Jérémie 16

1 Et la parole du Seigneur me fut adressée, disant:

And the word of Yahweh came unto me saying:

2 Tu ne prendras point de femme, et tu n’auras point de fils et de filles en ce lieu.

Thou shall not take to thee a wife, —Neither shalt thou have sons or daughters, in this place.

3 Parce que voici ce que dit le Seigneur sur les fils et les filles qui sont enfantés en ce lieu, et sur les mères qui les ont enfantés, et sur leurs pères de la souche desquels ils sont nés en cette terre:

For, Thus, saith Yahweh, Concerning the sons and concerning the daughters that are being born in this place, —and concerning their mothers who do bear them, and concerning their fathers who do beget them, in this land,

4 De différentes morts de maladies ils mourront; ils ne seront pas pleures et ils ne seront pas ensevelis; comme un fumier, ils seront sur la face de la terre; par le glaive et par la famine ils seront consumés, et leur cadavre sera en pâture aux volatiles du ciel et aux bêtes de la terre.

Of deaths from diseases, shall they die, They shall not be lamented, Neither shall they be buried, As heaps of dung on the face of the ground, shall they serve, —Yea by sword and by famine, shall they be consumed, And, their dead bodies shall become, food—To the bird of the heavens, and To the beast of the earth.

5 Car voici ce que dit le Seigneur: N’entre point dans une maison de festin; et ne va pas pour pleurer, et ne les console point; parce que j’ai retiré ma paix à ce peuple, dit le Seigneur, ma miséricorde et mes bontés.

For, Thus, saith Yahweh—Do not thou enter into the house of crying, Neither do thou go to lament, nor do thou bemoan for them, —For I have withdrawn my blessing from this people, Declareth Yahweh, Both lovingkindness and compassion.

6 Et ils mourront, grands et petits, sur cette terre, et ils ne seront pas ensevelis, ni pleures, et on ne se fera pas d’incision, et on ne se rasera pas la tête pour eux.

So shall great and small die in this land, They shall not be buried, —Neither shall men lament for them Nor cut themselves, Nor make themselves bald for them;

7 Et on ne rompra pas parmi eux de pain pour consoler celui qui pleure un mort, et on ne leur donnera pas le calice à boire pour le consoler de la perte de son père et de sa mère.

Neither shall they break bread to them in mourning To console one over his dead, —Nor cause them to drink the cup of consolation, Over one’s father Or over one’s mother;

8 Et tu n’entreras pas dans une maison d’un festin, afin de l’asseoir et de manger et de boire;

And the house of banqueting, shall thou not enter To sit with them, To eat and to drink.

9 Parce que voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées, Dieu d’Israël: Voilà que moi j’ôterai de ce lieu, à vos yeux et en vos jours, la voix de la joie et la voix de l’allégresse, la voix de l’époux et la voix de l’épouse.

For, Thus, saith Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, Behold me! causing to cease out of this place, Before your eyes, And in your days, The voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, The voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride,

10 Et lorsque tu annonceras à ce peuple toutes ces paroles, et qu’ils le diront: Pourquoi le Seigneur a-t-il prononcé sur nous tous ces grands maux? quelle est notre iniquité? et quel péché avons-nous commis contre le Seigneur notre Dieu?

And it shall be when thou shalt declare to this people, all these words, —and they shall say unto thee—For what reason, hath Yahweh pronounced against us all this great calamity? Or what is our iniquity, or what our sin, which we have sinned against Yahweh our God?

11 Tu leur diras: C’est parce que vos pères m’ont abandonné, dit le Seigneur, qu’ils ont couru après des dieux étrangers, qu’ils les ont servis, qu’ils les ont adorés; et qu’ils m’ont abandonné, et qu’ils n’ont point gardé ma loi.

Then shalt thou say unto them, —For that your fathers forsook, me, Declareth Yahweh, And walked after other gods, and served them, and bowed down to them, —Whereas me, they forsook And my law, kept they not;

12 Mais vous-même, vous avez fait pis que vos pères; car voilà que chacun marche à la suite de la dépravation de son cœur mauvais, afin de ne pas m’écouter.

And, ye, have done more wickedly than your fathers, —for look at you! walking every man after the stubbornness of his wicked heart, so as not to hearken unto me,

13 Et je vous jetterai de cette terre dans une terre que vous ignorez comme vos pères; et vous servirez là des dieux étrangers, le jour et la nuit, qui ne vous donneront pas de repos.

Therefore will I hurl you forth, from off this land, unto a land which ye have not known, ye, nor your fathers, —and ye can serve there other gods day and night, in that I will grant you no favour.

14 À cause de cela, voilà que des jours viennent, dit le Seigneur, et l’on ne dira plus: Le Seigneur vit! qui a retiré les fils d’Israël de la terre d’Egypte,

Therefore lo! days are coming, Declareth Yahweh, When it shall be said no more By the life of Yahweh, who brought up the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt; but—

15 Mais: Vive le Seigneur qui a tiré les fils d’Israël de la terre de l’aquilon, et de toutes les terres où je les ai jetés; et je les ramènerai dans leur terre que j’ai donnée à leurs pères.

By the life of Yahweh, who hath brought up the sons of Israel out of the land of the North, and out of all the lands whither he had driven them, —So will I bring them back upon their own soil, which I gave to their fathers.

16 Voilà que moi j’enverrai des pêcheurs nombreux, dit le Seigneur, et ils pécheront; et après cela je leur enverrai beaucoup de chasseurs, qui leur feront la chasse sur toute montagne, sur toute colline et dans toutes les cavernes des rochers;

Behold me! sending for many fishers Declareth Yahweh, And they shall catch them, —and thereafter will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from off every mountain and from off every hill, and out of the clefts of the crags.

17 Parce que mes yeux sont sur toutes les voies; elles ne sont pas cachées à ma face, et leur iniquité n’est pas voilée à mes yeux.

For mine own eyes are upon all their ways, they have not been hid from my face—neither hath their iniquity been concealed from being straight before mine eyes.

18 Et je leur rendrai d’abord au double leurs iniquités et leurs péchés, parce qu’ils ont souillé ma terre de morts pour leurs idoles, et que de leurs abominations ils ont rempli mon héritage.

Thus will I recompense, first, twofold, their iniquity and their sin, because of their profaning my land, —with the carcase of their disgusting and detestable things, have they filled mine inheritance.

19 Seigneur, mon courage, ma force et mon refuge au jour de la tribulation, vers vous viendront des nations des extrémités de la terre, et elles diront: Il est vrai que nos pères ont possédé le mensonge et la vanité, qui ne leur a pas été utile.

O Yahweh, my strength, and my refuge, and my place to fly to, in the day of distress, —Unto thee, shall nations come in, out of the ends of the earth, that they may say—Surely! Falsehood, did our fathers inherit, Vanity, among whom is none that can profit:

20 Est-ce qu’un homme se fera des dieux, lesquels même ne sont pas des dieux?

Shall a son of earth, make for himself gods, Seeing that, they, are no-gods?

21 C’est pourquoi voici que moi je leur montrerai cette fois, je leur montrerai ma main et ma force, et ils sauront que mon nom est le Seigneur.

Therefore behold me! causing them to know, by this stroke, I will cause them to know my hand and my might, —That they may know that my name, is Yahweh!
