2 Chroniques 34

1 Josias avait huit ans lorsqu’il commença à régner, et il régna trente et un ans à Jérusalem,

Eight years old, was Josiah when he begun to reign, —and, thirty-one years, reigned he in Jerusalem.

2 Et il fit ce qui était droit en la présence du Seigneur, et il marcha dans les voies de David, son père, et il ne se détourna ni à droite ni à gauche.

And he did that which was right, in the eyes of Yahweh, —and walked in the ways of David his father, and turned not aside, to the right hand or to the left.

3 Or, la huitième année de son règne, quoiqu’il fût encore un enfant, il commença à chercher le Dieu de son père David; et, la douzième année après qu’il eut commencé à régner, il purifia Juda et Jérusalem des hauts lieux, des bois sacrés, des simulacres et des images taillées au ciseau.

And, in the eighth year of his reign, he, being yet a boy, he began to seek unto the God of David his father, -and, in the twelfth year, he began to purify Judah and Jerusalem, from the high places and the Sacred Stems, and the carved images and the molten images.

4 Et on détruisit devant lui les autels des Baalim, et quant aux simulacres qui avaient été posés dessus, on les démolit; les bois sacrés aussi, et les images taillées au ciseau, il les coupa, et les mit en pièces, puis il en dispersa les débris sur les tombeaux de ceux qui avaient accoutumé de leur immoler des victimes.

And they threw down before him, the altars of the Baalim, and, the sun-pillars which were on high above them, he hewed down, —and, the Sacred Stems and the carved images and the molten images, brake he in pieces and ground to dust, and tossed over the face of the graves, of them who had been sacrificing unto them.

5 Outre cela, il brûla les os des prêtres sur les autels des idoles, et il purifia Juda et Jérusalem.

And, the bones of the priests, burned he upon their altars, —and so purified Judah and Jerusalem:

6 Mais de plus, dans les villes de Manassé, d’Ephraïm et de Siméon, jusqu’à Nephthali, il renversa tout.

also throughout the cities of Manasseh and Ephraim and Simeon, even as far as Naphtali, —searched he their houses, round about.

7 Et lorsqu’il eut détruit les autels et les bois sacrés, brisé en morceaux les images taillées au ciseau, et démoli tous les temples dans toute la terre d’Israël, il revint à Jérusalem.

And, when he had thrown down the altars and the Sacred Stems, and, the images, he had beaten to powder, and, the sun-pillars, he had hewn down throughout all the land of Israel, then returned he to Jerusalem.

8 Ainsi, l’an dix-huit de son règne, la terre ayant été déjà purifiée, et le temple du Seigneur, il envoya Saphan, fils d’Esélie, et Maasias, prince de la ville, et Joha, fils de Joachaz, qui tenait les registres, pour réparer la maison du Seigneur son Dieu;

And, in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purified the land and the house, he sent Shaphan son of Azaliah and Maaseiah the ruler of the city and Joah son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of Yahweh his God.

9 Lesquels vinrent vers Helcias, le grand prêtre, et ayant reçu de lui l’argent qui avait été porté en la maison du Seigneur, et que les Lévites et les portiers avaient recueilli de Manassé et d’Ephraïm, de tous les restes d’Israël, de tout Juda aussi et de Benjamin, et des habitants de Jérusalem,

So they went in unto Hilkiah the high priest, and delivered the silver that had been brought into the house of God, which the Levites who kept the entrance-hall had collected from the hand of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and from all the remnant of Israel, and from all Judah and Benjamin, —and returned to Jerusalem.

10 Ils le remirent entre les mains de ceux qui présidaient aux ouvriers dans la maison du Seigneur, pour restaurer le temple et réparer toutes les ruines.

And the overseers in the house of Yahweh, delivered it into the hand of the doer of the work, —yea they delivered it to the doers of the work, because they were working in the house of Yahweh, in searching and repairing the house:

11 Mais ceux-ci le donnèrent aux ouvriers et aux tailleurs de pierres, afin qu’ils en achetassent des pierres des carrières, et des bois pour les assemblages de l’édifice et pour la charpente des maisons qu’avaient détruites les rois de Juda.

yea they delivered it to the artificers and to the builders, to buy carved stones and timbers for the joinings, —and to build up the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.

12 Et ils faisaient fidèlement toutes ces choses. Or étaient préposés à ceux qui travaillaient, Jahath et Abdias, d’entre les fils de Mérari; Zacharie et Mosollam, d’entre les fils de Caath, qui pressaient l’ouvrage; tous Lévites sachant jouer des instruments.

Now, the men, were working faithfully in the work, and over them as overseers, were—Jahath and Obadiah, Levites, of the sons of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to preside, —and Levites, all who had understanding in instruments of song;

13 Mais au-dessus de ceux qui portaient les fardeaux pour divers’ usages, étaient des scribes et des maîtres portiers d’entre les Lévites.

also over the burden-bearers, and such as took the lead, for everyone who was working in any manner of service, —and, of the Levites, were scribes and officers and doorkeepers.

14 Or, comme l’on transférait l’argent qui avait été déposé dans le temple du Seigneur, Helcias, le prêtre, trouva le livre de la loi du Seigneur, écrit de la main de Moïse.

Now, as they were taking out the silver which had been brought into the house of Yahweh, Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of Yahweh, by the hand of Moses.

15 Et il dit à Saphan, le scribe: J’ai trouvé le livre de la loi dans la maison du Seigneur, et il le lui remit.

Then spake up Hilkiah, and said unto Shaphan the scribe, The Book of the Law, have I found, in the house of Yahweh, —and Hilkiah gave the book unto Shaphan.

16 Et Saphan porta le volume au roi, et il lui annonça, disant: Tout ce que vous avez mis en la main de vos serviteurs, le voilà qui s’accomplit.

Then Shaphan took in the book unto the king, and returned yet further unto the king a message, saying, —All that was delivered into the hand of thy servants, they are doing;

17 Pour l’argent qui a été trouvé dans la maison du Seigneur, ils l’ont fondu; puis il a été donné aux préposés des ouvriers et de ceux qui font les divers ouvrages.

and they have poured out the silver, that was found in the house of Yahweh, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and into the hand of the doers of the work.

18 Outre cela Helcias, le prêtre, m’a remis ce livre. Lorsqu’il l’eut lu, le roi présent,

Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, A book, hath Hilkiah the priest given to me. And Shaphan, read therein, before the king.

19 Et lorsque le roi eut entendu les paroles de la loi, il déchira ses vêtements;

And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.

20 Et il ordonna à Helcias, à Ahicam, fils de Saphan, à Abdon, fils de Micha, à Saphan, le scribe, et à Asaas, serviteur du roi, disant:

Then did the king command Hilkiah—and Ahikam son of Shaphan—and Abdon son of Micah—and Shaphan the scribe—and Asaiah servant of the king, saying:

21 Allez, et priez le Seigneur pour moi et pour les restes d’Israël et de Juda, au sujet de toutes les paroles de ce livre qui a été trouvé; car la colère du Seigneur s’est épanchée sur nous, parce que nos pères n’ont point écouté les paroles du Seigneur, afin d’accomplir tout ce qui a été écrit dans ce volume.

Go, enquire of Yahweh for me, and for the remnant in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book which hath been found, —for great is the wrath of Yahweh, which hath been poured out upon us, because our fathers, kept not, the word of Yahweh, to do according to all that is written in this book.

22 Helcias donc s’en alla, et en même temps ceux qui avaient été envoyés par le roi vers Olda, la prophétesse, femme de Sellum, fils de Thécuath, fils de Hasra, le gardien des vêtements, laquelle demeurait à Jérusalem, dans la Seconde; et ils lui dirent les paroles rapportées plus haut.

So Hilkiah and they whom the king had named went into Huldah the prophetess, wife of Shallum son of Tokhath son of Hasrah keeper of the wardrobe, she, having her dwelling in Jerusalem, in the new city, —and they spake unto her accordingly.

23 Olda leur répondit: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël: Dites à l’homme qui vous a envoyés vers moi:

And she said unto them, Thus, saith Yahweh God of Israel, —Say ye unto the man who hath sent you unto me:

24 Le Seigneur dit ceci: Voilà que moi j’amènerai sur ce lieu et sur ses habitants des maux, et toutes les malédictions qui sont écrites dans ce livre qu’on a lu devant le roi de Juda;

Thus, saith Yahweh, Behold me bringing in calamity upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, -even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah:

25 Parce qu’ils m’ont abandonné, et qu’ils ont sacrifié à des dieux étrangers, pour me provoquer au courroux par toutes les œuvres de leurs mains, c’est pourquoi mon courroux s’épanchera sur ce lieu, et il ne s’apaisera point.

Because they have forsaken me, and burned incense unto other gods, so as to provoke me to anger, with all the works of their hands, therefore hath my wrath been poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched.

26 Quant au roi de Juda qui vous a envoyés pour implorer le Seigneur, vous lui direz: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d’Israël: Parce que tu as écouté les paroles de ce volume,

But, unto the king of Judah, who hath sent you to enquire of Yahweh, thus, shall ye say unto him, —Thus, saith Yahweh God of Israel, As touching the words which thou hast heard:

27 Que ton cœur a été attendri, que tu t’es humilié en la présence de Dieu, au sujet de ce qui a été dit contre ce lieu et les habitants de Jérusalem, que tu as révéré ma face, déchiré tes vêtements, et pleuré devant moi, moi aussi je t’ai exaucé, dit le Seigneur.

Because tender was thy heart, and thou didst humble thyself before God when thou heardest his words against this place and against the inhabitants thereof, and didst humble thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes and weep before me, therefore, I also, have heard, is the declaration of Yahweh.

28 Car bientôt je te réunirai à tes pères, et tu seras porté dans ta sépulture en paix, et tes yeux ne verront pas tout le mal que je vais amener sur cette ville et sur ses habitants. C’est pourquoi ils rapportèrent au roi tout ce qu’elle avait dit.

Behold me! gathering thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered unto thy sepulchres in peace, and thine eyes shall not look upon all the calamity which, I, am bringing in upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof. And they returned, unto the king, the message.

29 Or le roi, tous les anciens de Juda et de Jérusalem convoqués,

Then the king sent, —and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.

30 Monta à la maison du Seigneur, et aussi tous les hommes de Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem, les prêtres et les Lévites, et tout le peuple, depuis le plus petit jusqu’au plus grand; lesquels écoutant dans la maison du Seigneur, le roi lut toutes les paroles du volume;

And the king went up to the house of Yahweh—and all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem—and the priests and the Levites, and all the people, from the great even unto the small, —and he read in their ears, all the words of the book of the covenant, which had been found in the house of Yahweh.

31 Et, se tenant debout sur son tribunal, il fit l’alliance devant le Seigneur, afin qu’il marchât après lui, qu’il gardât ses préceptes, ses lois et ses ordonnances en tout son cœur et en toute son âme, et qu’il fît tout ce qui était écrit dans ce volume quil avait lu.

And the king stood in his place, and solemnised the covenant before Yahweh, to walk after Yahweh, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes, with all his heart and with all his soul, —to perform the words of the covenant that are written in this book.

32 Il adjura aussi à ce sujet tous ceux qui s’étaient trouvés dans Jérusalem et Benjamin: et les habitants de Jérusalem firent selon l’alliance du Seigneur Dieu de leurs pères.

And he caused to take a stand, all that were present in Jerusalem, and Benjamin, —and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.

33 Josias enleva donc toutes les abominations de toutes les contrées des enfants d’Israël, et il fit que tous ceux qui restaient encore en Israël servirent le Seigneur leur Dieu. Ainsi, durant tous ses jours, ils ne se séparèrent point du Seigneur Dieu de leurs pères.

And Josiah removed all the abominations, out of all the lands which belonged to the sons of Israel, and caused all that were present in Jerusalem to serve, yea to serve, Yahweh their God, —all his days, turned they not aside from following Yahweh, God of their fathers.
