Luc 14
1 Jésus était entré dans la maison d'un des principaux Pharisiens, pour y prendre un repas; c'était un jour de sabbat. Aussi chacun l'observait-il,
It happened on the Sabbath Day when he went into the house of a certain ruler among Pharisees to take a meal, that they were watching him.
2 car il y avait là, devant lui, un homme hydropique.
And lo! there was in front of him a man who had dropsy.
3 Jésus s'adressa aux légistes et aux Pharisiens. «Est-il permis, oui ou non, de guérir le jour du sabbat?» leur demanda-t-il. Ils gardèrent le silence.
So Jesus questioned the lawyers and the Pharisees, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath Day or not?"
4 Alors il toucha de la main l'hydropique, le guérit et le congédia.
They kept silent. Then Jesus took him and healed him and let him go.
5 Puis, s'adressant toujours à eux, il dit: «Lequel d'entre vous, si son fils ou son boeuf vient à tomber dans un puits, un jour de sabbat, ne l'en retire aussitôt?»
And to them he said, "Which of you when an ox or ass has fallen into a well, will at once pull him out on the Sabbath Day?"
6 A cela ils ne surent que répondre.
They could not answer this.
7 Ayant remarqué que les convives choisissaient les premières places, il leur raconta une parabole:
He told a parable to the guests when he noticed how they began choosing the best seats. He said to them.
8 «Quand tu seras invité par quelqu'un à des noces, dit-il, ne va pas t'installer à la première place, de peur qu'un personnage plus considérable que toi, se trouvant parmi les invités,
"When you are invited by any one to a marriage-feast, do not sit down in the best seat, lest a guest more distinguished than yourself has been invited, and your host come to you and say,
9 celui qui vous a conviés l'un et l'autre ne vienne te dire: «Donne-lui ta place» et que tu n'aies alors la confusion d'aller occuper la dernière place.
"‘Give place to this man,’ and then with mortification you proceed to take the lowest place.
10 Tout au contraire, quand tu seras invité, va te mettre à la dernière place, et alors, quand arrivera celui qui t'a invité, il te dira: «Mon ami, monte plus haut.» Ce sera pour toi un honneur devant tous les convives;
"But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when your host arrives he may say to you, ‘My friend, come up higher.’ Then you will be honored before the other guest.
11 car quiconque s'élève lui-même sera abaissé, et quiconque s'abaisse lui-même sera élevé.»
"For every one who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted."
12 Il disait aussi à son hôte: «Quand tu donnes à déjeuner ou à dîner, ne convoque ni tes amis, ni tes frères, ni tes parents, ni tes riches voisins, de crainte qu'ils ne t'invitent à leur tour et ne te rendent ce qu'ils auront reçu de toi.
Also to his host who had invited him, he continued, saying. "When you are making a dinner-party or a supper, do not invite your friends, or your brothers, or your relatives, or your rich neighbors, lest it chance that they invite you in return, and a recompense be made by you.
13 Tout au contraire, quand tu fais un festin, appelles-y des pauvres, des infirmes, des estropiés, des aveugles.
"But when you make a reception, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind.
14 Heureux seras-tu, parce qu'ils n'ont pas de quoi te rendre ce festin; et il te sera rendu à la résurrection des justes.»
"Then you will be blessed, because they have no means to repay you, but you shall be paid in the Resurrection of the Just."
15 A ces mots, un des convives lui dit: «Heureux qui sera du banquet dans le Royaume de Dieu!» —
One of his fellow guest who was listening to him, said to him, "Blessed are those who eat bread in the kingdom of God."
16 «Un homme, lui dit Jésus, donna un grand dîner, et y convia beaucoup de monde.
Jesus answered. "A certain man was making a great feast to which he invited many guests.
17 A l'heure du repas, il envoya son serviteur dire aux invités: «Venez, parce que tout est prêt.»
"At dinnertime he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’
18 Mais tous, comme de concert, commencèrent à s'excuser.
"And they all, without exception, proceeded to excuse themselves. The first told him. ‘I have bought a field, and must needs go and see it. Pray have me excused.’
19 «J'ai acheté un champ, dit le premier, il est de toute nécessité que j'aille le voir. Je t'en prie, tiens-moi pour excusé.» — «J'ai acheté cinq paires de boeufs, dit un autre, et je vais les essayer. Je t'en prie, tiens-moi pour excusé.» —
"The second said. ‘I have bought five yolk of oxen and am on my way to try them. I pray that you will have me excused.’
20 «J'ai pris femme, dit un autre encore, donc je ne puis venir.»
"‘I have taken a wife,’ said the another, ‘and for that reason I am unable to come.’
21 Le serviteur revint et raconta cela à son maître. Se mettant en colère, le maître de maison dit alors à son serviteur: «Parcours à la hâte les places publiques et les rues de la ville, et amène ici les pauvres, les infirmes, les aveugles, les estropiés.»
"So the slave came and presented all these answers to his master. Then the master of the house was indignant, and said to his slave. ‘Go out, quickly, into the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in hither the poor, the maimed, the blind, the lame.’
22 Quand le serviteur lui dit: «Seigneur, on a fait ce que tu as ordonné», et il y a encore de la place,
"And the slave said, ‘My master, your orders have been carried out, but yet there is room.’
23 le maître lui répondit: «Va dans les chemins et le long des haies et contrains les gens d'entrer, afin que ma maison soit pleine.
"Said the master to his slave. ‘Go out into the roads and the hedges, and make them come in, so that my house may be filled.
24 Je vous le déclare, en effet, aucun de ces hommes qui étaient «les invités» ne prendra part à mon festin.»
"‘For I tell you that not one of those invited guests shall taste my supper.’"
25 Il était suivi de foules immenses; il se tourna vers elles et leur dit:
Great crowds were along with him, and he turned to them and said.
26 «Si quelqu'un vient à moi et ne hait pas et son père et sa mère, et sa femme et ses enfants, et ses frères et ses soeurs, plus encore: sa propre vie, il ne peut être mon disciple.»
"If any one comes to me and does not hate father and his mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters, yes, and his own very life also, he cannot be a disciple of mine.
27 «Celui qui ne porte pas sa croix, et ne marche pas à ma suite, ne peut être mon disciple.»
"Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me, cannot be a disciple of mine.
28 «Quel est celui d'entre vous qui, voulant bâtir une tour, ne réfléchisse d'abord, ne calcule la dépense, ne voie s'il a de quoi l'achever?
"Which of you who is desirous of building a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, to see if he has the means to complete it?
29 Il craindrait, après avoir jeté les fondements, de ne pouvoir achever. Tous ceux qui verraient cela se moqueraient de lui.
"Lest it happen that after he has laid the foundations and is unable to complete it, all who see it shall begin to jeer at him saying,
30 «Le voilà, diraient-ils, l'homme qui a commencé à bâtir et quia été dans l'impossibilité d'achever!»
"‘This fellow began to build and could not finish.’
31 «Quel est encore le roi, sur le point de faire la guerre à un autre roi, qui ne réfléchisse d'abord, qui n'examine s'il est capable, avec dix mille hommes, de marcher à la rencontre de celui qui s'avance sur lui avec vingt mille?
"Or what king as he goes forth to join battle with another king in war does not sit down first and deliberate whether he can meet with ten thousand men the one who is advancing against him with twenty thousand?
32 S'il en est incapable, alors que l'ennemi est encore loin, il lui envoie une ambassade avec des propositions de paix.»
"If he cannot, while the other king is yet a great way off, he sends an embassy to ask conditions of peace.
33 «Ainsi donc, quiconque ne renonce pas à tout ce qu'il possède ne peut être mon disciple.»
"Just so any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
34 «Le sel est bon; mais si le sel s'affadit, avec quoi lui rendra-t-on sa saveur?
"Salt is good, but if even the salt have lost its flavor, with what shall it be seasoned?
35 Il n'est plus propre à rien, ni pour la terre, ni pour le fumier. On le jette dehors. Que celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre, entende.»
"It is fit neither for the land nor the dung-hill; men cast it out. He who has ears to hear let him listen to this!"
