Nahum 1
1 Ausspruch über Ninive. Das Buch des Gesichtes Nahums, des Elkoschiters.
The declaration about Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum, the Elkoshite.
2 Ein eifernder und rächender Gott [El] ist Jehova, ein Rächer ist Jehova und voll von Grimm; Jehova übt Rache an seinen Widersachern und trägt seinen Feinden nach.
Yahweh is a jealous God and avenges; Yahweh avenges and is full of wrath; Yahweh takes vengeance on his adversaries, and he continues his anger for his enemies.
3 Jehova ist langsam zum Zorn und groß an Kraft, und er hält keineswegs für schuldlos [O. läßt keineswegs ungestraft] den Schuldigen. Jehova-im Sturmwind und im Gewitter ist sein Weg, und Gewölk ist der Staub seiner Füße.
Yahweh is slow to anger and great in power; he will not allow the wicked to go unpunished. Yahweh makes his way in the whirlwind and the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
4 Er schilt das Meer und legt es trocken, und alle Flüsse macht er versiegen; Basan und Karmel verwelken, und es verwelkt die Blüte des Libanon.
He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; he dries up all the rivers. Bashan is weak, and Carmel also; the flowers of Lebanon are weak.
5 Vor ihm erbeben die Berge und zerfließen die Hügel, und vor seinem Angesicht erhebt sich die Erde [Vergl. Jes. 13,13,] und der Erdkreis und alle, die darauf wohnen.
The mountains shake in his presence, and the hills melt; the earth collapses in his presence, indeed, the world and all people who live in it.
6 Wer kann vor seinem Grimme bestehen, und wer standhalten bei der Glut seines Zornes? Sein Grimm ergießt sich wie Feuer, und die Felsen werden von ihm zerrissen.
Who can stand before his wrath? Who can resist the fierceness of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken apart by him.
7 Jehova ist gütig, er ist eine Feste [O. ein Schutz, eine Zuflucht] am Tage der Drangsal; und er kennt die, welche auf ihn vertrauen [Eig. die Zuflucht zu ihm nehmen.]
Yahweh is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he is faithful to those who take refuge in him.
8 Und mit einer überschwemmenden Flut wird er ihre Stätte [d. i. Ninives] gänzlich zerstören, und Finsternis wird [And. üb.: in [od. mit] Finsternis wird er] seine Feinde verfolgen.
But he will make a full end to his enemies with an overwhelming flood; he will pursue them into darkness.
9 Was sinnet ihr wider Jehova? [O. [an die Juden gerichtet] Was denket ihr von Jehova?] Er wird gänzlich zerstören; die Drangsal wird nicht zweimal erstehen.
What are you people plotting against Yahweh? He will make a full end to it; trouble will not rise up a second time.
10 Denn wären sie gar wie Dornen verflochten und von ihrem edlen Weine berauscht, sie sollen völlig verzehrt werden wie dürre Stoppeln.
For they will become tangled up like thornbushes; they will be saturated in their own drink; they will be completely devoured by fire like dry stubble.
11 Von dir [d. i. Ninive] ist ausgegangen, der Böses sann wider Jehova, ein nichtswürdiger Ratgeber.
Someone arose among you, Nineveh, who planned evil against Yahweh, someone who promoted wickedness.
12 So spricht Jehova: Wenn sie gleich unversehrt und noch so zahlreich sind, auch so sollen sie weggemäht werden; und er wird dahin sein. -Und habe ich dich [d. i. Juda] auch niedergebeugt, ich werde dich nicht mehr niederbeugen;
This is what Yahweh says, “Even if they are at their full strength and full numbers, they will nevertheless be sheared; their people will be no more. But you, Judah: Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more.
13 sondern ich werde nun sein Joch von dir zerbrechen und deine Bande zerreißen. -
Now will I break that people's yoke from off you; I will break your chains.”
14 Und über dich [d. i. den Assyrer] hat Jehova geboten, daß von deinem Namen nicht mehr gesät werden soll; aus dem Hause deines Gottes werde ich das geschnitzte und das gegossene Bild ausrotten; ich werde dir ein Grab machen, denn verächtlich bist du [O. zu leicht bist du erfunden.]
Yahweh has given a command about you, Nineveh: “There will be no more descendants bearing your name. I will cut off the carved figures and the cast metal figures from the houses of your gods. I will dig your graves, for you are contemptible.”
15 Siehe, auf den Bergen die Füße dessen, der gute Botschaft bringt, der Frieden [Zugl.: Heil] verkündigt! Feiere, Juda, deine Feste, bezahle deine Gelübde! denn der Nichtswürdige wird fortan nicht mehr durch dich ziehen; er ist ganz ausgerottet.
Look, on the mountains there are the feet of someone who is bringing good news, who is announcing peace! Celebrate your festivals, Judah, and keep your vows, for the wicked one will invade you no more; he is completely cut off.
