Deutéronome 8
1 Prends bien garde de pratiquer tous les préceptes, que moi, je te prescris aujourd’hui, afin que vous puissiez vivre, que vous vous multipliiez, et, qu’après y être entrés, vous possédiez la terre au sujet de laquelle le Seigneur a juré à vos pères.
All the commandment which I am commanding thee to-day, shalt thou, observe, to do, —that ye may, live, and multiply, and enter in and possess the land, which Yahweh sware unto your fathers.
2 Et tu te souviendras de tout le chemin par lequel le Seigneur ton Dieu t’a conduit pendant quarante ans à travers le désert, pour t’affliger, t’éprouver et faire connaître ce qui se passait dans ton cœur: si tu garderais ses commandements, ou non.
So then, thou shalt remember all the way in which Yahweh thy God caused thee to journey these forty years in the desert, —that he might humble thee to put thee to the proof to know what was in thy heart, —whether thou wouldest keep his commandments or not.
3 Il t’a affligé par la faim, et il t’a donné pour nourriture la manne que tu ignorais, toi, et tes pères, afin de te montrer que ce n’est pas de pain seulement que l’homme vit, mais de toute parole qui sort de la bouche de Dieu.
So he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna which thou hadst not known, neither had thy fathers known, —that he might lead thee to consider that not on bread alone, shall the son of earth live, but on whatsoever cometh from the bidding of Yahweh, shall the son of earth live.
4 Ton vêtement dont tu étais couvert, n’a pas manqué par la vétusté, et ton pied n’a pas été déchiré en dessous, et voici la quarantième année.
Thy mantle, hath not fallen with age from off thee, and, thy foot, hath not become swollen, —these forty years.
5 C’est afin que tu penses en ton cœur, que comme un homme instruit son fils, ainsi le Seigneur ton Dieu t’a instruit;
Thou must consider, then with thy heart, —that as a man chasteneth his son, Yahweh thy God, hath been chastening thee.
6 Afin que tu gardes les commandements du Seigneur ton Dieu, que tu marches dans ses voies, et que tu le craignes.
Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments of Yahweh thy God, —to walk in his ways and to revere him.
7 Car le Seigneur ton Dieu t’introduira dans une terre bonne, terre de ruisseaux, d’eaux, et de fontaines, dans les champs et les montagnes de laquelle jaillissent des sources de fleuves.
For, Yahweh thy God, is bringing thee into a good land; a land of ravines of water, of fountains and depths, coming forth in valley, and in mountain:
8 Terre de blé, d’orge et de vignes, dans laquelle naissent les figuiers, les grenadiers et les oliviers; terre d’huile et de miel.
a land of wheat and barley, and vine and fig-tree, and pomegranate, —a land of olive oil, and honey:
9 Où tu mangeras ton pain sans en manquer jamais, où tu jouiras de l’abondance de toutes choses, dont les pierres sont du fer; et de ses montagnes on exploite des mines d’airain;
a land wherein not in scarcity, shalt thou eat food, thou shalt lack nothing therein, —a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest hew copper.
10 Afin que, lorsque tu auras mangé, et que tu te seras rassasié, tu bénisses le Seigneur ton Dieu pour la terre excellente qu’il t’a donnée.
So then thou shalt eat and be satisfied, —and bless Yahweh thy God, for the good land which he hath given unto thee.
11 Aie soin, et prends garde de n’oublier jamais le Seigneur ton Dieu, et de ne point négliger ses préceptes, ses ordonnances et ses cérémonies, que moi, je te prescris aujourd’hui;
Take heed to thyself, lest thou forget Yahweh thy God, —so as not to keep his commandments and his regulations and his statutes, which I am commanding thee to-day;
12 De peur qu’après que tu auras mangé, et que tu seras rassasié, que tu auras bâti de belles maisons, et que tu t’y seras établi,
lest thou eat, and be satisfied, —and goodly houses, thou build and inhabit;
13 Et que tu auras eu des troupeaux de bœufs, et des troupeaux de brebis, et une abondance d’argent et d’or de toutes choses,
and thy herd and thy flock, increase, and silver and gold, increase unto thee, —and all that thou hast, increase;
14 Ton cœur ne s’élève, et que tu ne te souviennes plus du Seigneur ton Dieu, qui t’a retiré de la terre d’Egypte, de la maison de servitude;
and so thy heart be lifted up, —and thou forget Yahweh thy God, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt out of the house of servants;
15 Qui a été ton guide dans le désert grand et terrible, dans lequel étaient des serpents au souffle brûlant, des scorpions et des dipsas, et où il n’y avait absolument aucune eau; qui a fait jaillir des ruisseaux de la pierre la plus dure,
who caused thee to journey through the great and terrible desert, of fiery serpents and scorpions, and thirsty wastes where was no water, —who brought forth for thee water out of the flinty rock;
16 Et qui t’a nourri dans le désert d’une manne que n’ont pas connue tes pères. Et après qu’il t’a eu affligé et éprouvé, il a eu enfin pitié de toi,
who fed thee with manna in the desert, which thy fathers had not known, —that he might humble thee, and that he might put thee to the proof, to do thee good in thy hereafter,
17 Afin que tu ne dises pas en ton cœur: C’est ma force, et la vigueur de ma main qui m’ont acquis toutes ces choses;
and lest thou shouldest say in thy heart, —Mine own strength and the might of mine own hand, have gotten me this wealth.
18 Mais que tu te souviennes que c’est le Seigneur ton Dieu lui-même qui t’a donné des forces, afin qu’il accomplît ainsi l’alliance au sujet de laquelle il a juré à tes pères, comme le montre le présent jour.
But thou shalt remember Yahweh thy God, that it was, he, who had been giving thee strength to get wealth, —that so he might establish his covenant which he sware to thy fathers (as at this day).
19 Mais si, oubliant le Seigneur ton Dieu, tu suis des dieux étrangers, et que tu les serves et les adores, voici maintenant que je te prédis que tu périras entièrement.
But it shall be if thou forget, Yahweh thy God, and go after ether gods, and serve them, and bow thyself down to them, I testify against you to-day, that ye shall perish:
20 Comme les nations qu’a détruites le Seigneur à ton entrée, ainsi vous aussi, vous périrez, si vous êtes désobéissants à la voix du Seigneur votre Dieu.
like the nations which, Yahweh, is causing to perish from before you, so, shall ye perish, because ye would not hearken unto the voice of Yahweh your God.
