Luc 2
1 En ce temps-là, on publia un édit de la part de César Auguste, ordonnant un recensement de toute la terre.
About that time an edict was issued by the Emperor Augustus that a census should be taken of the whole Empire.
2 Ce recensement fut le premier et eut lieu pendant que Quirinius était gouverneur de Syrie.
(This was the first census taken while Quirinius was Governor of Syria).
3 Et tous allaient se faire enregistrer, chacun dans sa ville.
And everyone went to his own town to be registered.
4 Joseph aussi monta de la Galilée en Judée, de la ville de Nazareth à la ville de David, nommée Bethléhem, — parce qu'il était de la maison et de la famille de David, —
Among others Joseph went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem, the town of David, in Judea – because he belonged to the family and house of David –
5 pour se faire enregistrer avec Marie, son épouse, qui était enceinte.
to be registered with Mary, his engaged wife, who was about to become a mother.
6 Pendant qu'ils étaient là, le jour où elle devait accoucher arriva.
While they were there her time came,
7 Elle mit au monde son fils premier-né, l'emmaillota et le coucha dans une crèche, parce qu'il n'y avait point de place pour eux dans l'hôtellerie.
and she gave birth to her first child, a son. And because there was no room for them in the inn, she swathed him around and laid him in a manger.
8 Or, il y avait dans la même contrée des bergers, qui couchaient dans les champs et gardaient leurs troupeaux pendant les veilles de la nuit.
In that same countryside were shepherds out in the open fields, watching their flocks that night,
9 Un ange du Seigneur se présenta à eux; la gloire du Seigneur resplendit autour d'eux, et ils furent saisis d'une grande crainte.
when an angel of the Lord suddenly stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were seized with fear.
10 Alors l'ange leur dit: Ne craignez point! Car voici que je vous annonce une bonne nouvelle, qui sera pour tout le peuple la cause d'une grande joie:
“Have no fear,” the angel said. “For I bring you good news of a great joy in store for all the nation.
11 c'est qu'aujourd'hui, dans la ville de David, un Sauveur, qui est le Christ, le Seigneur, vous est né.
This day there has been born to you, in the town of David, a Savior, who is Christ and Lord.
12 Et vous le reconnaîtrez à ce signe: vous trouverez un petit enfant emmailloté et couché dans une crèche.
And this will be the sign for you. You will find the infant swathed, and lying in a manger.”
13 Et tout à coup, il y eut avec l'ange une multitude de l'armée céleste, louant Dieu et disant:
Then suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly Host, praising God, and singing –
14 Gloire à Dieu au plus haut des cieux, paix sur la terre, bienveillance envers les hommes!
“glory to God on high, and on earth peace among those in whom he finds pleasure.”
15 Après que les anges les eurent quittés pour retourner au ciel, les bergers se dirent les uns aux autres: Allons jusqu'à Bethléhem; voyons ce qui est arrivé, ce que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître.
Now, when the angels had left them and gone back to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go at once to Bethlehem, and see this thing that has happened, of which the Lord has told us.”
16 Ils s'empressèrent donc d'y aller, et ils trouvèrent Marie, Joseph, et le petit enfant qui était couché dans la crèche.
So they went quickly, and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in a manger;
17 Après l'avoir vu, ils publièrent ce qui leur avait été dit de cet enfant.
and, when they saw it, they told of all that had been said to them about this child.
18 Tous ceux qui les entendirent étaient dans l'admiration de ce que les bergers leur disaient.
All who heard the shepherds were astonished at their story,
19 Et Marie conservait toutes ces paroles et les repassait dans son coeur.
while Mary treasured in her heart all that they said, and thought about it often.
20 Les bergers s'en retournèrent, glorifiant et louant Dieu de tout ce qu'ils avaient entendu et vu, conformément à ce qui leur avait été dit.
And the shepherds went back, giving glory and praise to God for all that they had heard and seen. It had all happened as they had been told.
21 Quand fut arrivé le huitième jour où l'on devait circoncire l'enfant, on lui donna le nom de Jésus, nom qui lui avait été donné par l'ange avant qu'il fût conçu dans le sein de sa mère.
Eight days after the birth of the child, when it was time to circumcise him, he received the name Jesus – the name given him by the angel before his conception.
22 Lorsque furent achevés les jours de leur purification selon la loi de Moïse, ils portèrent l'enfant à Jérusalem, pour le présenter au Seigneur,
When the period of purification of mother and child, required by the Law of Moses, came to an end, his parents took the child up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord,
23 — ainsi qu'il est écrit dans la loi du Seigneur: «Tout mâle premier-né sera consacré au Seigneur» —
in compliance with the Law of the Lord that every firstborn male will be dedicated to the Lord,
24 et pour offrir le sacrifice prescrit dans la loi du Seigneur: une paire de tourterelles ou deux pigeonneaux.
and also to offer the sacrifice required by the Law of the Lord – a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons.
25 Or, il y avait à Jérusalem un homme qui s'appelait Siméon. Cet homme était juste et pieux; il attendait la consolation d'Israël, et l'Esprit saint reposait sur lui.
There was at that time in Jerusalem a man named Simeon, a righteous and devout man, who lived in constant expectation of Israel’s consulation, and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
26 Il avait été averti divinement par le Saint-Esprit qu'il ne verrait point la mort avant d'avoir vu l'Oint du Seigneur.
It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not die until he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
27 Il vint donc au temple, poussé par l'Esprit; et comme les parents apportaient l'enfant Jésus, pour accomplir à son égard les prescriptions ordinaires de la loi,
Moved by the Spirit, Simeon came into the Temple Courts, and, when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the Law,
28 il le prit dans ses bras, bénit Dieu et dit:
Simeon himself took the child in his arms, and blessed God, and said:
29 Maintenant, Seigneur, tu laisses aller ton serviteur en paix, selon ta parole;
“Now, Lord, you will let your servant go, according to your word, in peace,
30 car mes yeux ont vu ton salut,
for my eyes have seen the salvation
31 que tu as préparé pour être, à la face de tous les peuples,
which you have prepared in the sight of all nations –
32 la lumière qui doit éclairer les nations et la gloire de ton peuple d'Israël.
a light to bring light to the Gentiles, and to be the glory of your people Israel.”
33 Son père et sa mère admiraient ce qu'on disait de lui.
While the child’s father and mother were wondering at what was said about him,
34 Et Siméon les bénit, et dit à Marie, sa mère: Voici que cet enfant est destiné à être une cause de chute et de relèvement pour plusieurs en Israël, et un signe qui provoquera la contradiction;
Simeon gave them his blessing, and said to Mary, the child’s mother, “This child is appointed to be the cause of the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign much spoken against –
35 à toi-même, une épée te transpercera l'âme. C'est ainsi que les pensées du coeur de plusieurs seront dévoilées.
Yes, the sword will pierce your own heart – and so the thoughts in many minds will be disclosed.”
36 Il y avait aussi une prophétesse, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d'Asser, qui était fort avancée en âge. Après avoir vécu, depuis sa virginité, sept ans avec son mari,
There was also a prophet named Hannah, a daughter of Phanuel and of the tribe of Asher. She was far advanced in years, having lived with her husband for seven years after marriage,
37 elle était restée veuve. Elle était alors âgée de quatre-vingt-quatre ans, et ne sortait point du temple, servant Dieu nuit et jour dans les jeûnes et les prières.
and then a widow, until she had reached the age of eighty-four. She never left the Temple Courts, but, fasting and praying, worshiped God night and day.
38 Elle aussi, étant survenue en ce même instant, louait Dieu, et elle parlait de l'enfant à tous ceux qui attendaient la délivrance de Jérusalem.
At that moment she came up, and began publicly to thank God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the deliverance of Jerusalem.
39 Après qu'ils eurent tout accompli selon la loi du Seigneur, ils retournèrent en Galilée, à Nazareth, leur ville.
When the child’s parents had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.
40 Le petit enfant grandissait et se fortifiait; il était rempli de sagesse, et la grâce de Dieu était sur lui.
The child grew and became strong and wise, and the blessing of God was on him.
41 Les parents de Jésus allaient tous les ans à Jérusalem, à la fête de Pâque.
Every year the child’s parents used to go to Jerusalem at the Passover Festival.
42 Quand il eut atteint l'âge de douze ans, ils montèrent à Jérusalem, selon la coutume de la fête.
When Jesus was twelve years old, they went according to custom to Jerusalem,
43 Les jours de la fête étant passés, comme ils s'en retournaient, l'enfant Jésus demeura à Jérusalem, et ses parents ne s'en aperçurent point.
and had finished their visit; but, when they started to return, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, without their knowing it.
44 Pensant qu'il était avec leurs compagnons de route, ils marchèrent toute une journée, et ils le cherchaient parmi leurs parents et ceux de leur connaissance;
Thinking that he was with their fellow travelers, they went one day’s journey before searching for him among their relatives and acquaintances;
45 mais, ne l'ayant pas trouvé, ils retournèrent à Jérusalem pour le chercher.
and then, as they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching everywhere for him.
46 Au bout de trois jours, ils le trouvèrent dans le temple, assis au milieu des docteurs, les écoutant et leur posant des questions;
It was not until the third day that they found him in the Temple Courts, sitting among the teachers, now listening to them, now asking them questions.
47 et tous ceux qui l'entendaient étaient ravis de son intelligence et de ses réponses.
All who listened to him marveled at his intelligence and his answers.
48 En le voyant, ils furent étonnés; et sa mère lui dit: Mon enfant, pourquoi as-tu agi de la sorte avec nous? Voici que ton père et moi nous te cherchions, étant fort en peine.
His parents were amazed when they saw him, and his mother said to him, “My child, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.”
49 Et il leur dit: Pourquoi me cherchiez-vous? Ne saviez-vous pas qu'il me faut être occupé des affaires de mon Père?
“What made you search for me?” he answered. “Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?”
50 Mais eux ne comprirent pas ce qu'il leur disait.
His parents did not understand what he meant.
51 Il s'en alla ensuite avec eux et vint à Nazareth; et il leur était soumis. Sa mère conservait toutes ces paroles dans son coeur.
However he went down with them to Nazareth, and submitted himself to their control; and his mother treasured all that was said in her heart.
52 Jésus croissait en sagesse, en stature et en grâce, devant Dieu et devant les hommes.
And Jesus grew in wisdom as he grew in years, and gained the blessing of God and people.
