Actes 1
1 Dans mon premier récit, Théophile, j'ai raconté depuis le commencement tout ce que Jésus a fait et enseigné
The first account which I drew up, Theophilus, dealt with all that Jesus did and taught from the very first,
2 jusqu'au jour où, après avoir donné, par l'Esprit saint, ses ordres aux apôtres qu'il avait choisis, il fut enlevé au ciel.
down to that day on which he was taken up to heaven, after he had, by the help of the Holy Spirit, given instructions to the apostles whom he had chosen.
3 Déjà, après sa passion, il s'était montré à eux vivant, leur avait donné de nombreuses preuves de sa résurrection, leur était apparu pendant quarante jours, leur avait parlé des choses du Royaume de Dieu.
With abundant proofs, he showed himself to them, still living, after his death; appearing to them from time to time during forty days, and speaking of all that related to the kingdom of God.
4 Un jour qu'ils étaient réunis, il leur ordonna de ne pas quitter Jérusalem, mais d'y attendre ce que le Père avait promis... «Ce dont vous m'avez entendu parler, leur dit-il;
And once, when he had gathered them together, he charged them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the fulfillment of the Father’s promise – “that promise,” he said, “of which you have heard me speak;
5 car Jean baptisait d'eau, mais vous, vous serez baptisés d'Esprit saint dans peu de jours.»
for, while John baptized with water, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit before many days have passed.”
6 Les apôtres, tout en l'accompagnant, lui posaient des questions: «Seigneur, lui demandèrent-ils, est-ce maintenant que tu vas rétablir la royauté en Israël?»
So, when the apostles had met together, they asked Jesus this question – “Master, is this the time when you intend to re-establish the kingdom for Israel?”
7 Il leur répondit: «Vous n'avez pas à savoir les époques ou les moments que le Père a fixés de sa propre autorité;
His answer was, “It is not for you to know times or hours, for the Father has reserved these for his own decision;
8 mais vous recevrez une grande force quand le saint Esprit descendra sur vous, et vous serez mes témoins à Jérusalem, dans toute la Judée, en Samarie et jusqu'au bout du monde.»
but you will receive power, when the Holy Spirit will have descended on you, and will be witnesses for me not only in Jerusalem, but throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
9 Pendant qu'il prononçait ces paroles et pendant qu'ils le regardaient, il fut enlevé et une nuée vint le dérober à leurs yeux.
No sooner had Jesus said this than he was caught up before their eyes, and a cloud received him from their sight.
10 Comme ils considéraient attentivement le ciel pendant qu'il s'en allait, deux hommes en vêtements blancs se présentèrent à eux:
While they were still gazing up into the heavens, as he went, suddenly two men, clothed in white, stood beside them,
11 «Galiléens, leur dirent-ils, pourquoi restez-vous là à regarder au ciel? Ce Jésus qui vient d'être enlevé au ciel du milieu de vous, en reviendra de la même manière que vous l'avez vu y monter.»
and said, “People of Galilee, why are you standing here looking up into the heavens? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into the heavens, will come in the same way in which you have seen him go into the heavens.”
12 Ils retournèrent alors de la montagne appelée Bois d'Oliviers à Jérusalem, qui est tout près, à la distance d'un chemin de sabbat.
Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called Olivet, which is about three quarters of a mile from the city.
13 Rentrés dans la ville, ils montèrent à la chambre haute, où ils se tenaient d'ordinaire. C'étaient: Pierre, Jean, Jacques et André, — Philippe et Thomas, — Barthélemy et Matthieu, — Jacques, fils d'Alphée, Simon le Zélote et Judas, fils de Jacques.
When they reached Jerusalem, they went to the upstairs room, where they were staying. There were there Peter, John, James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.
14 Eux tous, avec persévérance et d'un seul coeur, s'y adonnaient à la prière avec les femmes, avec Marie, mère de Jésus, et avec les frères de celui-ci.
They all united in devoting themselves to prayer, and so did some women, and Mary, the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.
15 Un de ces jours-là, Pierre se leva au milieu des frères (cent vingt personnes environ étaient ensemble réunies) et voici ce qu'il dit:
About this time, at a meeting of the Lord’s followers, when there were about a hundred and twenty present, Peter rose to speak.
16 «Mes frères, il fallait que s'accomplît l'Écriture, la prédiction de l'Esprit saint faite par la bouche de David sur Judas (celui qui s'est chargé de conduire ceux qui ont arrêté Jésus),
“Friends,” he said, “it was necessary that the prediction of scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit made by the lips of David about Judas, who acted as guide to the men who arrested Jesus,
17 parce qu'il était au nombre des nôtres et qu'il avait reçu sa part de notre ministère
for he was one of our number and had his part allotted him in this work of ours.”
18 — (cet homme, après avoir acheté un champ avec le salaire de son crime, s'est jeté, la tête la première; son corps s'est brisé par le milieu; ses entrailles se sont répandues;
(This man had bought a piece of land with the price of his treachery; and, falling heavily, his body had burst open, and all his bowels protruded.
19 ce fait est si bien, connu de tous les habitants de Jérusalem, que dans leur langue ils appellent ce champ Acheldamach, c'est-à-dire champ du sang)
This became known to everyone living in Jerusalem, so that the field came to be called, in their language, ‘Akeldama,’ which means the ‘Field of Blood.’)
20 en effet, il est écrit au livre des Psaumes: «Que sa demeure devienne un désert! Que personne n'y habite!» et: «Qu'un autre obtienne sa charge.»
“For in the book of Psalms,” Peter continued, “it is said – ‘Let his home become desolate, and let no one live in it’; and also – ‘His office let another take.’
21 Donc, il faut qu'un des hommes qui nous ont accompagnés pendant tout le temps, depuis que le Seigneur Jésus a commencé jusqu'à ce qu'il ait cessé d'être avec nous,
Therefore, from among the men who have been with us all the time that Jesus, our Master, went in and out among us –
22 en prenant depuis le baptême de Jean jusqu'au jour où il nous a été enlevé, devienne avec nous témoin de sa résurrection.»
from his baptism by John down to that day on which he was taken from us – someone must be found to join us as a witness of his resurrection.”
23 Ils en proposèrent deux: Joseph dit Bar-Sabbas, surnommé Justus, et Matthias;
So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas, whose other name was Justus, and Matthias;
24 puis ils firent cette prière: «Toi, Seigneur, qui connais tous les coeurs, montre-nous lequel de ces deux frères tu as choisi
and they offered this prayer – “Lord, who reads all hearts, show which of these two men you have chosen
25 pour qu'il occupe la place de ministre et d'apôtre que Judas a quittée pour aller à la place qui est la sienne.»
to take the place in this apostolic work, which Judas has abandoned, to go to his proper place.”
26 Ensuite on tira au sort. Le sort tomba sur Matthias, qui fut alors associé aux onze apôtres.
Then they drew lots between them; and, the lot having fallen to Matthias, he was added to the number of the eleven apostles.
