Luc 14
1 Un jour de sabbat, Jésus était entré dans la maison d'un des principaux pharisiens pour prendre un repas, et ceux qui étaient là l'observaient.
On one occasion, as Jesus was going, on a Sabbath into the house of one of the leading Pharisees to dine, they were watching him closely.
2 Or, un homme hydropique se trouva devant lui.
There he saw before him a man who was suffering from dropsy.
3 Jésus, prenant la parole, dit aux docteurs de la loi et aux pharisiens: Est-il permis de guérir le jour du sabbat, ou non?
“Is it allowable,” said Jesus, addressing the Students of the Law and the Pharisees, “to work a cure on the Sabbath, or is it not?”
4 Et ils gardèrent le silence. Alors, prenant le malade, il le guérit et à le renvoya.
They remained silent. Jesus took hold of the man and cured him, and sent him away.
5 Puis il leur dit: Lequel d'entre vous, si son fils ou même son boeuf vient à tomber dans un puits, ne l'en retire aussitôt le jour du sabbat?
And he said to them: “Which of you, finding that his son or his ox has fallen into a well, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath Day?”
6 Et ils ne pouvaient rien répondre à cela.
And they could not make any answer to that.
7 Ayant remarqué que les conviés choisissaient les premières places, il leur disait aussi cette parabole:
Observing that the guests were choosing the best places for themselves, Jesus told them this parable —
8 Lorsqu'on t'invitera à des noces, ne te mets pas à la première place, de peur qu'il ne se trouve parmi les conviés une personne plus considérable que toi,
“When you are invited by any one to a wedding banquet, do not seat yourself in the best place, for fear that some one of higher rank should have been invited by your host;
9 et que celui qui vous a invités, toi et lui, ne vienne te dire: Cède la place à celui-ci! — et qu'alors, tu n'aies la honte d'être mis à la dernière place.
and he who invited you both will come and say to you ‘Make room for this man,’ and then you will begin in confusion to take the lowest place.
10 Mais quand tu seras invité, va te mettre à la dernière place, et lorsque celui qui t'a invité viendra, il te dira: Mon ami, monte plus haut! Alors, cela sera pour toi un honneur aux yeux de tous ceux qui seront à table avec toi.
No, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place, so that, when he who has invited you comes, he may say to you ‘Friend, come higher up’; and then you will be honoured in the eyes of all your fellow-guests.
11 Car quiconque s'élève sera abaissé, et quiconque s'abaisse sera élevé.
For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
12 Il disait aussi à celui qui l'avait invité: Quand tu donnes un dîner ou un souper, n'invite pas tes amis, ni tes frères, ni tes parents, ni des voisins riches, de peur qu'ils ne t'invitent à leur tour, et ne te rendent la pareille.
Then Jesus went on to say to the man who had invited him: “When you give a breakfast or a dinner, do not ask your friends, or your brothers, or your relations, or rich neighbours, for fear that they should invite you in return, and so you should be repaid.
13 Mais quand tu fais un festin, convie des pauvres, des estropiés, des boiteux et des aveugles.
No, when you entertain, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;
14 Tu seras heureux, parce qu'ils ne peuvent pas te le rendre; et cela te sera rendu à la résurrection des justes.
and then you will be happy indeed, since they cannot recompense you; for you shall be recompensed at the resurrection of the good.”
15 Un des convives, ayant entendu ces paroles, lui dit: Heureux celui qui sera à table dans le royaume de Dieu!
One of the guests heard what he said and exclaimed: “Happy will he be who shall eat bread in the Kingdom of God!”
16 Mais Jésus lui répondit: Un homme fit un grand souper, et il y invita beaucoup de gens.
But Jesus said to him: “A man was once giving a great dinner. He invited many people,
17 A l'heure du souper, il envoya son serviteur dire aux conviés: Venez; car tout est prêt.
and sent his servant, when it was time for the dinner, to say to those who had been invited ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’
18 Mais tous, comme de concert, se mirent à s'excuser. Le premier lui dit: J'ai acheté une terre et je suis forcé d'aller la voir; je te prie de m'excuser.
They all with one accord began to ask to be excused. The first man said to the servant ‘I have bought a field and am obliged to go and look at it. I must ask you to consider me excused.’
19 Un autre dit: J'ai acheté cinq paires de boeufs, et je vais les essayer; je te prie de m'excuser.
The next said ‘I have bought five pairs of bullocks, and I am on my way to try them. I must ask you to consider me excused’;
20 Un autre dit: Je viens de me marier; ainsi, je ne puis y aller.
while the next said ‘I am just married, and for that reason I am unable to come.’
21 Le serviteur, étant de retour, rapporta cela à son maître. Alors le père de famille, irrité, dit à son serviteur: Va vite sur les places et dans les rues de la ville, et amène ici les pauvres, les estropiés, les aveugles et les boiteux.
On his return the servant told his master all these answers. Then in anger the owner of the house said to his servant ‘Go out at once into the streets and alleys of the town, and bring in here the poor, and the crippled, and the blind, and the lame.’
22 Le serviteur vint dire: Seigneur, on a fait ce que tu as commandé, et il y a encore de la place.
Presently the servant said ‘Sir, your order has been carried out, and still there is room.’
23 Et le maître répondit au serviteur: Va dans les chemins et le long des haies, et contrains les gens d'entrer, afin que ma maison soit remplie.
‘Go out,’ the master said, ‘into the roads and hedgerows, and make people come in, so that my house may be filled;
24 Car, je vous le déclare, aucun de ces hommes qui avaient été conviés ne goûtera de mon souper.
for I tell you all that not one of those men who were invited will taste my dinner.’”
25 Comme une grande foule accompagnait Jésus, il se tourna vers elle et lui dit:
One day, when great crowds of people were walking with Jesus, he turned and said to them:
26 Si quelqu'un vient à moi, et ne hait pas son père, sa mère, sa femme, ses enfants, ses frères, ses soeurs, et même sa propre vie, il ne peut être mon disciple.
“If any man comes to me and does not hate his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, yes and his very life, he can be no disciple of mine.
27 Et quiconque ne porte pas sa croix et ne me suit pas, ne peut être mon disciple.
Whoever does not carry his own cross, and walk in my steps, can be no disciple of mine.
28 En effet, quel est celui d'entre vous, qui, voulant bâtir une tour, ne commence d'abord par s'asseoir, et ne calcule la dépense, pour voir s'il a de quoi aller jusqu'au bout,
Why, which of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and reckon the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it? —
29 — de peur qu'après avoir posé les fondements, il ne puisse achever la tour, et qu'alors tous ceux qui le verront ne se mettent à se moquer de lui,
For fear that, if he has laid the foundation and is not able to finish it, every one who sees it should begin to laugh at him,
30 en disant: Cet homme a commencé à bâtir, et il n'a pu achever!
and say ‘Here is a man who began to build and was not able to finish!’
31 Ou bien, quel est le roi qui, partant pour faire la guerre à un autre roi, ne commence par s'asseoir, et n'examine s'il peut, avec dix mille hommes, aller à la rencontre de celui qui vient contre lui avec vingt mille?
Or what king, when he is setting out to fight another king, does not first sit down and consider if with ten thousand men he is able to meet one who is coming against him with twenty thousand?
32 Autrement, pendant que celui-ci est encore loin, il lui envoie une ambassade pour demander la paix.
And if he cannot, then, while the other is still at a distance, he sends envoys and asks for terms of peace.
33 Ainsi, quiconque d'entre vous ne renonce pas à tout ce qu'il possède, ne peut être mon disciple.
And so with every one of you who does not bid farewell to all he has — he cannot be a disciple of mine.
34 C'est une bonne chose que le sel; mais si le sel perd sa saveur, avec quoi l'assaisonnera-t-on?
Yes, salt is good; but, if the salt itself should lose its strength, what shall be used to season it?
35 Il n'est bon ni pour la terre, ni pour le fumier; on le jette dehors. Que celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre, entende!
It is not fit either for the land or for the manure heap. Men throw it away. Let him who has ears to hear with hear!”
