Luc 18
1 Il leur raconta une parabole pour leur montrer qu'il faut prier toujours, et ne point se lasser:
Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and never despair.
2 «Dans une certaine ville, dit-il, il y avait un juge qui n'avait ni crainte de Dieu, ni égards pour les hommes.
“There was,” he said, “in a certain town a judge, who had no fear of God nor regard for people.
3 Or, dans cette même ville, il y avait une veuve qui venait à lui et lui disait: «Fais-moi justice de mon adversaire.»
In the same town there was a widow who went to him again and again, and said ‘Grant me justice against my opponent.’
4 Pendant longtemps, il ne le voulut pas.» «Enfin il se dit à lui-même: «Bien que je n'aie ni crainte de Dieu, ni égards pour les hommes,
For a time the judge refused, but afterward he said to himself ‘Although I am without fear of God or regard for people,
5 comme il est certain que cette veuve-là m'est à charge, je lui ferai justice, de peur qu'elle ne finisse par se livrer à quelque violence.»
yet, as this widow is so troublesome, I will grant her justice, to stop her from plaguing me with her endless visits.’”
6 Vous entendez, ajouta le Seigneur, ce que dit ce juge inique.
Then the Master added, “Listen to what this iniquitous judge says!
7 Et Dieu ne ferait point justice à ses élus qui crient à lui nuit et jour? Il tarderait à les secourir?
And God – won’t he see that his own people, who cry to him night and day, have justice done them – though he holds his hand?
8 Il leur fera prompte justice, je vous le déclare; mais le Fils de l'homme, à son retour, trouvera-t-il la foi sur la terre?»
He will, I tell you, give them justice soon enough! Yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
9 Il raconta aussi la parabole suivante à quelques-uns très convaincus, à part eux, qu'ils étaient justes, et qui méprisaient les autres:
Another time, speaking to people who were satisfied that they were religious, and who regarded everyone else with scorn, Jesus told this parable –
10 «Deux hommes montèrent au Temple pour prier; l'un Pharisien et l'autre publicain.
“Two men went up into the Temple Courts to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other a tax-gatherer.
11 Le Pharisien, debout, priait ainsi en lui-même: «O Dieu, je te rends grâces de ce que je ne suis pas comme le reste des hommes, gens rapaces, iniques, adultères, de ce que je ne suis pas comme ce publicain-là.
The Pharisee stood forward and began praying to himself in this way – ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men – thieves, rogues, adulterers – or even like this tax-gatherer.
12 Je jeûne deux fois par semaine; je donne la dîme de tout ce que j'acquiers.»
I fast twice a week, and give a tenth of everything I get to God.’
13 Quant au publicain, il se tenait à distance, il n'osait pas même lever les yeux vers le ciel, mais il se frappait la poitrine en disant: «Dieu, aie pitié de moi qui suis un pécheur!»
Meanwhile the tax-gatherer stood at a distance, not venturing even to raise his eyes to heaven, but he kept striking his breast and saying ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’
14 Celui-ci, je vous le déclare, rentra dans sa maison justifié, plutôt que l'autre; car quiconque s'élève lui-même sera abaissé, et quiconque s'abaisse lui-même sera élevé.»
This man, I tell you, went home pardoned, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, while everyone who humbles himself will be exalted.”
15 On lui apportait même les tout petits enfants pour qu'il les touchât. Voyant cela, les disciples blâmèrent ceux qui les lui apportaient.
Some of the people were bringing even their babies to Jesus, for him to touch them; but, when the disciples saw it, they began to find fault with those who had brought them.
16 Mais Jésus appela ces enfants: «Laissez, leur dit-il, les enfants venir à moi, et ne les en empêchez pas, car c'est à ceux qui leur ressemblent qu'appartient le Royaume de Dieu.
Jesus, however, called the little children to him. “Let the little children come to me,” he said, “and do not hinder them, for it is to the childlike that the kingdom of God belongs.
17 En vérité, je vous le dis, qui ne recevra pas, comme un enfant, le Royaume de Dieu, n'y entrera pas.»
I tell you, unless a man receives the kingdom of God like a child, he will not enter it at all.”
18 Un chef de synagogue lui posa une question: «Bon maître, lui dit-il, que dois-je faire pour acquérir la vie éternelle?» (aiōnios g166)
And one of the leaders asked Jesus this question – “Good teacher, what must I do if I am to gain eternal life?” (aiōnios g166)
19 Jésus lui dit: «Pourquoi m'appelles-tu bon? Nul n'est bon que Dieu seul!
“Why do you call me good?” answered Jesus. “No one is good but God.
20 Tu connais les commandements: «Tu ne seras point adultère; tu ne seras point meurtrier; tu ne seras point voleur; tu ne rendras point de faux témoignages; honore ton père et ta mère.»
You know the commandments – Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not say what is false about others, Honor your father and your mother.”
21 Il répondit: «Tout cela je l'ai observé dès ma jeunesse.»
“I have observed all these,” he replied, “from childhood.”
22 Sur cette réponse, Jésus reprit: «Une chose te manque encore; vends tout ce que tu as; distribues-en le prix à des pauvres; tu auras alors un trésor dans les cieux; viens ensuite et suis-moi.»
Hearing this, Jesus said to him, “There is one thing still lacking in you; sell everything that you have, and distribute to the poor, and you will have wealth in heaven; then come and follow me.”
23 A ces mots, l'autre devint tout triste, car il était fort riche.
But the man became greatly distressed on hearing this, for he was extremely rich.
24 Voyant sa tristesse, Jésus dit: «Combien difficilement entreront dans le Royaume de Dieu ceux qui ont des richesses!
Seeing this, Jesus said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!
25 Il est plus facile à un chameau de passer par l'ouverture d'une aiguille qu'à un riche d'entrer dans le Royaume de Dieu.»
It is easier, indeed, for a camel to get through a needle’s eye than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God!”
26 «Qui donc pourra être sauvé?» dirent-ils en l'entendant.
“Then who can be saved?” asked those who heard this.
27 Jésus répondit: «Ce qui est impossible aux hommes, est possible à Dieu.» —
But Jesus said, “What is impossible with people is possible with God.”
28 «Et nous, dit Pierre, c'est après avoir laissé tous nos biens, que nous t'avons suivi!»
“But we,” said Peter, “we left what belonged to us and followed you.”
29 Il leur répondit: «Je vous le dis en vérité: personne, à cause du Royaume de Dieu, ne quittera une maison, une femme, des frères, des parents, des enfants,
“I tell you,” he answered, “that there is no one who has left house, or wife, or brothers, or parents, or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God,
31 Prenant à part les douze, il leur dit: «Voilà que nous montons à Jérusalem et tout ce que les prophètes ont écrit du Fils de l'homme va s'accomplir:
Gathering the Twelve around him, Jesus said to them, “Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem; and there everything that is written in the prophets will be done to the Son of Man.
32 il sera livré aux païens, bafoué, outragé, couvert de crachats;
For he will be given up to the Gentiles, mocked, insulted and spat on;
33 après l'avoir flagellé, ils le tueront, et le troisième jour il ressuscitera.»
they will scourge him, and then put him to death; and on the third day he will rise again.”
34 A cela les disciples ne comprirent rien; le sens de ces paroles leur était caché; ils ne saisissaient pas ce qui leur était dit.
The apostles did not comprehend any of this. His meaning was unintelligible to them and they did not understand what he was saying.
35 Il approchait de Jéricho. Un aveugle, assis au bord du chemin, mendiait.
As Jesus was getting near Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside, begging.
36 Entendant le bruit d'une foule en marche, il demanda ce que c'était.
Hearing a crowd going by, the man asked what was the matter;
37 On lui répondit: «C'est Jésus de Nazareth qui passe.»
and, when people told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing,
38 Alors il s'écria: «Jésus, Fils de David, aie pitié de moi!»
he shouted out, “Jesus, Son of David, take pity on me!”
39 Ceux qui étaient en avant le menaçaient pour le faire taire, mais lui n'en criait que plus fort: «Fils de David, aie pitié de moi!»
Those who were in front kept telling him to be quiet, but he continued to call out the louder, “Son of David, take pity on me!”
40 Jésus s'arrêta et donna l'ordre de le lui amener. Quand l'homme fut près de lui, il lui demanda:
Then Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. And, when he had come close up to him, Jesus asked him,
41 «Que veux-tu que je fasse pour toi?» — «Seigneur, que j'y voie!» répondit l'aveugle.
“What do you want me to do for you?” “Master,” he said, “I want to recover my sight.”
42 Alors Jésus lui dit: «Vois! ta foi t'a sauvé!»
And Jesus said, “Recover your sight, your faith has delivered you.”
43 Immédiatement il vit, et il suivit Jésus en glorifiant Dieu. Tout le peuple, à ce spectacle, célébra les louanges de Dieu.
Instantly he recovered his sight, and began to follow Jesus, praising God. And all the people, on seeing it, gave glory to God.
