1 Or Achab avait soixante-dix fils dans Samarie: Jéhu écrivit donc des lettres, et il les envoya à Samarie aux grands de la ville, aux anciens et à ceux qui élevaient les enfants d’Achab, disant:
Forsothe seuenti sones in Samarie weren to Achab. Therfor Hieu wroot lettris, and sente in to Samarie to the beste men of the citee, and to the gretter men in birthe, and to alle the nurschis of Achab, and seide,
2 Aussitôt que vous aurez reçu ces lettres, vous qui avez les enfants de votre maître, les chars, les chevaux, les villes fortes et les armes,
Anoon as ye han take these lettris, ye that han the sones of youre lord, and the charis, and horsis, and stronge citees, and armeris,
3 Choisissez le meilleur et celui qui vous plaira davantage, d’entre les fils de votre maître, et mettez-le sur le trône de son père, et combattez pour la maison de votre maître.
chese the beste, and hym that plesith to you of the sones of youre lord, and sette ye him on the trone of his fadir, and fiyte ye for the hows of youre lord.
4 Ceux-ci furent saisis d’une grande crainte, et ils dirent: Voilà que deux rois n’ont pu subsister devant lui, et comment nous, pourrons-nous résister?
And thei dredden greetli, and seiden, Lo! twei kyngis myyten not stonde bifor hym, and how schulen we mowe ayenstonde hym?
5 Les intendants de la maison du roi, les chefs de la ville, les anciens et ceux qui élevaient les princes, envoyèrent donc vers Jéhu, disant: Nous sommes vos serviteurs, tout ce que vous nous commanderez, nous le ferons; nous ne nous établirons point de roi: tout ce qu’il vous plaît, faites-le.
Therfor the souereyns of the hows, and the prefect of the citee, and the grettere men in birthe, and the nurchis senten to Hieu, and seiden, We ben thi seruauntis; what euer thingis thou comaundist, we schulen do, and we schulen not make a kyng to vs; do thou what euer thing plesith thee.
6 Or il leur écrivit des lettres une seconde fois, disant: Si vous êtes à moi, et que vous vouliez m’obéir, coupez les têtes des fils de votre maître, et venez vers moi à cette même heure demain, à Jezrahel. Or, les fils du roi, soixante-dix individus étaient élevés chez les grands de la ville.
Forsothe he wroot ayen to hem lettris the secunde tyme, and seide, If ye ben myne, and obeien to me, take ye the heedis of the sones of youre lord, and come ye to me in this same our to morewe in to Jezrael. Sotheli the sones of the kyng, seuenti men, weren nurschid at the beste men of the citee.
7 Et lorsque les lettres leur furent parvenues, ils prirent les fils du roi, et tuèrent ces soixante dix individus; ils mirent leurs têtes dans les corbeilles, et les envoyèrent à Jezrahel.
And whanne the lettris hadden come to hem, thei token the sones of the kyng, and killiden seuenti men, and puttiden the heedis of hem in coffyns; and senten to hym in to Jezrael.
8 Or le messager vint et l’annonça à Jéhu, disant: Ils ont apporté les têtes des enfants du roi. Jéhu répondit: Mettez-les en deux tas à l’entrée de la porte jusqu’au matin.
Forsothe a messanger cam to hym, and schewide to hym, and seide, Thei han brouyt the heedis of the sones of the king. Which answeride, Putte ye tho heedis to tweyne hepis, bisidis the entring of the yate, til the morewtid.
9 Et lorsqu’il fit jour, il sortit, et s’arrêtant, il dit à tout le peuple: Vous êtes justes; si c’est moi qui ai conspiré contre mon maître, et si je l’ai tué, qui est celui qui a frappé tous ceux-ci?
And whanne it was cleer dai, he yede out, and stood, and seide to al the puple, Ye ben iust men; if Y conspiride ayens my lord, and killide hym, who killide alle these?
10 Voyez donc maintenant qu’il n’est tombé par terre aucune des paroles du Seigneur, que le Seigneur a prononcées contre la maison d’Achab, et que le Seigneur a fait ce qu’il a dit par l’entremise de son serviteur Élie.
Therfor se ye now, that noon of the wordis of the Lord felde doun in to the erthe, whiche the Lord spak on the hows of Achab; and the Lord hath do that, that he spak in the hond of his seruaunt, Elie.
11 Jéhu frappa donc tous ceux qui restaient de la maison d’Achab dans Jezrahel, tous les grands de sa cour, ses familiers et ses prêtres, jusqu’à ce qu’il ne demeurât pas de restes de lui.
Therfor Hieu smoot alle that weren residue of the hows of Achab in Jezrael, and alle the beste men of hym, and knowun men, and preestis, til no relikis of hym leften.
12 Et il se leva et il vint à Samarie; et lorsqu’il fut venu près de la Cabane des pasteurs, en son chemin,
And he roos, and cam in to Samarie; and whanne he hadde come to the chaumbir of schepherdis in the weie,
13 Il trouva les frères d’Ochozias, roi de Juda, et il leur demanda: Qui êtes-vous? Ceux-ci répondirent: Nous sommes les frères d’Ochozias, et nous sommes descendus pour saluer les fils du roi et les fils de la reine.
he foond the britheren of Ocozie, kyng of Juda; and he seide to hem, Who ben ye? And thei answeriden, We ben the britheren of Ocozie, and we comen doun to grete the sones of the kyng and the sones of the queen.
14 Et Jéhu dit: Prenez-les vivants. Et, lorsqu’ils les eurent pris vivants, ils les égorgèrent sur une citerne près de la Cabane, au nombre de quarante-deux hommes, et il n’en resta pas un seul.
Which Hieu seide, Take ye hem quyke. And whanne thei hadden take hem quyke, thei strangliden hem in the cisterne, bisidis the chaumbre, two and fourti men; and he lefte not ony of hem.
15 Et lorsqu’il fut parti de là, il trouva Jonadab, fils de Réchab, à sa rencontre; et il lui souhaita toute sorte de prospérités. Il lui demanda ensuite: Est-ce que ton cœur est droit, comme mon cœur avec ton cœur? Et Jonadab répondit: m’est. S’il l’est, reprit-il, donne la main. Celui-ci lui donna sa main. Alors Jéhu le fit monter auprès de lui dans son char.
And whanne he hadde go fro thennus, he foond Jonadab, the sone of Rechab, in to meetyng of hym; and he blesside hym. And Hieu seide to hym, Whether thin herte is riytful with myn herte, as myn herte is with thin herte? And Jonadab seide, It is. Hieu seide, If `it is, yyue thin hond. Which yaf his hond to hym; and he reiside hym to hym silf in to the chare.
16 Et il lui dit: Viens avec moi, et vois mon zèle pour le Seigneur. Et l’ayant mis dans son char,
And he seide to hym, Come thou with me, and se my feruent loue for the Lord.
17 Il les conduisit à Samarie. Or il tua tous ceux qui étaient restés d’Achab à Samarie, jusqu’au dernier, selon la parole que le Seigneur avait dite par Elle.
And he ledde hym, put in hys chare, in to Samarie. And he killide alle men that weren residue of Achab in Samarie `til to oon, bi the word of the Lord, which he spak bi Elie.
18 Ensuite Jéhu assembla tout le peuple, et il leur dit: Achab a honoré un peu Baal; mais moi je l’honorerai davantage.
Therfor Hieu gaderide to gidere alle the puple, and seide to hem, Achab worschipide Baal a litil, but Y schal worschipe hym more.
19 Maintenant donc, appelez vers moi tous les prophètes de Baal, tous ses serviteurs et tous ses prêtres; qu’il n’y en ait aucun qui ne vienne; car c’est un grand sacrifice que je veux faire à Baal: quiconque y manquera, ne vivra plus. Or, Jéhu faisait cela insidieusement pour perdre les adorateurs de Baal;
Now therfor clepe ye to me alle the prophetis of Baal, and alle hise seruauntis, and alle hise preestis; `noon be that come not, for grete sacrifice is of me to Baal; who euer schal faile, he schal not lyue. Forsothe Hieu dide this bi tresoun, that he schulde distrie alle the worschipers of Baal.
20 Et il dit: Sanctifiez un jour solennel en l’honneur de Baal; et il y invita;
And he seide, Halewe ye a solempne day to Baal.
21 Il envoya donc dans tous les confins d’Israël, et tous les serviteurs de Baal vinrent, et il ne s’en trouva pas même un seul qui ne vint. Ainsi ils entrèrent dans le temple de Baal; et la maison de Baal fut remplie depuis une extrémité jusqu’à l’autre extrémité.
And he clepide, and sente in to alle the termes of Israel; and alle the seruauntis of Baal camen, `noon was residue, and sotheli `not oon was that cam not. And thei entriden in to the temple of Baal; and the hows of Baal was fillid, fro oon ende `til to `the tothir.
22 Il dit ensuite à ceux qui gardaient les vêtements: Apportez des vêtements à tous les serviteurs de Baal. Et ils leur apportèrent des vêtements.
And he seide to hem that weren souereyns ouer the clothis, Bringe ye forth clothis to alle the seruauntis of Baal; and thei brouyten forth clothis to hem.
23 Et Jéhu, étant entré avec Jonadab, fils de Réchab, dans le temple de Baal, dit aux adorateurs de Baal: Cherchez, et voyez que personne parmi vous ne soit des serviteurs du Seigneur; mais qu’il n’y ait que les seuls serviteurs de Baal.
And Hieu entride, and Jonadab, the sone of Rechab, in to the temple of Baal. And Hieu seide to the worschiperis of Baal, Enquere ye, and se, lest perauenture ony of the seruauntis of the Lord be with you; but that the seruauntis be aloone of Baal.
24 Ils entrèrent donc dans le temple pour sacrifier des victimes et des holocaustes: or Jéhu s’était préparé dehors quatre-vingts hommes, et il leur avait dit: Quiconque s’échappera d’entre les hommes que je remettrai moi-même en vos mains, l’âme de celui-ci sera pour l’âme de celui-là.
Therfor thei entriden, to make slayn sacrifices, and brent sacrifices. Sotheli Hieu hadde maad redi to hym with outforth foure scoore men, and hadde seid to hem, Who euer schal fle of alle these, whiche Y schal brynge in to youre hondis, the lijf of hym schal be for the lijf of hym that ascapith.
25 Il arriva donc que, lorsque l’holocauste eut été achevé, Jéhu donna cet ordre à ses soldats et à ses officiers: Entrez, tuez, et qu’aucun n’échappe. Et les officiers et les soldats les frappèrent du tranchant du glaive, et les jetèrent dehors; ensuite ils allèrent dans la ville où était le temple de Baal,
Forsothe it was don, whanne the brent sacrifice was fillid, Hieu comaundide to hise knyytis and duykis, Entre ye, and sle hem, that noon ascape. And the knyytis and duykis smytiden `hem bi the scharpnesse of swerd, and castiden forth. And `thei yeden into the citee of the temple of Baal,
26 Et ils enlevèrent la statue de Baal du temple, et ils la brûlèrent,
and thei brouyten forth the ymage fro the temple of Baal,
27 Et la réduisirent en poudre. Ils détruisirent aussi le temple de Baal, et firent à sa place des latrines qui ont subsisté jusqu’à ce jour.
and brenten it, and al to braken it. Also thei destrieden the hows of Baal, and maden priuyes for it `til in to this dai.
28 C’est ainsi que Jéhu extermina Baal du milieu d’Israël;
Therfor Hieu dide awei Baal fro Israel;
29 Mais quant aux péchés de Jéroboam, fils de Nabath, qui fit pécher Israël, il ne s’en écarta pas, et il n’abandonna pas les veaux d’or qui étaient à Béthel et à Dan.
netheles he yede not awei fro the synnes of Jeroboam, sone of Nabath, that made Israel to do synne, nether he forsook the goldun caluys, that weren in Bethel and in Dan.
30 Le Seigneur dit donc à Jéhu: Parce que tu as fait avec zèle ce qui était droit et plaisait à mes yeux, et que tout ce qui était en mon cœur, tu l’as fait contre la maison d’Achab, tes enfants, jusqu’à la quatrième génération, seront assis sur le trône d’Israël.
Forsothe the Lord seide to Hieu, For thou didist bisili that that was riytful, and pleside in myn yyen, and hast do ayens the hows of Achab alle thingis that weren in myn herte, thi sones `til to the fourthe generacioun schulen sitte on the trone of Israel.
31 Cependant Jéhu n’eut pas soin de marcher dans la loi du Seigneur Dieu d’Israël en tout son cœur, et il ne s’écarta par des péchés de Jéroboam, qui avait fait pécher Israël.
Forsothe Hieu kepte not, that he yede in the lawe of the Lord God of Israel in al his herte; for he yede not awei fro the synnes of Jeroboam, that made Israel to do synne.
32 En ces jours-là, le Seigneur commença à se lasser d’Israël, et Hazaël les battit sur toutes les frontières d’Israël,
In tho daies the Lord bigan to be anoyed on Israel; and Asahel smoot hem in alle the coostis of Israel,
33 Depuis le Jourdain, vers le côté oriental, ruinant toute la terre de Galaad, Gad, Ruben et Manassé, depuis Aroër, qui est sur le torrent d’Arnon, et Galaad, et Basan.
fro Jordan ayens the eest coost, al the lond of Galaad, and of Gad, and of Ruben, and of Manasses, fro Aroer which is on the stronde of Arnon, and Galaad, and Baasan.
34 Mais le reste des actions de Jéhu, tout ce qu’il a fait, et son courage, n’est-ce pas écrit dans le Livre des actions des jours des rois d’Israël?
Forsothe the residue of wordis of Hieu, and alle thingis whiche he dide, and his strengthe, whether these ben not writun in the book of wordis of daies of the kyngis of Israel?
35 Et Jéhu dormit avec ses pères, et on l’ensevelit à Samarie, et Joachaz, son fils, régna en sa place.
And Hieu slepte with hise fadris; and thei birieden hym in Samarie; and Joachaz, his sone, regnyde for hym.
36 Or les jours durant lesquels Jéhu régna sur Israël, en Samarie, furent de vingt-huit ans.
Forsothe the daies, in whiche Hieu regnede on Israel in Samarie, ben eiyte and twenti yeer.
