Luc 16
1 Jésus disait aussi à ses disciples: Un homme riche avait un économe, qui fut accusé auprès de lui de dissiper ses biens.
Jesus said to his disciples: “There was a rich man who had a steward; and this steward was maliciously accused to him of wasting his estate.
2 Il le fit venir et lui dit: Qu'est-ce que j'entends dire de toi? Rends compte de ton administration; car tu ne pourras plus désormais administrer mes biens.
So the master called him and said ‘What is this that I hear about you? Give in your accounts, for you cannot act as steward any longer.’
3 L'économe se dit en lui-même: Que ferai-je, puisque mon maître m'ôte mon emploi? Travailler la terre, je n'en ai pas la force; et j'ai honte de mendier.
‘What am I to do,’ the steward asked himself, ‘now that my master is taking the steward’s place away from me? I have not strength to dig, and I am ashamed to beg.
4 Je sais ce que je ferai, afin que, quand j'aurai été renvoyé de mon emploi, il y ait des gens qui me reçoivent dans leurs maisons.
I know what I will do, so that, as soon as I am turned out of my stewardship, people may welcome me into their homes.’
5 Alors il fit venir séparément chacun des débiteurs de son maître, et il dit au premier: Combien dois-tu à mon maître?
One by one he called up his master’s debtors. ‘How much do you owe my master?’ he asked of the first.
6 Le débiteur répondit: Cent mesures d'huile. L'économe lui dit: Prends ton billet; assieds-toi là, et écris vite: Cinquante.
‘Four hundred and forty gallons of oil,’ answered the man. ‘Here is your agreement,’ he said; ‘sit down at once and make it two hundred and twenty.’
7 Il dit ensuite à un autre: Et toi, combien dois-tu? Celui-ci répondit: Cent mesures de froment. L'économe lui dit: Prends ton billet, et écris: Quatre-vingts.
And you, the steward said to the next, ‘how much do you owe?’ ‘Seventy quarters of wheat,’ he replied. ‘Here is your agreement,’ the steward said; ‘make it fifty-six.’
8 Le maître loua l'économe infidèle de ce qu'il avait agi avec prudence; car les enfants de ce siècle, dans leurs rapports avec les hommes de leur génération, sont plus prudents que les enfants de lumière. (aiōn g165)
His master complimented this dishonest steward on the shrewdness of his action. And indeed men of the world are shrewder in dealing with their fellow-men than those who have the Light. (aiōn g165)
9 Et moi, je vous le dis: Faites-vous des amis avec les richesses injustes, afin que, lorsqu'elles viendront à vous manquer, ils vous reçoivent dans les tabernacles éternels. (aiōnios g166)
And I say to you ‘Win friends for yourselves with your dishonest money,’ so that, when it comes to an end, there may be a welcome for you into the Eternal Home. (aiōnios g166)
10 Celui qui est fidèle dans les plus petites choses est aussi fidèle dans les grandes; et celui qui est injuste dans les plus petites choses est aussi injuste dans les grandes.
He who is trustworthy in the smallest matter is trustworthy in a great one also; and he who is dishonest in the smallest matter is dishonest in a great one also.
11 Si donc vous n'avez pas été fidèles dans les richesses injustes, qui vous confiera les véritables?
So, if you have proved untrustworthy with the ‘dishonest money,’ who will trust you with the true?
12 Et si vous n'avez pas été fidèles dans ce qui est à autrui, qui vous donnera ce qui est à vous?
And, if you have proved untrustworthy with what does not belong to us, who will give you what is really our own?
13 Nul serviteur ne peut servir deux maîtres; car, ou il haïra l'un et aimera l'autre, ou il s'attachera à l'un et méprisera l'autre. Vous ne pouvez servir Dieu et Mammon.
No servant can serve two masters, for, either he will hate one and love the other, or else he will attach himself to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”
14 Les pharisiens, qui aimaient l'argent, entendaient tout cela, et ils se moquaient de lui.
All this was said within hearing of the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, and they began to sneer at Jesus.
15 Il leur dit: Vous vous faites passer pour justes devant les hommes, mais Dieu connaît vos coeurs; car ce qui est élevé aux yeux des hommes est une abomination devant Dieu.
“You,” said Jesus, “are the men who justify themselves before the world, but God can read your hearts; and what is highly esteemed among men may be an abomination in the sight of God.
16 La loi et les prophètes ont duré jusqu'à Jean; depuis lors, le royaume de Dieu est annoncé, et chacun y entre par la violence.
The Law and the Prophets sufficed until the time of John. Since then the Good News of the Kingdom of God has been told, and everybody has been forcing his way into it.
17 Il est plus facile que le ciel et la terre passent, qu'il ne l'est qu'un seul trait de lettre de la loi vienne à tomber.
It would be easier for the heavens and the earth to disappear than for one stroke of a letter in the Law to be lost.
18 Quiconque répudie sa femme et en épouse une autre, commet un adultère, et celui qui épouse la femme répudiée par son mari, commet un adultère.
Every one who divorces his wife and marries another woman is an adulterer, and the man who marries a divorced woman is an adulterer.
19 Il y avait un homme riche, qui était vêtu de pourpre et de lin fin, et qui se traitait bien et magnifiquement tous les jours.
There was once a rich man, who dressed in purple robes and fine linen, and feasted every day in great splendour.
20 Il y avait aussi un pauvre, nommé Lazare, couché à la porte du riche et couvert d'ulcères.
Near his gateway there had been laid a beggar named Lazarus, who was covered with sores,
21 Il aurait bien voulu se rassasier de ce qui tombait de la table du riche; et même, les chiens venaient lécher ses ulcères.
and who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the very dogs came and licked his sores.
22 Or, il arriva que le pauvre mourut, et il fut porté par les anges dans le sein d'Abraham; le riche mourut aussi, et il fut enseveli.
After a time the beggar died, and was taken by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried.
23 Étant dans l'enfer et en proie aux tourments, il leva les yeux et vit de loin Abraham, et Lazare dans son sein. (Hadēs g86)
In the Place of Death he looked up in his torment, and saw Abraham at a distance and Lazarus at his side. (Hadēs g86)
24 Alors il s'écria: Père Abraham, aie pitié de moi et envoie Lazare, afin qu'il trempe dans l'eau le bout de son doigt et me rafraîchisse la langue; car je souffre beaucoup dans cette flamme.
So he called out ‘Pity me, Father Abraham, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering agony in this flame.’
25 Abraham lui répondit: Mon enfant, souviens-toi que tu as eu tes biens pendant ta vie, tandis que Lazare a eu des maux; maintenant, ici, il est consolé, et toi, tu es dans les tourments.
‘Child,’ answered Abraham, ‘remember that you in your lifetime received what you thought desirable, just as Lazarus received what was not desirable; but now he has his consolation here, while you are suffering agony.
26 D'ailleurs, entre nous et vous s'ouvre un grand abîme, de sorte que ceux qui voudraient aller d'ici vers vous ne le peuvent, non plus que ceux qui voudraient passer de là vers nous.
And not only that, but between you and us there lies a great chasm, so that those who wish to pass from here to you cannot, nor can they cross from there to us.’
27 Le riche dit: Je te prie donc, père, d'envoyer Lazare dans la maison de mon père,
‘Then, Father,’ he said, ‘I beg you to send Lazarus to my father’s house —
28 — car j'ai cinq frères, — pour qu'il leur atteste ces choses, de peur qu'eux aussi ne viennent dans ce lieu de tourments.
For I have five brothers to warn them, so that they may not come to this place of torture also.’
29 Abraham lui répondit: Ils ont Moïse et les prophètes; qu'ils les écoutent!
‘They have the writings of Moses and the Prophets,’ replied Abraham; ‘let them listen to them.’
30 Le riche reprit: Non, père Abraham; mais si quelqu'un des morts va vers eux, ils se repentiront.
‘But, Father Abraham,’ he urged, ‘if some one from the dead were to go to them, they would repent.’
31 Mais Abraham lui dit: S'ils n'écoutent pas Moïse et les prophètes, ils ne seraient pas non plus persuadés, quand même quelqu'un des morts ressusciterait.
‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets,’ answered Abraham, ‘they will not be persuaded, even if some one were to rise from the dead.’”
