Matthieu 20

1 Le royaume des cieux est semblable à un père de famille qui sortit de grand matin, afin de louer des ouvriers pour sa vigne.

"For the Kingdom of the Heavens is like an employer who went out early in the morning to hire men to work in his vineyard,

2 Or, convention faite avec les ouvriers d’un denier par jour, il les envoya à sa vigne.

and having made an agreement with them for a shilling a day, sent them into his vineyard.

3 Et étant sorti de nouveau, vers la troisième heure, il en vit d’autres qui se tenaient sur la place sans rien faire.

About nine o'clock he went out and saw others loitering in the market-place.

4 Et il leur dit: Allez, vous aussi, à ma vigne, et ce qui sera juste, je vous le donnerai.

To these also he said, "'You also, go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.'

5 Et ils y allèrent. Il sortit encore vers la sixième et la neuvième heure, et il fit la même chose.

"So they went. Again about twelve, and about three o'clock, he went out and did the same.

6 Enfin, vers la onzième heure, il sortit, et il en trouva d’autres qui étaient là, et il leur dit: Pourquoi êtes-vous ici, tout le jour, sans rien faire?

And going out about five o'clock he found others loitering, and he asked them, "'Why have you been standing here all day long, doing nothing?'

7 Ils répondirent: Parce que personne ne nous a loués. Il leur dit: Allez, vous aussi, à ma vigne.

"'Because no one has hired us,' they replied. "'You also, go into the vineyard,' he said.

8 Or, lorsqu’il se fit soir, le maître de la vigne dit à son intendant: Appelle les ouvriers, et paye-les, en commençant par les derniers jusqu’aux premiers.

"When evening came, the master said to his steward, "'Call the men and pay them their wages. Begin with the last set and finish with the first.'

9 Ceux donc qui étaient venus vers la onzième heure s’étant approchés, reçurent chacun un denier.

"When those came who had begun at five o'clock, they received a shilling apiece;

10 Or les premiers venant ensuite, pensèrent qu’ils devraient recevoir davantage; mais ils reçurent aussi chacun un denier.

and when the first came, they expected to get more, but they also each got the shilling.

11 Et en le recevant, ils murmuraient contre le père de famille,

So when they had received it, they grumbled against the employer, saying,

12 Disant: Ces derniers ont travaillé une heure, et vous les traitez comme nous, qui avons porté le poids du jour et de la chaleur.

"'These who came last have done only one hour's work, and you have put them on a level with us who have worked the whole day and have borne the scorching heat.'

13 Mais, répondant à l’un d’eux, il dit: Mon ami, je ne te fais point de tort; n’es-tu pas convenu d’un denier avec moi?

"'My friend,' he answered to one of them, 'I am doing you no injustice. Did you not agree with me for a shilling?

14 Prends ce qui est à toi et va-t’en; je veux donner même à ce dernier autant qu’à toi.

Take your money and go. I choose to give this last comer just as much as I give you.

15 Ne m’est-il pas permis de faire ce que je veux? et ton œil est-il mauvais parce que je suis bon?

Have I not a right to do what I choose with my own property? Or are you envious because I am generous?'

16 Ainsi les derniers seront les premiers, et les premiers seront les derniers; car beaucoup sont appelés, mais peu sont élus.

"So the last shall be first, and the first last."

17 Or Jésus montant à Jérusalem prit à part les douze disciples et leur dit:

Jesus was now going up to Jerusalem, and He took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and on the way He said to them,

18 Voilà que nous montons à Jérusalem, et le Fils de l’homme sera livré aux princes des prêtres et aux scribes, et ils le condamneront à mort.

"We are going up to Jerusalem, and there the Son of Man will be betrayed to the High Priests and Scribes. They will condemn Him to death,

19 Et ils le livreront aux gentils pour être moqué et flagellé et crucifié; et le troisième jour il ressuscitera.

and hand Him over to the Gentiles to be made sport of and scourged and crucified; and on the third day He will be raised to life."

20 Alors la mère des fils de Zébédée s’approcha de lui avec ses fils, l’adorant et lui demandant quelque chose.

Then the mother of the sons of Zabdi came to Him with her sons, and knelt before Him to make a request of Him.

21 Jésus lui dit: Que voulez-vous? Elle lui répondit: Ordonnez que mes deux fils que voici soient assis, l’un à votre droite, l’autre à votre gauche, dans votre royaume.

"What is it you desire?" He asked. "Command," she replied, "that these my two sons may sit one at your right hand and one at your left in your Kingdom."

22 Mais, répondant, Jésus dit: Vous ne savez ce que vous demandez. Pouvez-vous boire le calice que je vais boire? Ils lui répondirent: Nous le pouvons.

"None of you know what you are asking for," said Jesus; "can you drink out of the cup from which I am about to drink?" "We can," they replied.

23 Il leur dit: Vous boirez en effet mon calice: mais d’être assis à ma droite ou à ma gauche, il ne m’appartient pas de vous l’accorder à vous, mais à ceux à qui mon Père l’a préparé.

"You shall drink out of my cup," He said, "but a seat at my right hand or at my left it is not for me to allot, but it belongs to those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."

24 Or, entendant cela, les dix s’indignèrent contre les deux frères.

The other ten heard of this, and their indignation was aroused against the two brothers.

25 Mais Jésus les appela à lui, et leur dit: Vous savez que les princes des nations les dominent, et que les grands exercent la puissance sur elles.

But Jesus called them to Him, and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.

26 Il n’en sera pas ainsi parmi vous; mais que celui qui voudra être le plus grand parmi vous, soit votre serviteur;

Not so shall it be among you; but whoever desires to be great among you shall be your servant,

27 Et celui qui voudra être le premier parmi vous sera votre esclave.

and whoever desires to be first among you shall be your bondservant;

28 Comme le Fils de l’homme n’est point venu pour être servi, mais pour servir et donner sa vie pour la rédemption d’un grand nombre.

just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as the redemption-price for many."

29 Lorsqu’ils sortaient de Jéricho, une grande foule le suivit:

As they were leaving Jericho, an immense crowd following Him,

30 Et voilà que deux aveugles assis sur le bord du chemin, entendirent que Jésus passait; et ils élevèrent la voix, disant: Seigneur, fils de David, ayez pitié de nous.

two blind men sitting by the roadside heard that it was Jesus who was passing by, and cried aloud, "Sir, Son of David, pity us."

31 Et la foule les gourmandait pour qu’ils se tussent; mais eux criaient encore plus, disant: Seigneur, fils de David, ayez pitié de nous.

The people angrily tried to silence them, but they cried all the louder. "O Sir, Son of David, pity us," they said.

32 Alors Jésus s’arrêta, les appela, et dit: Que voulez-vous que je vous fasse?

So Jesus stood still and called to them. "What shall I do for you?" He asked.

33 Ils lui répondirent: Seigneur, que nos yeux s’ouvrent.

"Sir, let our eyes be opened," they replied.

34 Et ayant pitié d’eux, Jésus toucha leurs yeux; et aussitôt ils recouvrèrent la vue et ils le suivirent.

Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes, and immediately they regained their sight and followed Him.
