Job 39
1 Est-ce que tu connais le temps de l’enfantement des chèvres sauvages dans les rochers? ou as-tu observé des biches lorsqu’elles enfantaient?
[Say] if you know the time of the bringing forth of the wild goats of the rock, and [if] you have marked the calving of the hinds:
2 As-tu compté les mois de leur conception, et sais-tu le temps de leur enfantement?
and [if] you has have numbered the full months of their being with young, and [if] you have relieved their pangs:
3 Elles se courbent pour mettre bas leur faon, et elles enfantent, et elles poussent des hurlements.
and have reared their young without fear; and will you loosen their pangs?
4 Leurs petits se séparent et vont au pâturage; ils sortent et ne reviennent pas vers elles.
Their young will break forth; they will be multiplied with offspring: [their young] will go forth, and will not return to them.
5 Qui a laissé aller l’onagre libre, qui a rompu ses liens?
And who is he that sent forth the wild ass free? and who loosed his bands?
6 Je lui ai donné dans la solitude une maison, et ses lieux de retraite dans une terre de sel.
whereas I made his habitation the wilderness, and the salt land his coverts.
7 Il méprise la multitude d’une ville, et il n’entend pas le cri d’un exacteur.
He laughs to scorn the multitude of the city, and hears not the chiding of the tax-gatherer.
8 Il regarde de tous côtés les montagnes, lieux de son pâturage, et il cherche tous les herbages verts.
He will survey the mountains [as] his pasture, and he seeks after every green thing.
9 Est-ce qu’un rhinocéros voudra te servir, ou demeurera-t-il à ton étable?
And will the unicorn be willing to serve you, or to lie down at your manger?
10 Est-ce que tu lieras un rhinocéros à tes traits, pour qu’il laboure? ou rompra-t-il les glèbes des vallons après toi?
And will you bind his yoke with thongs, or will he plow furrows for you in the plain?
11 Est-ce que tu auras confiance en sa grande force, et lui laisseras-tu tes travaux?
And do you trust him, because his strength is great? and will you commit your works to him?
12 Est-ce que tu croiras qu’il te rendra tes semailles et qu’il remplira ton aire?
And will you believe that he will return to you your seed, and bring [it] in [to] your threshing floor?
13 L’aile de l’autruche est semblable aux ailes du héron et de l’épervier.
The peacock has a beautiful wing: if the stork and the ostrich conceive, [it is worthy of notice],
14 Quand elle abandonne ses œufs sur la terre, sera-ce toi, par hasard, qui les réchaufferas dans la poussière?
for [the ostrich] will leave her eggs in the ground, and warm them on the dust,
15 Elle oublie qu’un pied les foulera, ou que la bête des champs les écrasera.
and has forgotten that the foot will scatter them, and the wild beasts of the field trample them.
16 Elle est dure pour ses petits, comme s’ils n’étaient pas les siens, elle a rendu son travail inutile, en les abandonnant, aucune crainte ne l’y obligeant.
She has hardened [herself] against her young ones, as though [she bereaved] not herself: she labors in vain without fear.
17 Car Dieu l’a privée de sagesse, et ne lui a pas donné l’intelligence.
For God has withholden wisdom from her, and not given her a portion in understanding.
18 Dans l’occasion, elle élève en haut ses ailes; elle se rit du cheval et de celui qui le monte.
In her season she will lift herself on high; she will scorn the horse and his rider.
19 Est-ce que tu donneras au cheval de la force, ou environneras-tu son cou de hennissements?
Hast you invested the horse with strength, and clothed his neck with terror?
20 Est-ce que tu le feras bondir comme les sauterelles? La gloire de ses naseaux est la terreur.
And have you clad him in perfect armor, and made his breast glorious with courage?
21 Il creuse de son sabot la terre, il s’élance avec audace; il court au-devant des hommes armés;
He paws exulting in the plain, and goes forth in strength into the plain.
22 Il méprise la peur, il ne cède pas au glaive.
He laughs to scorn a king as he meets him, and will by no means turn back from the sword.
23 Sur lui retentira le bruit du carquois, la lance étincellera ainsi que le bouclier.
The bow and sword resound against him; and [his] rage will swallow up the ground:
24 Bouillonnant et frémissant il dévore la terre, et ne tient aucun compte du bruit de la trompette, lorsqu’elle sonne le retour.
and he will not believe until the trumpet sounds.
25 Dès qu’il entend le clairon, il dit: Oh! il sent de loin une guerre, l’exhortation des chefs, et les cris confus d’une armée.
And when the trumpet sounds, he says, Aha! and afar off he smells the war with prancing and neighing.
26 Est-ce par ta sagesse que l’épervier se couvre de ses plumes, étendant ses ailes vers le midi?
And does the hawk remain steady by your wisdom, having spread out her wings unmoved, looking toward the region of the south?
27 Est-ce à ton ordre que l’aigle s’élèvera, et placera son nid dans les lieux les plus élevés?
And does the eagle rise at your command, and the vulture remain sitting over his nest,
28 C’est dans des pierres qu’il demeure, et c’est sur des rocs escarpés et des rochers inaccessibles qu’il fait son séjour.
on a crag of a rock, and in a secret [place]?
29 De là il contemple sa proie, et ses yeux voient de loin.
Thence he seeks food, his eyes observe from far.
30 Ses petits lécheront le sang, et partout où est un cadavre, soudain il est présent.
And his young ones roll themselves in blood, and wherever the carcasses may be, immediately they are found.
