Psaumes 78
1 Hymne d'Asaph. Mon peuple, écoute mes leçons! Prêtez l'oreille aux paroles de ma bouche!
Maschil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, [to] my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 Je vais ouvrir la bouche par des chants, et du passé faire jaillir des sentences.
I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:
3 Ce que nous avons entendu et appris, et que nos pères nous ont raconté,
Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
4 nous ne le cèlerons point à leurs enfants, redisant à la race future les louanges de l'Éternel, et sa puissance, et les miracles qu'il fit.
We will not hide [them] from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.
5 Il érigea un témoignage en Jacob, et Il déposa une loi en Israël, qu'il ordonna à nos pères d'enseigner à leurs enfants,
For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:
6 pour qu'elle fût connue de l'âge qui suivrait, des enfants qui naîtraient, grandiraient pour la redire à leurs enfants;
That the generation to come might know [them, even] the children [which] should be born; [who] should arise and declare [them] to their children:
7 afin qu'ils missent en Dieu leur confiance, et n'oubliassent point les œuvres de Dieu, et qu'ils gardassent ses commandements,
That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:
8 et ne fussent pas, comme leurs pères, une race réfractaire et rebelle, une race qui n'avait pas un cœur constant, et dont l'âme ne Lui était pas fidèle.
And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation [that] set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.
9 Les enfants d'Ephraïm furent des tireurs armés de l'arc, qui tournent le dos au jour du combat.
The children of Ephraim, [being] armed, [and] carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.
10 Ils ne gardèrent point l'alliance de Dieu, et refusèrent de suivre ses lois;
They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;
11 et ils oublièrent ses hauts faits et ses miracles, dont Il les rendit témoins.
And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.
12 Sous les yeux de leurs pères, Il fit des miracles, dans le pays d'Egypte, aux campagnes de Zoan.
Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, [in] the field of Zoan.
13 Il entrouvrit la mer et les fit passer, et Il fit tenir les eaux comme une digue;
He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.
14 et Il les guidait le jour par la nuée, et toute la nuit, à la clarté de la flamme;
In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.
15 Il fendit les rochers au désert, et les abreuva comme de flots abondants,
He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave [them] drink as [out of] the great depths.
16 et Il fit sortir des ruisseaux du rocher, et couler les eaux comme des torrents.
He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.
17 Mais ils continuèrent encore à pécher contre Lui, à être rebelles au Très-haut dans le désert.
And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.
18 Et ils tentèrent Dieu dans leur cœur, demandant d'être nourris selon leur fantaisie;
And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.
19 et ils parlèrent contre Dieu, ils dirent: « Dieu pourra-t-Il dresser une table au désert?
Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?
20 Voici, Il frappa le rocher, et l'eau a ruisselé, et les fleuves ont coulé; pourra-t-Il aussi donner du pain et fournir de la viande à son peuple? »
Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?
21 Et à l'ouïe de ces propos, l'Éternel s'irrita, et un feu s'alluma contre Jacob, et la colère s'éleva contre Israël,
Therefore the LORD heard [this], and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;
22 parce qu'ils n'avaient pas foi en Dieu, et ne comptaient pas sur son secours.
Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:
23 Cependant Il commanda aux nuées d'en haut, et Il ouvrit les portes des Cieux;
Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,
24 et Il fit pleuvoir sur eux la manne pour les nourrir, et Il leur donna le froment céleste;
And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.
25 ils mangèrent chacun le pain des princes; Il leur envoya de quoi se nourrir à rassasiement.
Man did eat angels’ food: he sent them meat to the full.
26 Il fit lever dans le ciel le vent d'Orient, et amena par sa puissance le vent du Midi,
He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.
27 et Il fit pleuvoir sur eux la chair comme de la poussière et des oiseaux ailés, comme le sable des mers,
He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:
28 et Il les fit tomber au milieu de leur camp, tout autour de leurs habitations.
And he let [it] fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.
29 Alors ils mangèrent et se rassasièrent pleinement, Il avait ainsi satisfait leur désir.
So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;
30 Ils ne s'étaient pas encore dépris de leur désir, ils avaient encore leur aliment dans leur bouche,
They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat [was] yet in their mouths,
31 que la colère de Dieu s'éleva contre eux, et qu'il fit un massacre parmi leurs hommes forts, et qu'il coucha par terre la jeunesse d'Israël.
The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen [men] of Israel.
32 Néanmoins ils péchèrent encore, et ne crurent point à ses miracles.
For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.
33 Et d'un souffle Il consuma leurs jours, et leurs années par une ruine soudaine.
Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.
34 Lorsqu'il les tuait, ils s'enquéraient de Lui, et revenaient, et cherchaient Dieu,
When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.
35 et se rappelaient que Dieu était leur rocher, et Dieu, le Très-haut, leur rédempteur;
And they remembered that God [was] their rock, and the high God their redeemer.
36 mais leurs bouches le trompaient, et leurs langues lui mentaient,
Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.
37 et leur cœur ne Lui fut pas fermement uni, et ils ne furent pas fidèles à son alliance.
For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.
38 Toutefois, dans sa clémence, Il pardonna le crime et ne les détruisit pas; et souvent Il contint son courroux, et ne donna pas cours à toute sa colère.
But he, [being] full of compassion, forgave [their] iniquity, and destroyed [them] not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.
39 Il se souvint donc qu'ils étaient des mortels, un souffle qui s'en va, et ne revient plus.
For he remembered that they [were but] flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.
40 Que de fois ils Lui furent rebelles au désert, et ils L'irritèrent dans la solitude!
How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, [and] grieve him in the desert!
41 Et de nouveau ils tentèrent le Seigneur, et provoquèrent le Saint d'Israël.
Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.
42 Ils ne pensaient plus à ce qu'avait fait son bras, le jour où Il les délivra de l'ennemi,
They remembered not his hand, [nor] the day when he delivered them from the enemy.
43 lorsque en Egypte Il opéra des prodiges, et des miracles dans les campagnes de Zoan.
How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan:
44 Il changea ses fleuves en sang, et de leurs eaux ils ne purent plus boire.
And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.
45 Parmi eux Il envoya des moucherons qui les dévorèrent, et des grenouilles qui furent leur fléau;
He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.
46 et Il livra leur récolte à l'insecte vorace, et le fruit de leur labeur à la sauterelle.
He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.
47 Il fit périr leurs vignes par la grêle, et leurs sycomores par les fourmis,
He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.
48 et Il livra leur bétail à la grêle, et leurs troupeaux à la foudre.
He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.
49 Il lança contre eux le feu de sa colère, le courroux, la fureur et l'angoisse, une cohorte d'anges des malheurs.
He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels [among them].
50 Il donna carrière à son courroux, ne refusa point leur âme à la mort, mais livra leur vie en proie à la peste,
He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;
51 et frappa tous les premiers-nés en Egypte, et les prémices de la vigueur dans les tentes de Cham.
And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of [their] strength in the tabernacles of Ham:
52 Il fit ainsi partir son peuple comme des brebis, et le guida comme un troupeau dans le désert,
But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
53 et le mena sûrement, et ils furent sans crainte, et la mer recouvrit leurs adversaires.
And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
54 Et Il les fit arriver dans ses limites saintes, à cette montagne que sa droite conquit;
And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, [even to] this mountain, [which] his right hand had purchased.
55 et devant eux Il chassa les nations, et les leur fit échoir en portion d'héritage, et Il établit dans leurs tentes les tribus d'Israël.
He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.
56 Mais, rebelles ils tentèrent Dieu, le Très-haut, et ne gardèrent point ses commandements;
Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:
57 ils furent déserteurs et perfides, comme leurs pères; ils tournèrent comme un arc trompeur;
But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.
58 ils excitèrent sa colère par leurs hauts-lieux, et sa jalousie par leurs idoles.
For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.
59 Dieu l'entendit, et fut irrité, et conçut pour Israël une grande aversion.
When God heard [this], he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:
60 Alors Il quitta la demeure de Silo, la tente qu'il avait dressée parmi les hommes,
So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent [which] he placed among men;
61 et Il laissa sa gloire s'en aller captive, et sa majesté tomber aux mains de l'ennemi,
And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy’s hand.
62 et Il livra son peuple à l'épée, et contre son héritage Il fut irrité;
He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.
63 le feu dévora ses jeunes hommes, et ses vierges ne furent plus chantées;
The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.
64 ses prêtres succombèrent à l'épée, et ses veuves ne pleurèrent pas.
Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.
65 Alors, comme celui qui a dormi, le Seigneur s'éveilla, tel que le héros dont le vin avait triomphé;
Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, [and] like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.
66 et Il repoussa ses ennemis, et les chargea d'une honte éternelle.
And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.
67 Cependant Il répudia la tente de Joseph, et n'élut point la tribu d'Ephraïm;
Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
68 et Il élut la tribu de Juda, la montagne de Sion qu'il aimait.
But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
69 Et Il affermit son sanctuaire à l'égal des Cieux, à l'égal de la terre, dont Il posa les fondements éternels;
And he built his sanctuary like high [palaces], like the earth which he hath established for ever.
70 et Il élut David, son serviteur, et le tira des parcs des troupeaux;
He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:
71 Il lui fit quitter les brebis qui allaitent, pour être le pasteur de Jacob, son peuple, et d'Israël, son héritage.
From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.
72 Et il en fut le pasteur avec un cœur pur, et d'une main prudente il le conduisit.
So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.
