Proverbes 26
1 Comme la neige en été, et la pluie à la moisson, ainsi l'honneur ne va pas à l'insensé.
As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.
2 Comme le passereau va voltigeant, et l'hirondelle volant ainsi la malédiction non méritée n'atteint pas.
As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.
3 Au cheval le fouet, à l'âne le mors, et au dos de l'insensé le bâton.
A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool’s back.
4 Ne réponds pas à l'insensé selon sa folie, de peur de lui ressembler toi-même.
Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
5 Réponds à l'insensé selon sa folie. afin qu'il ne s'imagine pas être sage.
Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.
6 Il se coupe les pieds, s'abreuve de peines celui qui charge un fou d'une mission.
He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, [and] drinketh damage.
7 Les jambes d'un perclus sont pendantes; telle est une sentence dans la bouche des fous.
The legs of the lame are not equal: so [is] a parable in the mouth of fools.
8 Lancer une pierre avec la fronde, c'est accorder des honneurs à un insensé.
As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so [is] he that giveth honour to a fool.
9 Une épine que tient levée un homme ivre, c'est une sentence dans la bouche des fous.
[As] a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so [is] a parable in the mouth of fools.
10 Tel un archer qui blesse chacun, tel est celui qui soudoie des fous, et soudoie tout venant.
The great [God] that formed all [things] both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.
11 Comme le chien retourne à ce qu'il a vomi, ainsi l'insensé réitère sa folie.
As a dog returneth to his vomit, [so] a fool returneth to his folly.
12 Vois cet homme qui s'imagine être sage! Il y a plus à espérer d'un insensé que de lui.
Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? [there is] more hope of a fool than of him.
13 Le lâche dit: « J'entends sur le chemin le rugissant, il y a un lion dans la rue! »
The slothful [man] saith, [There is] a lion in the way; a lion [is] in the streets.
14 La porte tourne sur ses gonds, et le lâche dans son lit.
[As] the door turneth upon his hinges, so [doth] the slothful upon his bed.
15 Le lâche plonge sa main dans le plat, il a peine à la ramener à sa bouche.
The slothful hideth his hand in [his] bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth.
16 Le lâche se trouve plus sage que sept hommes qui répondent avec jugement.
The sluggard [is] wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.
17 Il prend un chien par les oreilles, celui qui en passant s'échauffe pour une querelle qui n'est pas la sienne.
He that passeth by, [and] meddleth with strife [belonging] not to him, [is like] one that taketh a dog by the ears.
18 Tel un furieux qui décoche des traits, et des dards mortels,
As a mad [man] who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death,
19 tel est l'homme qui trompe son prochain, puis dit: « N'ai-je pas badiné? »
So [is] the man [that] deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?
20 Faute de bois le feu s'éteint; ôtez le médisant, la querelle cesse.
Where no wood is, [there] the fire goeth out: so where [there is] no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.
21 Le charbon donne de la braise, et le bois des flammes, et l'homme querelleur allume la dispute.
[As] coals [are] to burning coals, and wood to fire; so [is] a contentious man to kindle strife.
22 Les propos du rapporteur sont comme des friandises; ils s'insinuent jusqu'au fond des entrailles.
The words of a talebearer [are] as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
23 De l'argent brut appliqué sur un têt, c'est le feu sur les lèvres, et la malice dans le cœur.
Burning lips and a wicked heart [are like] a potsherd covered with silver dross.
24 Dans ses discours l'ennemi dissimule, mais dans son âme il s'apprête à tromper.
He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;
25 Prend-il un ton gracieux, ne te fie pas à lui, car sept abominations sont dans son cœur.
When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for [there are] seven abominations in his heart.
26 La haine se cache sous un faux semblant, mais sa malice se découvre dans l'assemblée.
[Whose] hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the [whole] congregation.
27 Qui creuse une fosse, y tombe, et la pierre revient sur celui qui la roule.
Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.
28 La langue fausse hait ceux qu'elle va perdre, et la bouche flatteuse prépare la ruine.
A lying tongue hateth [those that are] afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.
