1 Quant à toi, proclame ce qui est conforme à l'enseignement salutaire:
You, however, must teach what is consistent with healthy beliefs.
2 Que les vieillards doivent être sobres, dignes, sages, attachés à une foi saine, à la charité, à la patience:
Older men shouldn't drink; they should be respectable and sensible, with a healthy trust in God, loving and patient.
3 Que les femmes âgées doivent de même avoir la tenue qui convient à des saints, n'être ni médisantes, ni asservies par les excès du vin; qu'elles doivent enseigner ce qui est bien,
Similarly older women ought to behave in a way that shows they live their lives for God. They shouldn't destroy people's reputations by what they say, and they shouldn't be addicted to wine.
4 afin d'apprendre aux jeunes femmes à aimer leurs maris et leurs enfants,
They should be teachers of what's good, teaching the young wives to love their husbands and their children.
5 à être sages, chastes, bonnes ménagères, soumises à leurs propres maris, afin que la parole de Dieu ne soit point calomniée.
They are to be sensible and pure, working in their homes, doing good and listening to what their husbands tell them. In this way the word of God will not be spoken about badly.
6 Exhorte de même les jeunes gens à être sages,
Likewise tell the young men to be sensible.
7 te montrant toi-même en toutes choses comme un modèle de bonnes œuvres, et faisant preuve dans l'enseignement de pureté, de dignité,
You should set an example of doing good in all areas of life: show integrity and seriousness in what you teach,
8 d'une doctrine saine et irrépréhensible, afin que l'adversaire ait la confusion de ne pouvoir dire aucun mal de vous.
sharing healthy beliefs that can't be criticized. In this way those who are opposed will be ashamed of themselves and won't have anything bad to say about us.
9 Que les esclaves soient soumis à leurs propres maîtres, qu'ils leurs plaisent en toutes choses, qu'ils ne soient point récalcitrants,
Tell servants to always obey their masters. They should try to please them and not talk back to them.
10 qu'ils ne détournent rien, mais qu'ils se montrent à tous égards honnêtes et fidèles, afin de faire honneur, sous tous les rapports, à l'enseignement de Dieu notre sauveur.
They shouldn't steal things for themselves, but show they are completely trustworthy so that they may rightly represent the truth about God our Savior in every way.
11 Elle a été en effet manifestée, la grâce de Dieu, source du salut pour tous les hommes,
For God's grace has been revealed, bringing salvation to everyone.
12 et elle nous apprend, après que nous avons renoncé à l'impiété et aux convoitises mondaines, à vivre dans le présent siècle sagement, justement et pieusement, (aiōn g165)
It teaches us to reject a godless way of life with the desires of this world. Instead we should live thoughtful, self-controlled lives that are right before God in the present world (aiōn g165)
13 en attendant la réalisation de notre bienheureuse espérance et l'apparition de la gloire de notre grand Dieu et sauveur Jésus-Christ,
as we look for the wonderful hope of the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.
14 qui s'est donné lui-même pour nous, afin de nous racheter de toute iniquité, et de s'acquérir, en le purifiant, un peuple qui lui appartînt, zélé pour les bonnes œuvres.
He gave himself for us, so that he could set us free from all our wickedness, and to make us clean for him—a people who belong to him, keen to do good.
15 Enseigne ces choses, exhorte, et reprends avec tout pouvoir; que personne ne te dédaigne.
This is what you should be teaching. You have the authority to encourage and to correct as necessary. Don't let anyone look down on you.
