 1.000 aber waren bei Jonatan zu Gibea Benjamins. Den Rest hatte er entlassen, jeden in sein Zeit.

3 Da schlug Jonatan den Philistervogt in Geba. Die Philister aber erfuhren es. Nun hatte Saul im ganzen Land in das Horn stoßen und verkünden lassen: "Hören sollen es die auf der anderen Seite!"

And Jonathan smote Nasib the Philistine that dwelt in the hill; and the Philistines hear of it, and Saul sounds the trumpet through all the land, saying, The servants have despised [us].

4 So vernahm ganz Israel die Kunde: "Saul hat den Philistervogt geschlagen, und Israel ist bei den Philistern anrüchig geworden." Da ward das Volk aufgeboten und folgte Saul nach dem Gilgal.

And all Israel heard say, Saul has smitten Nasib the Philistine; now Israel had been put to shame before the Philistines; and the children of Israel went up after Saul in Galgala.

5 Die Philister aber hatten sich zum Kampf gegen Israel versammelt, 30.000 Wagen und 6.000 Reiter sowie Fußvolk, an Menge gleich dem Sand am Meeresufer. So zogen sie herauf und lagerten zu Mikmas, östlich von Bet Awen.

And the Philistines gather together to war with Israel; and then come up against Israel thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand by the seashore for multitude: and they come up, and encamp in Machmas, opposite Baethoron southward.

6 Israels Männer aber merkten, daß sie in Not kämen; denn das Volk war bestürzt. So verbarg sich das Volk in Höhlen, Erdlöchern, Felsspalten, Grüften und Gruben.

And the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait so that they could not draw nigh, and the people hid themselves in caves, and sheepfolds, and rocks, and ditches, and pits.

7 Und zuletzt zogen sie über die Jordanfurten in das Land Gad und Gilead. Saul aber blieb immer noch im Gilgal, obwohl das ganze Volk sich heftig nach ihm sehnte.

And they that went over went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Galaad: and Saul was yet in Galgala, and all the people followed after him in amazement.

8 Er wartete sieben Tage bis zu der Frist, die Samuel bestimmt hatte. Aber Samuel kam nicht nach dem Gilgal. Da verlief sich das Volk.

And he continued seven days for the appointed testimony, as Samuel told him, and Samuel came not to Galgala, and his people were dispersed from him.

9 So sprach denn Saul: "Bringt mir das Brandopfer und die Mahlopfer!" Dann vollzog er das Brandopfer.

And Saul said, Bring hither [victims], that I may offer whole-burnt-offerings and peace-offerings: and he offered the whole-burnt-offering.

10 Eben war er mit dem Darbringen des Brandopfers fertig, da kam Samuel. Saul ging ihm nun entgegen, ihn zu begrüßen.

And it came to pass when he had finished offering the whole-burnt-offering, that Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet him, [and] to bless him.

11 Da sprach Samuel: "Was hast du getan?" Saul sprach: "Ich habe gesehen, wie das Volk mir davongelaufen ist, und du bist nicht zur bestimmten Frist eingetroffen, obschon die Philister in Mikmas versammelt sind.

And Samuel said, What hast thou done? and Saul said, Because I saw how the people were scattered from me, and thou was not present as thou purposedst according to the set time of the days, and the Philistines were gathered to Machmas.

12 Da sprach ich: 'Nun werden die Philister gegen mich ins Gilgal ziehen, bevor ich den Herrn begütigt habe.' Und so überwand ich mich und brachte das Brandopfer dar."

Then I said, Now will the Philistines come down to me to Galgala, and I have not sought the face of the Lord: so I forced myself and offered the whole-burnt-offering.

13 Da sprach Samuel zu Saul: "Du hast töricht gehandelt. Hättest du des Herrn, deines Gottes, Befehl, den er dir gegeben, befolgt, dann hätte der Herr dein Königtum über Israel für immer bestätigt.

And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly; for thou hast not kept my command, which the Lord commanded thee, as now the Lord would have confirmed thy kingdom over Israel for ever.

14 So aber wird dein Königtum keinen Bestand haben. Der Herr hat sich schon einen Mann nach seinem Herzen ausgesucht, und ihn bestellte er zum Fürsten über sein Volk. Denn du hast nicht befolgt, was dir der Herr befohlen hat."

But now thy kingdom shall not stand to thee, and the Lord shall seek for himself a man after his own heart; and the Lord shall appoint him to be a ruler over his people, because thou hast not kept all that the Lord commanded thee.

15 Dann erhob sich Samuel und ging aus dem Gilgal nach Gibea Benjamins hinauf. Da musterte Saul das Volk, das sich bei ihm fand, an 600 Mann.

And Samuel arose, and departed from Galgala, and the remnant of the people went after Saul to meet [him] after the men of war, when they had come out of Galgala to Gabaa of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were found with him, about six hundred men.

16 Saul und sein Sohn Jonatan sowie das Volk, das sich bei ihm fand, weilten in Gibea Benjamin. Die Philister aber lagerten in Mikmas.

And Saul and Jonathan his son, and the people that were found with them, halted in Gabaa, of Benjamin; and they wept: and the Philistines had encamped in Machmas.

17 Da zog eine Plündererschar aus dem Philisterlager in drei Haufen. Der eine Haufe wandte sich nach dem Wege von Ophra ins Gebiet von Saul,

And men came forth to destroy out of the land of the Philistines in three companies; one company turning by the way of Gophera toward the land of Sogal,

18 der andere nach dem von Betchoron und der dritte nach dem Wege über den Hügel, der über das Hyänental auf die Steppe schaut.

and another company turning the way of Baethoron, and another company turning by the way of Gabae that turns aside to Gai of Sabim.

19 Im ganzen Lande Israel aber fand sich kein Schmied. Denn die Philister hatten gesagt: "Die Hebräer machen sich sonst Schwerter oder Lanzen!"

And there was not found a smith in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make themselves sword or spear.

20 So mußte ganz Israel zu den Philistern hinabgehen, wenn jemand seine Pflugschar, seinen Karst, seine Axt und seinen Ochsenstachel schmieden lassen wollte.

And all Israel went down to the Land of the Philistines to forge every one his reaping-hook and his tool, and every one his axe and his sickle.

21 Harte Steine dienten als Schneiden an den Pflugscharen, Karsten, Dreizacken, Äxten und zum Wetzen der Sicheln.

And it was near the time of vintage: and their tools were [valued at] three shekels for a plough-share, and there was the same rate for the axe and the sickle.

22 So hatte sich am Kampftage weder Schwert noch Lanze beim gesamten Kriegsvolk vorgefunden, das bei Saul und Jonatan war. Nur bei Saul und seinem Sohn Jonatan fanden sich solche.

And it came to pass in the days of the war of Machmas, that there was not a sword or spear found in the hand of all the people, that were with Saul and Jonathan; but with Saul and Jonathan his son was there found.

23 Da rückte ein Philisterposten gegen den Paß von Mikmas vor.

And there went out some from the camp of the Philistines to the place beyond Machmas.
