Lukas 14

1 An einem Sabbat ging er in das Haus eines Gemeindevorstehers, der zu den Pharisäern gehörte, um an einem Mahl teilzunehmen. Alle Tischgenossen sahen scharf auf ihn.

And it came to pass, when he entered into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees, on a Sabbath, to eat bread, that, they, were narrowly watching him.

2 Plötzlich stand ein Wassersüchtiger vor ihm.

And lo! there was, a certain man, who had the dropsy, before him.

3 Da nahm Jesus das Wort und sprach zu den Gesetzeslehrern und Pharisäern: "Darf man am Sabbat heilen oder nicht?"

And Jesus, answering, spake unto the Lawyers and Pharisees, saying—Is it allowed, on the Sabbath, to cure, or not? But, they, held their peace.

4 Sie schwiegen. Nun faßte er den Kranken bei der Hand, heilte ihn und ließ ihn gehen.

And taking hold [of him] he healed and dismissed him, —

5 Dann fragte er die Versammelten: "Zieht nicht jeder unter euch, dem am Sabbattag sein Esel oder sein Ochs in einen Brunnen fällt, ihn ohne weiteres sofort heraus?"

and, unto them, said—Which of you, shall have a son or an ox that, into a pit, shall fall, and will not straightway pull him up, on the day of rest?

6 Darauf konnten sie keine Antwort geben.

And they could not return an answer unto these things.

7 Als er bemerkte, wie sich die geladenen Gäste nach den ersten Plätzen drängten, trug er ihnen ein Gleichnis vor:

And he went on to speak, unto the invited, a parable, —observing how, the first couches, they were choosing; saying unto them—

8 "Wenn dich jemand zu einem Hochzeitsmahl lädt, so setze dich nicht obenan! Es könnte einer geladen sein, der vornehmer wäre als du.

Whensoever thou hast been invited by anyone unto a marriage feast, do not recline on the first couch; lest once, a more honourable than thou, have been invited by him,

9 Dann käme der Gastgeber, der euch beide geladen hat, und spräche zu dir: 'Mache diesem Platz!' Und du müßtest nun beschämt untenan sitzen.

and he that invited both thee and him should come, and say unto thee—Give, unto this one, place! and, then, thou shouldst begin, with shame, the last place, to occupy.

10 Wirst du geladen, so gehe vielmehr und setze dich untenan! Dann wird der Gastgeber kommen und dich auffordern: 'Freund, rücke weiter hinauf!' Das wird dir eine Ehre sein vor allen deinen Tischgenossen.

But, whensoever thou hast been invited, pass on and fall back into the last place, that, whensoever he that hath invited thee shall come, he may say unto thee—Friend! come close up, higher. Then, shalt thou have honour before all who are reclining together with thee.

11 Denn wer sich selbst erhöht, der soll erniedrigt werden; und wer sich selbst erniedrigt, der soll erhöht werden."

Because, everyone who exalteth himself, shall be abased; and, he that abaseth himself, shall be exalted?

12 Zu dem Gastgeber sprach er dann: "Richtest du ein Mahl aus am Mittag oder Abend, so lade nicht deine Freunde, deine Brüder, deine Verwandten und deine reichen Nachbarn dazu ein! Die laden dich sonst wieder ein, und so wird dir Gleiches mit Gleichem vergolten.

Moreover he went on to say, unto him also who had invited him, —Whensoever thou mayest be making a dinner or a supper, do not call thy friends, or thy brothers, or thy kinsfolk, or rich neighbours, —lest once, they also, invite thee in return, and it become a recompense unto thee.

13 Sondern wenn du jemand bewirten willst, so rufe Arme, Krüppel, Lahme und Blinde zu deiner Tafel!

But, whensoever, an entertainment, thou mayest be making, invite the destitute, the tried, the lame, the blind;

14 Dann bist du glücklich zu preisen; denn diese Leute können es dir nicht wiedervergelten. Es soll dir aber vergolten werden bei der Auferstehung der Gerechten."

and, happy, shalt thou be, that they have not wherewith to recompense thee, for it shall be recompensed unto thee, in the resurrection of the righteous.

15 Bei diesen Worten sprach einer von den Gästen zu ihm: "Heil dem, der einst teilnehmen darf an dem Mahl in Gottes Königreich!"

And one of those reclining together, hearing these things, said unto him—Happy, whoever shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!

16 Darauf versetzte Jesus: "Jemand wollte eine große Abendmahlzeit geben und lud viele dazu ein.

But, he, said unto him—A certain man, was making a great supper, and invited many;

17 Als dann der Tag des Mahles kam, sandte er seinen Knecht zu den geladenen Gästen mit der Botschaft: 'Kommt, es ist nun angerichtet!'

and he sent out his servant, at the hour of the supper, to say unto the invited—Be coming! because, even now, is it, ready.

18 Da begannen alle ohne Ausnahme sich zu entschuldigen. Der erste sprach zu ihm: 'Ich habe einen Acker gekauft und muß notwendig hingehen und ihn besichtigen; ich bitte dich: sieh mich als entschuldigt an.'

And they all began, one after another to excuse themselves. The first, said unto him—A field, have I bought, and have need to go out and see it: I request thee, hold me excused.

19 Ein anderer sagte: 'Ich habe fünf Paar Ochsen gekauft und will nun gerade hingehen, um sie mir anzusehen; ich bitte dich: sieh mich als entschuldigt an.'

And, another, said—Five yoke of oxen, have I bought, and am going my way to prove them; I request thee, hold me excused.

20 Ein dritter sprach: 'Ich habe mich eben verheiratet; darum kann ich nicht kommen.'

And, another, said—A wife, have I married, and, for this cause, I cannot come!

21 Der Knecht kam zurück und meldete das alles seinem Herrn. Da ward der Hausherr zornig und sprach zu seinem Knecht: 'Lauf schnell auf die Plätze und Straßen der Stadt und bring die Armen, die Krüppel, die Blinden und Lahmen her!'

And, going near, the servant reported unto his lord these things. Then, provoked to anger, the master of the house said unto his servant—Go out quickly, into the broadways and streets of the city, —and, the destitute, and tried, and blind, and lame, bring thou in here.

22 Der Knecht berichtete dann: 'Herr, dein Befehl ist ausgeführt; aber es ist noch Platz vorhanden.'

And the servant said—Lord! what thou didst order, hath been done; and, yet, there is, room.

23 Da sprach der Herr zu dem Knecht: 'Geh auf die Feldwege und an die Zäune und rede den Leuten, die dort sind, eindringlich zu hierherzukommen, damit mein Haus sich fülle!'

And the lord said unto the servant—Go out among the highways and fences, and compel them to come in; that my house may be filled.

24 Denn das sage ich euch: Keiner von den Männern, die zuerst geladen waren, soll mein Mahl genießen."

For, I say unto you—Not one of those men who had been invited, shall taste of my supper.

25 Große Scharen folgten ihm auf seiner Wanderung. An die wandte er sich mit den Worten:

And there were journeying together with him many multitudes; and, turning, he said unto them—

26 "Wer zu mir kommt und nicht aufgibt Vater und Mutter, Weib und Kinder, Brüder und Schwestern, dazu sein eigenes Leben, der kann nicht mein Jünger sein.

If anyone cometh unto me, and hateth not his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, further also, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

27 Wer nicht sein Kreuz trägt und mir nachfolgt, der kann nicht mein Jünger sein.

Whoever beareth not his own cross, and cometh after me, cannot be my disciple.

28 Will einer von euch einen Turm bauen, setzt er sich dann nicht erst hin und berechnet die Kosten, damit er wisse, ob er auch die Mittel hat, den Bau ganz auszuführen?

For, who from among you, wishing to build a tower, doth not first sit down and count the cost, —whether he hath sufficient for completion;

29 Es könnte sonst geschehen, daß er nach der Grundlegung nicht imstande wäre, das Werk zu vollenden. Dann aber würden alle, die es sehen, anfangen, über ihn zu spotten

lest once, he having laid a foundation, and not being able to finish, all who are looking on, should begin to mock at him,

30 und zu sagen: 'Dieser Mensch hat einen Bau begonnen, aber er hat ihn nicht zu Ende führen können.'

saying—This man, began to build, and was not able to finish!

31 Oder wenn ein König mit einem anderen König Krieg anfangen will, setzt er sich dann nicht erst hin und überlegt, ob er imstande ist, mit zehntausend Mann dem die Spitze zu bieten, der gegen ihn rückt mit zwanzigtausend?

Or, what king, moving on to encounter, another king, in battle, will not sit down first and take counsel, whether he is able, with ten thousand, to meet him who, with twenty thousand, is coming against him.

32 Wo nicht, so schickt er eine Gesandtschaft an ihn, solange er noch fern ist, und sucht Friedensverhandlungen einzuleiten.

And, if not, by any means, while he is yet afar off, he sendeth, an embassy, and requesteth the conditions of peace.

33 So kann auch keiner von euch mein Jünger sein, der nicht auf alles, was er hat, verzichtet.

Thus, therefore, everyone from amongst you, who doth not bid adieu unto all his own possessions, cannot be my disciple.

34 Das Salz ist etwas Gutes. Wird aber das Salz fade, womit soll man ihm dann seine Würzkraft wiedergeben?

Good, therefore is the salt; but, if, even the salt, become tasteless, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

35 Es ist weder für das Land noch für den Düngerhaufen brauchbar; man wirft es weg. Wer Ohren hat zu hören, der höre!"

Neither for land nor for manure, is it, fit: outside, they cast it! He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
