Epheser 4

1 Ich ermahne euch nun, ich, der Gefangene im Herrn, daß ihr würdig wandelt der Berufung, mit welcher ihr berufen worden seid,

I beg you, then – I who am a prisoner in the Master’s cause – to live lives worthy of the call that you have received;

2 mit aller Demut und Sanftmut, mit Langmut, einander ertragend in Liebe,

always humble and gentle, patient, bearing lovingly with one another,

3 euch befleißigend, die Einheit des Geistes zu bewahren in dem Bande des Friedens.

and striving to maintain in the bond of peace the unity given by the Spirit.

4 Da ist ein Leib und ein Geist, wie ihr auch berufen worden seid in einer Hoffnung eurer Berufung.

There is but one body and one Spirit, just as there was but one hope set before you when you received your call.

5 Ein Herr, ein Glaube, eine Taufe,

There is but one Lord, one faith, one baptism.

6 ein Gott und Vater aller, der da ist über allen und durch alle und in uns allen.

There is but one God and Father of all – the God who is over all, pervades all, and is in all.

7 Jedem einzelnen aber von uns ist die Gnade gegeben worden nach dem Maße der Gabe des Christus.

Everyone of us, however, has been entrusted with some charge, each in accordance with the extent of the gift of the Christ.

8 Darum sagt er: “Hinaufgestiegen in die Höhe, hat er die Gefangenschaft gefangen geführt und den Menschen Gaben gegeben”.

That is why it is said – “When he went up on high, he led his captives into captivity. And gave gifts to humanity.”

9 Das aber: Er ist hinaufgestiegen, was ist es anders, als daß er auch hinabgestiegen ist in die unteren Teile der Erde?

Now surely this “going up” must imply that he had already gone down into the world beneath.

10 Der hinabgestiegen ist, ist derselbe, der auch hinaufgestiegen ist über alle Himmel, auf daß er alles erfüllte.

He who went down is the same as he who went up – up beyond the highest heaven, so that he might fill all things with his presence.

11 Und er hat die einen gegeben als Apostel und andere als Propheten und andere als Evangelisten und andere als Hirten und Lehrer,

And he it is who gave to the church apostles, prophets, missionaries, pastors, and teachers,

12 zur Vollendung der Heiligen, für das Werk des Dienstes, für die Auferbauung des Leibes Christi,

to fit his people for the work of the ministry, for the building up of the body of the Christ.

13 bis wir alle hingelangen zu der Einheit des Glaubens und zur Erkenntnis des Sohnes Gottes, zu dem erwachsenen Manne, zu dem Maße des vollen Wuchses der Fülle des Christus;

And this will continue, until we all attain to that unity which is given by faith and by a fuller knowledge of the Son of God; until we reach maturity – the full standard of the perfection of the Christ.

14 auf daß wir nicht mehr Unmündige seien, hin-und hergeworfen und umhergetrieben von jedem Winde der Lehre, die da kommt durch die Betrügerei der Menschen, durch ihre Verschlagenheit zu listig ersonnenem Irrtum;

Then we will no longer be like infants, tossed backward and forward, blown about by every breath of human teaching and by people’s trickery and craftiness;

15 sondern die Wahrheit festhaltend in Liebe, laßt uns in allem heranwachsen zu ihm hin, der das Haupt ist, der Christus,

but holding the truth in a spirit of love, we will grow into complete union with him who is our head – Christ himself.

16 aus welchem der ganze Leib, wohl zusammengefügt und verbunden durch jedes Gelenk der Darreichung, nach der Wirksamkeit in dem Maße jedes einzelnen Teiles, für sich das Wachstum des Leibes bewirkt zu seiner Selbstauferbauung in Liebe.

For from him the whole body, closely joined and knit together by the contact of every part with the source of its life, derives its power to grow, in proportion to the vigour of each individual part; and so is being built up in a spirit of love.

17 Dieses nun sage und bezeuge ich im Herrn, daß ihr forthin nicht wandelt, wie auch die [übrigen] Nationen wandeln, in Eitelkeit ihres Sinnes,

This, then, as one in union with the Lord, I implore: Do not continue to live such purposeless lives as the Gentiles live,

18 verfinstert am Verstande, entfremdet dem Leben Gottes wegen der Unwissenheit, die in ihnen ist, wegen der Verstockung ihres Herzens,

with their powers of discernment darkened, cut off from the life of God, owing to the ignorance that prevails among them and to the hardness of their hearts.

19 welche, da sie alle Empfindung verloren, sich selbst der Ausschweifung hingegeben haben, alle Unreinigkeit mit Gier auszuüben.

Lost to all sense of shame, they have abandoned themselves to licentiousness, in order to practice every kind of impurity without restraint.

20 Ihr aber habt den Christus nicht also gelernt,

But far different is the lesson you learned from the Christ – if, that is, you really listened to him,

21 wenn ihr anders ihn gehört habt und in ihm gelehrt worden seid, wie die Wahrheit in dem Jesus ist:

and through union with him were taught the truth, as it is to be found in Jesus.

22 daß ihr, was den früheren Lebenswandel betrifft, abgelegt habt den alten Menschen, der nach den betrügerischen Lüsten verdorben wird,

For you learned with regard to your former way of living that you must cast off your old nature, which, yielding to deluding passions, grows corrupt;

23 aber erneuert werdet in dem Geiste eurer Gesinnung

that the spirit of your minds must be constantly renewed;

24 und angezogen habt den neuen Menschen, der nach Gott geschaffen ist in wahrhaftiger Gerechtigkeit und Heiligkeit.

and that you must clothe yourselves in that new nature which was created to resemble God, with the righteousness and holiness springing from the truth.

25 Deshalb, da ihr die Lüge abgelegt habt, redet Wahrheit, ein jeder mit seinem Nächsten, denn wir sind Glieder voneinander.

Since, therefore, you have cast off what is false, you must every one of you speak the truth to your neighbours. For we are united to one another like the parts of a body.

26 Zürnet, und sündiget nicht. Die Sonne gehe nicht unter über eurem Zorn,

Be angry, yet do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your anger;

27 und gebet nicht Raum dem Teufel.

and give no opportunity to the devil.

28 Wer gestohlen hat, stehle nicht mehr, sondern arbeite vielmehr und wirke mit seinen Händen das Gute, auf daß er dem Dürftigen mitzuteilen habe.

Let the person who steals steal no longer, but rather they should toil with their hands at honest work, so that they may have something to share with anyone in need.

29 Kein faules Wort gehe aus eurem Munde, sondern das irgend gut ist zur notwendigen Erbauung, auf daß es den Hörenden Gnade darreiche.

Never let any foul word pass your lips, but only such good words as the occasion demands, so that they may be a help to those who hear them.

30 Und betrübet nicht den Heiligen Geist Gottes, durch welchen ihr versiegelt worden seid auf den Tag der Erlösung.

And do not grieve God’s Holy Spirit; for it was through that Spirit that God sealed you as his, against the day of redemption.

31 Alle Bitterkeit und Wut und Zorn und Geschrei und Lästerung sei von euch weggetan, samt aller Bosheit.

Let all bitterness, passion, anger, brawling, and abusive language be banished from among you, as well as all malice.

32 Seid aber gegeneinander gütig, mitleidig, einander vergebend, gleichwie auch Gott in Christo euch vergeben hat.

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, ready to forgive one another, just as God, in Christ, forgave you.
