Luc 1
1 Plusieurs ayant entrepris d'écrire l'histoire des faits accomplis parmi nous,
Forasmuch as many have undertaken to draw up a relation concerning the matters fully believed among us,
2 — tels que nous les ont transmis ceux qui en ont été, dès le commencement, les témoins oculaires, et qui sont devenus ministres de la Parole,
as those who from the beginning were eye-witnesses of and attendants on the Word have delivered them to us,
3 — j'ai cru bon, moi aussi, très excellent Théophile, de te les exposer par écrit et dans leur ordre, après m'être exactement informé de tout, depuis l'origine,
it has seemed good to me also, accurately acquainted from the origin with all things, to write to thee with method, most excellent Theophilus,
4 afin que tu reconnaisses la solidité des enseignements que tu as reçus.
that thou mightest know the certainty of those things in which thou hast been instructed.
5 Au temps d'Hérode, roi de Judée, il y avait un sacrificateur nommé Zacharie, de la classe d'Abia; sa femme était de la race d'Aaron et s'appelait Élisabeth.
There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the course of Abia, and his wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elizabeth.
6 Ils étaient tous deux justes devant Dieu, et ils suivaient tous les commandements et toutes les prescriptions du Seigneur d'une manière irréprochable.
And they were both just before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
7 Ils n'avaient point d'enfants, parce qu'Elisabeth était stérile; et ils étaient tous deux avancés en âge.
And they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years.
8 Or, il arriva, comme Zacharie remplissait devant Dieu les fonctions du sacerdoce, suivant le rang de sa classe,
And it came to pass, as he fulfilled his priestly service before God in the order of his course,
9 qu'il fut appelé par le sort, d'après la coutume établie parmi les sacrificateurs, à entrer dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur pour y offrir le parfum.
it fell to him by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter into the temple of the Lord to burn incense.
10 Toute la multitude du peuple était dehors en prière, à l'heure où le parfum était offert.
And all the multitude of the people were praying without at the hour of incense.
11 Alors un ange du Seigneur lui apparut, debout à droite de l'autel des parfums.
And an angel of [the] Lord appeared to him, standing on the right of the altar of incense.
12 Zacharie, en le voyant, fut troublé, et la frayeur le saisit.
And Zacharias was troubled, seeing [him], and fear fell upon him.
13 Mais l'ange lui dit: Ne crains point, Zacharie; car ta prière a été exaucée. Elisabeth, ta femme, t'enfantera un fils, et tu lui donneras le nom de Jean.
But the angel said to him, Fear not, Zacharias, because thy supplication has been heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14 Il sera pour toi un sujet de joie et d'allégresse, et plusieurs se réjouiront de sa naissance.
And he shall be to thee joy and rejoicing, and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15 En effet, il sera grand devant le Seigneur; il ne boira ni vin ni cervoise, et il sera rempli du Saint-Esprit dès le sein de sa mère.
For he shall be great before [the] Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with [the] Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.
16 Il convertira plusieurs des fils d'Israël au Seigneur, leur Dieu;
And many of the sons of Israel shall he turn to [the] Lord their God.
17 et lui-même marchera devant le Seigneur, dans l'esprit et avec la puissance d'Élie, pour ramener les coeurs des pères vers les enfants, et les rebelles à la sagesse des justes, afin de préparer au Seigneur un peuple bien disposé.
And he shall go before him in [the] spirit and power of Elias, to turn hearts of fathers to children, and disobedient ones to [the] thoughts of just [men], to make ready for [the] Lord a prepared people.
18 Zacharie dit à l'ange: A quoi reconnaîtrai-je cela? Car je suis vieux, et ma femme est avancée en âge.
And Zacharias said to the angel, How shall I know this, for I am an old man, and my wife advanced in years?
19 L'ange lui répondit: Je suis Gabriel, qui me tiens devant Dieu; j'ai été envoyé pour te parler et t'annoncer cette bonne nouvelle.
And the angel answering, said to him, I am Gabriel, who stand before God, and I have been sent to speak to thee, and to bring these glad tidings to thee;
20 Voici que tu vas devenir muet, et tu ne pourras parler jusqu'au jour où ces choses arriveront, parce que tu n'as pas cru à mes paroles, qui s'accompliront en leur temps.
and behold, thou shalt be silent and not able to speak, till the day in which these things shall take place, because thou hast not believed my words, the which shall be fulfilled in their time.
21 Cependant, le peuple attendait Zacharie, et s'étonnait de ce qu'il s'attardait dans le sanctuaire.
And the people were awaiting Zacharias, and they wondered at his delaying in the temple.
22 Quand il sortit, Zacharie ne pouvait leur parler; et ils comprirent qu'il avait eu quelque vision dans le sanctuaire; il leur faisait des signes, et il demeura muet.
But when he came out he could not speak to them, and they recognised that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he was making signs to them, and continued dumb.
23 Lorsque les jours de son ministère furent achevés, il retourna dans sa maison.
And it came to pass, when the days of his service were completed, he departed to his house.
24 Quelque temps après, Elisabeth sa femme, devint enceinte; elle se tint cachée durant cinq mois, et elle disait:
Now after these days, Elizabeth his wife conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
25 Voilà ce que le Seigneur m'a fait, quand il a jeté les yeux sur moi, pour ôter l'opprobre qui pesait sur moi parmi les hommes.
Thus has [the] Lord done to me in [these] days in which he looked upon [me] to take away my reproach among men.
26 Au sixième mois. Dieu envoya l'ange Gabriel dans une ville de Galilée, appelée Nazareth,
But in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent of God to a city of Galilee, of which [the] name [was] Nazareth,
27 auprès d'une vierge fiancée à un homme nommé Joseph, de la maison de David; cette vierge s'appelait Marie.
to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name [was] Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name [was] Mary.
28 L'ange, étant entré dans le lieu où elle était, lui dit: Je te salue, toi qui as été comblée de grâces; le Seigneur est avec toi.
And the angel came in to her, and said, Hail, [thou] favoured one! the Lord [is] with thee: [blessed art thou amongst women].
29 Elle fut troublée de ces paroles, et elle se demandait ce que signifiait cette salutation.
But she, [seeing] [the angel], was troubled at his word, and reasoned in her mind what this salutation might be.
30 Alors l'ange lui dit: Ne crains point, Marie; car tu as trouvé grâce devant Dieu.
And the angel said to her, Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God;
31 Voici que tu enfanteras et mettras au monde un fils, à qui tu donneras le nom de Jésus.
and behold, thou shalt conceive in the womb and bear a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus.
32 Il sera grand, et il sera appelé le Fils du Très-Haut; et le Seigneur, Dieu, lui donnera le trône de David, son père.
He shall be great, and shall be called Son of [the] Highest; and [the] Lord God shall give him the throne of David his father;
and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for the ages, and of his kingdom there shall not be an end. (aiōn g165)
34 Alors Marie dit à l'ange: Comment cela arrivera-t-il, puisque je ne connais point d'homme?
But Mary said to the angel, How shall this be, since I know not a man?
35 L'ange lui répondit: L'Esprit saint viendra sur toi, et la puissance du Très-Haut te couvrira de son ombre; c'est pourquoi aussi, le saint enfant qui naîtra sera appelé le Fils de Dieu.
And the angel answering said to her, [The] Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and power of [the] Highest overshadow thee, wherefore the holy thing also which shall be born shall be called Son of God.
36 Et voici qu'Elisabeth, ta parente, a aussi conçu un fils en sa vieillesse; c'est ici le sixième mois de celle qui était appelée stérile.
And behold, Elizabeth, thy kinswoman, she also has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month to her that was called barren:
37 Car rien n'est impossible à Dieu!
for nothing shall be impossible with God.
38 Marie répondit: Me voici: je suis la servante du Seigneur. Qu'il me soit fait selon ta parole! Puis l'ange la quitta.
And Mary said, Behold the bondmaid of [the] Lord; be it to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
39 En ces jours-là, Marie, s'étant levée, s'empressa d'aller dans le pays des montagnes, dans, une ville de Juda.
And Mary, rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste, to a city of Judah,
40 Elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie, et salua Elisabeth.
and entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elizabeth.
41 Or il arriva, quand Elisabeth eut entendu la salutation de Marie, que le petit enfant tressaillit dans son sein; et Elisabeth fut remplie du Saint-Esprit.
And it came to pass, as Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with [the] Holy Spirit,
42 Alors élevant la voix, elle s'écria: Tu es bénie entre les femmes, et le fruit de tes entrailles est béni.
and cried out with a loud voice and said, Blessed [art] thou amongst women, and blessed the fruit of thy womb.
43 Et d'où me vient cet honneur, que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne me visiter?
And whence [is] this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 Car ta voix, quand tu m'as saluée, n'a pas plus tôt frappé mes oreilles, que le petit enfant a tressailli de joie dans mon sein.
For behold, as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the babe leaped with joy in my womb.
45 Bienheureuse est celle qui a cru; car ce qui lui a été dit de la part du Seigneur aura son accomplissement!
And blessed [is] she that has believed, for there shall be a fulfilment of the things spoken to her from [the] Lord.
46 Alors Marie dit: Mon âme magnifie le Seigneur,
And Mary said, My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 et mon esprit se réjouit en Dieu, qui est mon Sauveur,
and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 parce qu'il a jeté les yeux sur la bassesse de sa servante. Et voici que désormais tous les âges m'appelleront bienheureuse;
For he has looked upon the low estate of his bondmaid; for behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 car le Tout-Puissant a fait pour moi de grandes choses. Son nom est saint,
For the Mighty One has done to me great things, and holy [is] his name;
50 et sa miséricorde s'étend d'âge en âge sur ceux qui le craignent.
and his mercy [is] to generations and generations to them that fear him.
51 Il a manifesté la vigueur de son bras. Il a dissipé les desseins que les orgueilleux formaient dans leur coeur.
He has wrought strength with his arm; he has scattered haughty [ones] in the thought of their heart.
52 Il a renversé de leurs trônes les puissants, et il a élevé les humbles.
He has put down rulers from thrones, and exalted the lowly.
53 Il a comblé de biens les affamés, et il a renvoyé les riches les mains vides.
He has filled the hungry with good things, and sent away the rich empty.
54 Il est venu au secours d'Israël, son serviteur, et il s'est souvenu de sa miséricorde
He has helped Israel his servant, in order to remember mercy,
55 — ainsi qu'il en avait parlé à nos pères — à l'égard d'Abraham et de sa postérité, pour toujours. (aiōn g165)
(as he spoke to our fathers, ) to Abraham and to his seed for ever. (aiōn g165)
56 Marie demeura avec Elisabeth environ trois mois; puis elle s'en retourna dans sa maison.
And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her house.
57 Cependant, le terme d'Elisabeth étant venu, elle enfanta un fils.
But the time was fulfilled for Elizabeth that she should bring forth, and she gave birth to a son.
58 Ses voisins et ses parents, ayant appris que le Seigneur avait fait éclater en elle la grandeur de sa miséricorde, s'en réjouissaient avec elle.
And her neighbours and kinsfolk heard that [the] Lord had magnified his mercy with her, and they rejoiced with her.
59 Le huitième jour, ils vinrent pour circoncire l'enfant; ils l'appelaient Zacharie, du nom de son père.
And it came to pass on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called it after the name of his father, Zacharias.
60 Mais sa mère dit: Non! Il sera nommé Jean.
And his mother answering said, No; but he shall be called John.
61 Ils lui dirent: Il n'y a personne dans ta famille qui soit appelé de ce nom.
And they said to her, There is no one among thy kinsfolk who is called by this name.
62 Alors ils demandèrent au père, par signes, comment il voulait que l'enfant fût nommé.
And they made signs to his father as to what he might wish it to be called.
63 Zacharie ayant demandé des tablettes, écrivit: Jean est son nom. Et ils furent tous surpris.
And having asked for a writing-table, he wrote saying, John is his name. And they all wondered.
64 A l'instant sa bouche s'ouvrit, sa langue se délia, et il parlait, bénissant Dieu.
And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue, and he spake, blessing God.
65 Tous leurs voisins furent remplis de crainte, et l'on s'entretenait de toutes ces choses dans tout le pays des montagnes de la Judée.
And fear came upon all who dwelt round about them; and in the whole hill-country of Judaea all these things were the subject of conversation.
66 Tous ceux qui les entendirent les conservèrent dans leur coeur et ils disaient: Que deviendra donc ce petit enfant? Car la main du Seigneur était avec lui.
And all who heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, What then will this child be? And [the] Lord's hand was with him.
67 Alors Zacharie, son père, fut rempli de l'Esprit saint. Il prophétisa et il dit:
And Zacharias his father was filled with [the] Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,
68 Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël, de ce qu'il a visité et racheté son peuple,
Blessed be [the] Lord the God of Israel, because he has visited and wrought redemption for his people,
69 et nous a suscité un puissant Sauveur dans la maison de David, son serviteur,
and raised up a horn of deliverance for us in the house of David his servant;
70 comme il l'avait proclamé par la bouche de ses saints prophètes, dès les anciens temps. (aiōn g165)
as he spoke by [the] mouth of his holy prophets, who have been since the world began; (aiōn g165)
71 Il nous délivre de nos ennemis et de la main de tous ceux qui nous haïssent.
deliverance from our enemies and out of the hand of all who hate us;
72 Il exerce sa miséricorde envers nos pères et se souvient de sa sainte alliance;
to fulfil mercy with our fathers and remember his holy covenant,
73 car il a fait à Abraham, notre père, le serment de nous accorder cette grâce,
[the] oath which he swore to Abraham our father,
74 qu'après avoir été délivrés de la main de nos ennemis, nous pourrions le servir sans crainte,
to give us, that, saved out of the hand of our enemies, we should serve him without fear
75 en sa présence, dans la sainteté et la justice, tous les jours de notre vie.
in piety and righteousness before him all our days.
76 Et toi, petit enfant, tu seras appelé le prophète du Très-Haut; car tu marcheras devant la face du Seigneur, pour préparer ses voies,
And thou, child, shalt be called [the] prophet of [the] Highest; for thou shalt go before the face of [the] Lord to make ready his ways;
77 pour donner à son peuple la connaissance du salut par la rémission de ses péchés.
to give knowledge of deliverance to his people by [the] remission of their sins
78 Les entrailles de la miséricorde de notre Dieu se sont émues, et le soleil levant nous a visités d'en haut,
on account of [the] bowels of mercy of our God; wherein [the] dayspring from on high has visited us,
79 pour éclairer ceux qui sont assis dans les ténèbres et l'ombre de la mort, et pour conduire nos pas dans le chemin de la paix.
to shine upon them who were sitting in darkness and in [the] shadow of death, to guide our feet into [the] way of peace.
80 Or, le petit enfant grandissait et se fortifiait en esprit; et il demeura dans les déserts jusqu'au jour de sa manifestation à Israël.
— And the child grew and was strengthened in spirit; and he was in the deserts until the day of his shewing to Israel.
